USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted August 19, 2017 Posted August 19, 2017 I'm also intrigued with Turley's potential as a reliever.
drjim Provisional Member Posted August 19, 2017 Posted August 19, 2017 I'm also intrigued with Turley's potential as a reliever.Agreed. And if he could emerge as a 2nd lefty, would really help down the stretch and would be one less hole to fill next offseason. 27/28 year olds emerging as effective relievers definitely happens.
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted August 19, 2017 Posted August 19, 2017 It looks like we will see Melville on Monday along with Gee.That leaves Gibson still with the Twins and in line for Tuesday. I'm hoping he will be sent down and replaced by Slegers but nothing on that front as of yet.Adding Melville will require a 40 man move. Putting Santiago on 60 day DL would seem most likely.

I'm hoping he will be sent down and replaced by Slegers but nothing on that front as of yet.Molitor already said yesterday that Gibson will be starting Tuesday. They will need another starter for next Saturday, and assuming they don't want Gee or Melville, that could go to Slegers.
jorgenswest Verified Member Posted August 19, 2017 Posted August 19, 2017 Where would you set the over/under for combined innings from Melville and Gee? 9? Gimenez better be ready to throw. They will probably need to make some moves following game 2 to prepare for the inevitable short Gibson start on Tuesday.
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted August 19, 2017 Posted August 19, 2017 That makes sense. Its the Strib reporting that Melville will be up to start, presumably as the 26th man although Len3 wasn't sure.If it were up to me, I would option Gibson to make room for Melville and perhaps add a reliever (Boshers I suppose) as the 26th man as he would be eligible in either game. After Monday, Boshers returns to AAA and Melville is optioned to make room for Slegers to start Tuesday. Of course that would mean Gee has to start next Saturday as well. Monday the 27th is an off day that can be used to get the rotation back on track. By the time Sept 1 comes around, rosters expand and the 10 day waiting periods for the guys sent down after the doubleheader will be over. But that's me.

After Recker was outrighted, we had 38 spots. After Perkins and Slegers were added to the 40 man roster, it is full. Santiago to 60 day DL would make sense.

The Wise One Verified Member Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 As long as the Twins are still in realistic playoff contention, Falvine should be giving zero consideration to the playoff aspirations of their minor league affiliates. The minor leagues exist to develop players and supply substitutes for the majors, period. Which team wins and loses is of little importance. In the grand scheme of things who wins and loses a game is of little importance to the universe. Minor league teams exist to make money for their owners. Mlb teams supply the players for free, the club supplies the rest. If the club continually loses and no one comes to the games, they will try to find another major league team for affiliation. After the 2018 season there may well be affiliate changes.https://ballparkdigest.com/200905261902/minor-league-baseball/news/affiliate-dance-2012
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 At the moment, the rotation contains Santana, Berrios and Colon and for the time being, Gibson. With Mejia out, there is a revolving door, temporarily at least, for the 5th spot, plus the double header on Monday. So things are in a bit of a flux right now, allowing Gibson to hold his spot for the time being. And it makes roster sense for the immediate. While I think Gibson may be on the way out, he's still an experienced pitcher with a bit of a known quantity to him. Even with 90 pitches to finish his past two starts through only 4 IP, he kept the team in those games at least. Keeping him, for now, instead of 2 new arms would seem to make some sense. And really, not only can the team still shuffle after Monday, September will be here in a couple of weeks and it would be that much easier to remove Gibson from the rotation, go to a 6 man rotation if needed/wanted, put Gibson in the pen, or even sit him if wanted.
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 Agreed. And if he could emerge as a 2nd lefty, would really help down the stretch and would be one less hole to fill next offseason. 27/28 year olds emerging as effective relievers definitely happens.Absolutely. There are guys who come up as RP earlier in their career as they are already groomed for the job, or in some cases, are groomed via on the job training as a rotation is already full and they have a good arm that can help. And while I'm not going to do tons of research and name names, we've all seen a lot of quality bullpen guys that had very nice careers after "failing" as a SP, or perhaps lose time and development due to injury and re-invented themselves as a RP. This includes a lot of really, really good relievers for the Twins in the past. Joe Nathan was an injured and failed infielder converted to pitching, was acquired as a budding setup man and became a top closer. Aguilera was acquired as a solid SP, but not a front man, and became a top closer. Guadardo, Hawkins, Mahomex, Trombley are just a few other names internally who found success in the pen in mid to slightly later 20's. Can Turley be one of those guys? Who knows?! But he sure doesn't look like a ML SP. But with some life on his FB and a nice breaking pitch, he sure is worth looking at at 27.

yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 I suspect Pressly is going to pitch the 9th and then be optioned out. Problematically, the only eligible pitcher on the 40 man roster is Randy Rosario, who has not been sharp lately. Could be that Michael Tonkin gets a second chance. There are currently 39 on the 40 man. But the Twins plan to bring up Melville to start tomorrow. Santiago to the 60 day still seems the most probable way to free up a spot.
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 How about sending Perkins down to create a 25 man spot? Is that possible or would he have to be DFA'd? He needs time in the minors. He probably has at least one option remaining. However, given his service time, he would have to agree to it. If he were willing to do that, chances are it would have been done right away.

caninatl04 Verified Member Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 Per MLB.com, the Twins have 42 players on their 40 man roster, minus 3 who are on 60 day DL netting 39, including Slegers. But this is all secondary to the point. The Twins are on a role, in playoff position and about to play the worst team in the league. But, of course, they have, including a 44 year old cast off, a grand total of three starting pitchers. Oh, plus a Gibson, what ever that is. Should they lose a bunch of 11-9 games this week, I'll be angry.

He would have to clear waivers and be outrighted off the 40-man roster to be sent to the minor leagues right now. Or released and re-signed to a minor league deal, which could be the offsets on version...

yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 I still believe Slegers should start tomorrow and Gibson should be demoted to bullpen. Send Melville out. Option him. DFA him. Whatever.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 Are we worried someone would actually claim him off waivers? No, just that it is a little more complicated than simply asking him to accept an optional assignment. Sometimes vets accept a short term optional assignment -- Anibal Sanchez for Detroit this year is an example -- but I suspect it is a bit harder to sell if you have to outright/release the player instead. Might be an ego thing, although I wonder how MLBPA benefits are affected too...

Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 If he clears waivers, they no longer need his permission. His choices are play at AAA, or retire, I believe. Not quite. He can refuse any minor league assignment, even if he clears waivers, and basically force the team to either keep him on the roster or release him. At which point he gets his full salary but is a free agent. He could also accept an outright assignment to the minors, but that takes him off the 40-man which is why I was speculating it might be a bit harder to convince him to accept, as compared to a simple minor league optional assignment.

I thought a player could be outrighted without permission once, but now I see there are constraints at 3 and 5 years of service time.
drjim Provisional Member Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 How are people feeling? Slegers starting tonight so not an option for next Saturday. And Garver not cracking the lineup in LF ahead of Adrianza when Kepler is sick.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 I'm pretty sure it will be a Gee Saturday and if Gibson is ineffective, Slegers will replace Gibson on Sunday. Pretty sure the Twins don't want to see Garver in the outfield.
