3 empty 40 man roster spots now?

With the Twins trading Brandon Kintzler to Washington and only receiving Tyler Watson. Watson is only 20 years old and doesn't need to be placed on the 40 man roster.

Anthony Recker is still listed on the 40 man, even though they outrighted him off the 40 man when they got him in the Garcia trade.

So do the Twins just leave it be or will they be promoting some players to the majors that aren't on the 40 man roster?

Enns was on the 40 man when he came over, so I think technically he replaces Recker.

1.  They will need to bring Byron Buxton off the DL.

2.  They will need a starting pitcher.  My choice would be Dillon Gee, at Rochester 3-1, 2.00 era.3

3. They will need a new closer. My choice would be Hildenberger, who was a closer in the minor leagues.

That, with Ennis, will take care of the roster situation.

Was Recker moved off the 40-man? I didn't think he was. I thought he was just assigned to the minors? So definitely room to move up a couple players.

Those 3 guys (Buxton, Gee and Hildy) are all already on the 40 man roster.

The Twins are in no hurry to add men to the 40-man, at this point. They will partly see who becomes available in August.

They actually have names to remove.

But, yes, who is the starter coming to replace Garcia?

Will they keep the extra bench bat when Buxton returns? Or send Granite out, since Grossman is still here.

You could actually see the Twins remove an infielder, a backup catcher, a backup outfielder, a starting pitcher and at least two relievers, not to mention a few names already on the 40-man stuck in Rochester (Turley, Vargas) come the waiver wire and replace those names with [people currently on the 40-man for sure.

Glen Perkins!

There is no reason to add guys just to fill it.

If you do that, you unnecessarily risk losing someone if you need an opening later.

I get we have guys that we could lose and not matter, but still, until you need to add a guy there is just no reason to risk it.

Here's the running list from the Rule 5 eligible thread:

1. Gonsalves

2. Rodriguez
3. Thorpe
4. Stewart
5. Slegers
6. Diaz
7. Arraez
8. Palacios
9. Molina
10. Eades
11. Burdi
12. Clay
13. Reed
14. Curtiss
15. Murphy
16. English

Plus Mota and Littell, recent acquisitions.

I guess give Slegers the early edge since he's been an organization warrior? They could probably tell within a month whether he's worth protecting or DFA'ing. Wouldn't be opposed to adding Reed and Curtiss either for the rest of the season.

Wow, that is a ton of players to think about needing to protect. They could have up around ten or so spots open up in the offseason though. Those International signings are tough because they require a spot before most even prove/earn a spot since they sign so young. It should be fun to watch how they work around this and whom they end up leaving exposed.

Adding a player to the 40 man roster now and leaving him in the minors uses an option. Adding a player now and calling him up to stay on the 25 man roster does not. However if he is sent back down before the end of the season you would again use an option.

At this point of the season, you may as well save them for the September call ups. In the meantime if a need arises they are available to use on journeymen who can fill a short term need and who won't be missed if they are DFA'd or optioned before the end of the season.

I never knew that DuluthFan. SO it makes sense to leave the players off. Time for the FO to comb the DFA list. Maybe the Twins can put in claims for players that have another year at least on their contracts and see if they can work out a deal to help the clucb in 2018.
