Timeline for Hughes and Santiago?

I was just reading that the Twins are going to use Hughes out of the pen and he is working on pitching in back-to-back games before that happens. No idea if anyone has been named as the 5th starter. Probably Santiago if he is ready.

I think Santiago was scheduled to throw 60 pitches in his first game. That would put him on a pace for 80 or so in game 2, probably. No idea if that's MLB in AAA. Even a 4 IP start is good for most Twins #5 pitchers this year, I guess.

I don't think Santiago can finish four innings in 60 pitches.

Do you think he will be backed up by Gee? That might stretch out Gee to be ready for the double header Saturday. On the other hand, they could send Gee down when Santiago returns also.

Gee would have to consent to being optioned. Maybe he would if you told him he'd be back for the doubleheader Saturday (although I'd also plan to DFA him after the doubleheader, which he probably wouldn't be too keen about).

Santiago is back with the team already and will start the day after tomorrow. Hughes is slated to pitch for a second day in a row tomorrow. I would guess he's not far away.

Hildenberger will likely be one of the moves, with the other most likely....Busenitz

Is anyone else not that excited to see Hughes? I know with his contract they will pitch him is some form until his arm falls off, but he seems done to me.  Hope i'm wrong.

I agree, but his first start was 60. He should be at least 80 on round 2.

Gee is a curious question. He had an opt-out date, so being sent down might not sit well with him.

This team needs a long reliever with Haley out. Whether that's Hughes or Gee...I guess I don't care. Just someone who isn't a miscast AAA pitcher who is asked to go multiple innings because he's the last man standing.

With the Yankees, when Hughes got hurt, they'd rehab him and put him in the bullpen.  And Hughes was successful there. Then they put him back in the rotation, where he got hurt again.

I don't think Hughes' arm is built for the stress of a starter. The Twins can get value using him in long relief [which I think the Twins really need] by saving the arms of other relief pitchers.

Now, the use of pitchers have changed in the MLB:  starters pitch a lot shorter game and bullpen by committee takes over.  So it still bears the question:  would/could Hughes be successful as a 5 inning starter?  Not sure I'd take the risk.

Give him a shot as a reliever. If his velocity isn't enough to be successful, let him go and eat the contract. If he isn't successful as a reliever, he isn't going to be successful as a starter.

One of these days Matt Belisle and/or Craig Breslow are not going to survive a roster move.  I think that day could next week for one of them, maybe even this week.  In addition to Santiago and Hughes, I suspect Pressly will be back this week.  He was optioned after the game on the 16th, so today is day 10.  He also could be back tomorrow.

Busenitz and Hildenberger likely make way for Santiago and Pressly tomorrow.  One of them comes back Saturday as the 26th man.  Gee figures to start one game on Saturday and then most likely receive his walking papers as well.  So, I would guess Hughes could be back Sunday to replace Gee.  If he's back before that, it could be Belisle.  I would guess at some point the Twins will try Turley in the pen, even if they don't have him relieve "full time" in AAA.  It's kinda up to the Twins what they want to do with Turley.  They still have Slegers, Hurlbut, Pino, Heston and Melville in the AAA rotation.  Gonsalves figures to be bumped up in a few weeks if he continues to do well.

when Hughes was activated, Breslow was put on the DL

Maybe Pressly will be the 26th man Saturday with Santiago starting a game on short rest. Then Belisle released after the double header with Gee starting Sunday. Then Gee could be sent down/out with Pressly back up. If I read the rules correctly, being called up as the 26th man and then being sent down does not reset the 10 day clock.

Nevermind, that wouldn't work. Gee can't come up this weekend unless it is as the 26th man. I do think I am ready to see Pressly get a longer shot with Belisle out though.
