Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 And if you've never heard of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, I recommend checking them out. They were a fun party staple of my college years and were one of the first genre mash bands. My favorite is their strangely compelling version of Mandy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWKMZk_mNKo And this, because Carly Simon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkaBfp1tbck
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 I think the Hurt cover is probably #1. Alice in Chains and Gretchen Wilson covering Barracuda a few years back was fun to watch. Not unique but I liked it better than the original.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 And two songs that were covered so well that most people don't even know they're covers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htobTBlCvUU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF68OyTlP4EIt's been twenty years since i seen that Bjork video. She is a tremendous song writer and forward thinker.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 It's been twenty years since i seen that Bjork video. She is a tremendous song writer and forward thinker. The video was directed by Spike Jonez, which is why it's so good. And the Fiona Apple Across the Universe was directed by PT Anderson, which also explains why it's so good.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 And while I'll never forgive the Dixie Chicks for that abomination of a Landslide cover, their big hit was also a cover and they killed it more than a little bit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw7gNf_9njs

drjim Provisional Member Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 Because no one else has posted them, I'll go ahead and post what are widely regarded to be two of the greatest covers of all time. It's really ****ing hard to upstage Bowie but Cobain managed to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fregObNcHC8 And of course, Hurt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1Pwfnh5pcThese aren't my personal favorites but they're amazing.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 My favourite cover song of all time, from my favourite cover album of all time. Her version of Helpless from this same album is a close second. OK. One more thing from Canada I like.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Let's be honest, this is the greatest cover ever... Not sure why it did that link..... https://g.co/kgs/8INzue
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2017 Posted May 27, 2017 I'm not sure this is technically a 'cover,' but what the heck.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted May 27, 2017 Posted May 27, 2017 Give this one a listen. Most appropriate that it's the cello ... the 'most human' and the most 'God-like' of all the instruments ... playing that one.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted May 27, 2017 Posted May 27, 2017 I'm a fan of covers of some of my favorite songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSZxmZmBfnU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1bFr2SWP1I https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxjE6V8OMfs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBsAmx_bl_o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5njG95T2wy8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc2rTt74Qys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-hmypa3wuA

twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 I have a hard time deciding which of these I like better but Bonnie Raitt's effortless singing usually wins out. Tedeschi and Trucks together though, something else.
