drjim Provisional Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Digging up my Pearl Jam/Neil Young version of "Rocking in the Free World" got me thinking of great covers. Here's my current favorite. My favorite Beatles song covered by a band I have a personal connection with, and an awesome video too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDbWJZ-yjF4
drjim Provisional Member Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 And I always go back to this one by Pearl Jam, right before the 2004 election, less than 2 years into the Iraq War.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 I'm sure there are a few here who already knew I'd post this one ... bluegrass meets hard rock ... THIS is what covers should be ... take a song and put it into your own style, even into a different genre:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4Ao-iNPPUc And not only that ... these guys are musicians of the first-rate, unlike Pearl Jam.

I'm not a huge Pearl Jam fan by any means but Mike Mcready is a pretty good guitar player.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Hard to beat... The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Pardon My Dinger Verified Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 "The Man in Me" performed by David Bazan is my all time favorite.

Wasn't this the band you wanted me to see in Austin while they were touring?
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Disturbed - Sound of Silence Is fantastic.

twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 My favourite cover song of all time, from my favourite cover album of all time. Her version of Helpless from this same album is a close second.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 We did a covers list on Facebook. Some of you participated. I still think it is this one....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jadvt7CbH1o
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 It's hard to pick only one but I'm going with this one today. When she slips into a heroin-like slurring of words, it so perfectly captures the essence of this song that I can't stand it, it's just so good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXE1C--WezU

I thought it was great.

ashbury Verified Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 I recommend not covering Beattle's songsThis is an effort I like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyaYLYrFv5g
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Here's another, same band ... for TN because, well, hockey ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZS12RiBQ3o
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 They don't just cover AC/DC ...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JFb_aOn6rc
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 And a GunsNRoses cover ...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvrogxMHmlg I like all of these songs better by this group. A Finnish bluegrass band ... whoda thunk it
ashbury Verified Member Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 One more song, this time with not 1 but 3 covers for your money. As before, I may have posted any or all of these before. Often I like a cover not just for a change of genre but because it subverts the original meaning in some way big or small. (The Cake one above turns a song of determined triumph into a cold slow-burning rage, while the Beatles one twists exuberant yet understated lust into unrequited love.) The following goes somewhat the opposite direction, turning Mary Hopkin's melancholy contemplation of mortality into a goofy celebration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROCQoqjCU6U Next, I just think this video itself is awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh_h-KdbBrE Finally, I never thought much one way or the other about Dolly Parton, but she finds something new and IMO just-right with this oldie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_sjHnzPyT4
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Because no one else has posted them, I'll go ahead and post what are widely regarded to be two of the greatest covers of all time. It's really ****ing hard to upstage Bowie but Cobain managed to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fregObNcHC8 And of course, Hurt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1Pwfnh5pc
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 And two songs that were covered so well that most people don't even know they're covers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htobTBlCvUU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF68OyTlP4E
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 And they even venture into the punk realm with this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Uvk4TgQWzI
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 I never knew this existed and it makes me so ****ing happy to hear it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXh94o7tAxQ
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 And because I adore Nico, much to the chagrin of my roommates in college. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nGLqXZ-f70
