i use it to put players in categories. MVP t, superstar, all star, good player average players role type players, scrub. And i see no reason to compare pitchers and positiin players.

However did we do all that before WAR?

Evidently Sano's bomb tonight landed inside the pub beyond center field, directly on some poor woman's nose. She needed medical attention.

After today, he is 7th in the MLB in fWAR. 3rd in the AL behind Trout and Judge, just ahead of Lindor. I believe someone (Trout or Lindor) will run away with it at some point, but that is not to takeaway with what Sano has done.

 

If I recall, there were people saying he should be sent down after poor spring training results. That sure does look silly now!

You know what might make me happiest about this?  That I'm willing to bet this eats at Reusse like crazy.  He's seemed determined to be first on the "Sano is going to fail" bandwagon for awhile.

If you go by literal definition of "Most Valuable Player," he should be in the conversation. How many wins would this team have without him? Certainly wouldn't be over .500.

Have you seen the nation-wide love affair with Judge for the Yankees, and his 11 home runs and 11 RBIs (exaggeration), on that slow pitch softball diamond they call an MLB baseball field in New York?

Granted, the guy absolutely crushes the ball, but they're all but anointing him the greatest hitter of all time in the mainstream media already. I haven't heard Sano's name mentioned by anyone outside of Minnesota.

When you're playing for a team like the Twins, you have to do a little extra.

To be fair, Judge has been an absolute treat to watch, and thus far, not only is the sure thing leader for ROY, but is one of the best 5 players thus far in the AL.

Still, give me Sano, this guy has been seeing, hitting, mashing balls like no-one I have ever witnessed in a Twins uniform.

In Jim Rice's MVP year he led the league in GP, PA, AB, triples, HR, RBI, SLG, OPS, and TB.

 

I wouls say he earned that reputation.

Jim Rice was a damn good hitter.

 

It was unfortunate that a few writers got carried away in hyperbole.

The 12 seasons from 75 (22 YO) to  86 (33 YO) he was one of the best hitters in the game with a .876 OPS, 350 HR, 8 all star game appearances, 5 times in the top 5 of MVP voting and of course the MVP. 

That certainly is hall of fame worthy.

He only had 2 less WAR then Puckett as well (who was first ballot HOF)

What's also dumb is that if Rice would have stuck around for another 3.5 years at the end of his career, played mediorce (like a lot of revered players did) but gotten to the magical 3,000 hit number, he would have been a first ballot guy.

That 12 year prime of his is certainly more than enough to earn his spot in the hall of fame.

If he was basing that on WAR, he should then explain to us how Rice's WAR was computed without defensive PBP data.

Yeah, this points out another flaw in WAR, it takes away a bunch (and punishes) Rice because he was a DH?
 

Yeah, Rice wasn't great in the field, but he was an elite hitter, you don't need to be an all around perfect player in every  to make the hall of fame.

If you say Rice doesn't deserve it because of his fielding, then what stops someone from saying that Ozzie Smith shouldn't be in the hall of fame because he hit like Nick Punto? 

Maybe Nolan Ryan doesn't deserve to get in, yeah he was really awesome at punching Robin Ventura, striking out a lot of guys and throwing lots of no hitters, but he also has the most walks, wild pitches and is probably the worst fielding pitcher of all time as well!

Rice is without a doubt a bonafide hall of famer. Stupid "WAR" calculations be damned.

I dunno. I don't mind Rice being in the HOF but I'm a big hall guy. But I don't think WAR was the stat needed to prove he didn't belong.  A lot of his numbers are comparable to other non-HOFers.  He kind of fits in with the 'professional hitter' groups - 9000 or so PA, 2500 or so hits, 350-400 or so HR.  Baines, Evans, Clark even Torii Hunter.  I don't think of those guys as HOFers but they were all good players who played for a long time. But not as good as Fred McGriff.
