Why is Sano a lineup lock?

I certainly don't know what to expect from Sano this year. I have, however, admitted to myself for the very first time that he could turn out to be a colossal bust. His weight and attitude could evolve into the making of something akin to Delmon Young, but, i"Biggied"!

Don't forget he's also collected a big bonus to sign, $6 million if I recall.  That will feed quite a few families for awhile.

I've read the comments, and man, you took a beating, No Crying. I thank you for your input, however maligned by most others it was. I think Chief's post is the best post because he says Sano is our third basemen, but it is also right to be concerned about him. It's not either/or.

I don't think he's taken a "beating" by any means.... Can't speak for others, but I'm so very tired of the "Sea Food" diet jabs, the "he's not a leader because he's on his phone" line that I'm sure Souhan made a note about on his own phone.

I think we just need to lock Sano in a room, feed him properly portioned food 2-3 times a day, and provide a soapbox to give Abraham Lincoln style speeches every day.

Edit: Almost forgot, do not allow him to interact with fans. He needs to be a SERIOUS baseball player. No time for jokes at Hammond Field, no siree.

Sounds reasonable enough!

There are four possible reasons to send someone down. (1) To work on skills, in an environment better suited to work on those skills. (2) Because better players make playing time scarce. (3) to work on fitness, such as recovering from an injury. (4) To punish someone. It's hard to see reasons (1) - (3) applying to Sano. Therefore, the reason would be to punish him. That would be a failure of management. It's management's job to help players mature and find motivation.

P.S. Stop with the Delmon Young comparisons.

#1 doesn't seem impossible.

I'm a little nervous about whispers about a slow bat.

If he slacks and lollygags after the regular season starts and he doesn't post the numbers then we can talk about sending Sano to AAA.  The Twins should put up with his antics only if he is producing.  Sano should be on a shorter leash entering 2017 than he was entering 2016.  He still has superstar potential, it's just that it is seeming less of a lock as time passes.

You know what that would make him?  A lollygagger!

I'm not interested in his weight or the traumatic effect of playing right field for 8 weeks. I'm interested in seeing production and I feel more confident in Buxton s bat right now.

I think we can have legitimate concerns about the K's, low batting average, and defensive shortcomings though.

Those have been there all along.

And for the record, there are reports out this spring that tend to validate past questions about weight.

I personally don't take anyone seriously who takes Souhan or Reusse seriously. They are a total joke and might be the only Minnesotan thing more embarrassing than our professional sports teams. Do you have any links to articles not by those two that discuss concerns with Sano's effort this spring? I'd love to see them if you can.

"interact and joke with Hispanic speaking fans"

Oh no, not the Hispanic speaking fans! It's Spring Training, be (a little) concerned about his weight, his at bats or his defense. But a guy having fun during ST or talking to fans, even the Hispanic speaking ones, or using his phone in the clubhouse seems the kind of thing that doesn't matter in any way at all.

The reports this spring validate PAST concerns...as in, he probably wasn't in the best shape in 2016, at a minimum.

Also, for my money, Reusse is a fantastic columnist who loves baseball and knows it very well. YMMV, of course.

Well he did write a column advocating Danny Santana as the every day short stop this year, so maybe he doesn't know as much about baseball as he once did?

Did Souhan forget that we brought in old players on the ST roster, and in the FO to provide leadership.  That discussion should be about Dozier Mauer being leaders not a 23 year old.  If he is having fun maybe it is a sign he is relaxing and fitting in.  As far as the phone, I was just on my porch with three seniors (and I am a senior) and all three of them had their phones in their hands, forget that criticism.  Let ST play out and see what happens when it counts and he is playing the position he has always played instead of OF roulette.

Time has passed Patrick and Jim by. Personally, I trust the little birdies on the east side of the river and the close personal friends on the west side more than either of those two ... or the beat writer on the west side for that matter?

And how much do I trust the birdies and CPFs? Not much at all.
