In 35 years, starting pitchers in the MLB will average less than 5 innings pitched per game. (The Twins are clearly ahead of this trend.)

Hypothetical grand kids: "Grandpa Van, can you tell us a story?"

GV: "Sure kids, sit on your hover mats, shut off your virtual world, and your grandpa will tell you a story about a baseball team well ahead of their time."

HGK: "We can't wait to hear this!"

GV: "The year was 2016, long before you, or your mother was even born! There was a team I loved to follow, the Minnesota Twins. In those days, starting pitchers would throw 6, 7, 8, sometimes even 9 innings in one night! Not those Twins though..... They were trend setters."

HGK: "Wow! They must have been really good, huh Grandpa Van?"

GV: "HA! They were not good, Kanye. Not good at all. In fact, most of the pitchers had a tough time throwing 5 complete innings. That's beside the point.... The point is, the Twins started a trend in baseball that pitchers shouldn't throw MORE than 5 innings! People were skeptical at first, thinking the tried and true method of throwing 7-8 innings worked the best. But the Twins kept up with it all season, and look at the game today!"

HGK: "That's amazing! Did they win a lot of games that year?"

GV: "Nope, not one bit Byron. Still, no one can deny them being the pioneers of this great trend in baseball. Now, who's hungry for zero calorie ice cream?!"

Incidentally, back in 2016, zero calorie ice cream was one of the most powerful laxatives known to man - and corn was the only vegetable that came on a cob.

Who cares?  In 35 years they will have a 35 man roster...

It's all about "how many times they think someone can go thru the order." Is it pushing to ask starting pitchers to face the same batters three times? Even in the bullpen, can you ask a pitcher to face the same batters more than once in a game (or a series). If pitchers would jsut tust their stuff and actually throw, they would put the ball in play, with the hitters hitting it to placement spots that you have seen over-and-over again, and outs made, and their pitching counts would also stay lower.

Maybe someday we will have nine pitchers pitch a nine-inning shutout/complete game.

Here's something to chew on.  In Tony Larussa's tenure as manager of the White Sox - late 70's, early 80's, he was actually contemplating an eight man pitching staff - that's 8 - e-I-g-h-t.  Leaving 17 position players.  He talked about a 4-man starting rotation, 1 swing man, 2 relievers and "closer" who could pitch 2-3 innings every game.  The most pitchers he would go with was nine.

Now we have to carry at least 12 pitchers and sometimes 13.  Unbelievable!!!

And remember this - TK had a 9-man staff for both of the World Series, with 3-man starting staffs for each:

87 - Viola, Blyleven, Straker

91 - Morris, Tapani, Erickson

Kanye becomes one of the most popular first names in America by 2032 after President Kanye West turns around the country ;)

As healthcare continues to evolve, who knows.... Maybe you'll be able to live long enough to see 2057! Lord knows modern medicine wasn't that great in Chief's time, and he's still living today! :)
