DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Occam's Razor. MLBNetwork was probably wrong.
TKGuy Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Sure he didn't deny he was being traded to the Reds?
buckshot4227 Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I also saw this on mlb network. Had to be a mistake.
chavez Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I saw the same thing. Looks like some crack reporting by MLB Network
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Occam's Razor. MLBNetwork was probably wrong. That's what I'm thinking.
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 MLB Network admits their mistake. Who knows what they were thinking.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Said it is unlikely he will be traded as Cinci doesn't want to part with young talent.
Musk21 Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 The Twins have such respect for their players that they ask them if it would be okay before trading them.
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBShearing denard span to #reds isnt happening. #twins
roger Verified Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a no-trade clause, so he really doesn't have any say.I can't imagine him having a no trade clause either. If he does, that would be another worse than bad move by Bill Smith.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 He probably declined to comment on trade scenarios but no one could understand him with Mitch Williams jabbering in the background.
roger Verified Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Just saying what was mentioned and shown on MLB Network.Watching the Rochester Columbus game. The Columbus announcers just mentioned that the Twins-REds were in serious discussions. A bit later mentioned that Span had turned down trade. May be same source.
jorgenswest Verified Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Asking price too high? Keep Span or lower price?
J-Dog Dungan Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Span to Reds is officially not happening, according to Jon Heyman
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Asking price too high? Keep Span or lower price?Keep Span. The Reds may reconsider if their leadoff hitters stink on national TV in a first round loss in the playoffs.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2012 Author Posted July 31, 2012 Keep Span. The Reds may reconsider if their leadoff hitters stink on national TV in a first round loss in the playoffs.Yeah, this. I really don't want to give up a guy like Span for a pu-pu platter. If we don't get a Gio/Latos/Pence like deal for him, don't trade him.
DPJ Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Keep Span. The Reds may reconsider if their leadoff hitters stink on national TV in a first round loss in the playoffs.Cause the leadoff hitter is often the cause of a team losing a playoff series.
John Bonnes Site Manager Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 According to MLBNetwork (TV)Huh? Span declined it? He doesn't have a no-trade clause, as far as we know.
Jim Crikket Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I saw the same thing. Looks like some crack reporting by MLB NetworkMLB Network reporters are on crack? Well... that explains SO much.
DPJ Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 MLB Network reporters are on crack? Well... that explains SO much. There are no lazier of reporters then god damn baseball writers/reporters. They can mindlessly say or tweet whatever they want.
ashbury Verified Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Yeah, this. I really don't want to give up a guy like Span for a pu-pu platter. If we don't get a Gio/Latos/Pence like deal for him, don't trade him.I'm all for getting a good return, but this sets the bar too high. Span is not considered above average at his position, by most. Should not expect to get the same haul for him.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Cause the leadoff hitter is often the cause of a team losing a playoff series. Is that what I said? I don't remember doing so if I did. Can you find that quote?
DPJ Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Is that what I said? I don't remember doing so if I did. Can you find that quote? Then what was the point of the post? Like if they lose in the first round and Cozart or whoever fail to get onbase they'll suddenly feel more pressed to make a trade. Cause that's what's gonna put them over the top?
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2012 Author Posted July 31, 2012 I'm all for getting a good return, but this sets the bar too high. Span is not considered above average at his position, by most. Should not expect to get the same haul for him.Not really. He's on pace for about a 4.5-5.0 WAR season, coupled with a very team friendly contract. Gio/Latos were trades betting on future (one looks like it'll work out, the other maybe not) and Pence, like Span, was a bit more of a known quantity. Span is likely to be worth a ton over his remaining contract. You shouldn't trade him for a #3 starter and bullpen arm.
jorgenswest Verified Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Huh? Span declined it? He doesn't have a no-trade clause, as far as we know.Later corrected. The Reds have declined. Not Span. I hope the networks error doesn't stick to Span or the Twins.
Jim Crikket Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 There are no lazier of reporters then god damn baseball writers/reporters. They can mindlessly say or tweet whatever they want. Not to hijack this thread (though there seem to be a few other Span/Reds threads, so maybe it would be OK), but being a real baseball writer/reporter is a tough gig these days. Either you aren't out there getting news regarding your assigned beat first (perhaps due to those pesky journalistic ethics that require multiple sources before reporting news) and thus you're "lazy" or you DO report (via social media) things you hear from only one source and you therefore get it wrong occasionally and you've "mindlessly tweeted whatever you want". Kinda makes me glad I dropped out of journalism school.
jokin Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I'm all for getting a good return, but this sets the bar too high. Span is not considered above average at his position, by most. Should not expect to get the same haul for him. Though definitely not Mike Trout in CF, Span is ranked #4 in UZR among all CFs for the seasons 2010-2012 (#3 in adjusted UZR/150) and is basically in the top 7 CFs this year in WAR. Erock Verified Member Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Twins have no pressure to trade Span. It's a good sign that the Reds declined, rather see that than the Twins getting bullied around. Maybe he still gets traded today, but he's valuable to us as a player for his remaining contract and he'll be valuable in the off-season and next season for trades too.

Cause that's what's gonna put them over the top?If they lose in the first round they ARE going to look for ways to put them over the top by upgrading weaknesses, just like every club. As it turns out they have a weakness at CF and leadoff, which is why they had interest in Span in the first place.
