Wow, Bert just said we have 6 more errors than we had all of last season and only the Brewers have more than us currently. I didn't realize it was that bad.

For all the complaining about how Official Scorers don't call things correctly, we all sure put a lot of stock in the stats they produce. :)

In all honesty, the "error" stat has never been more legitimate.  If you get charged with an error these days, it's an out that absolutely, positively should have been an out.  It's danged near impossible to be charged with an error these days.

The only exception would be when an outfielder makes a good throw, it hits a sliding runner and gets away, allowing runner(s) to advance.  That's sometimes a tough error.

Otherwise, the error stat is absolutely one good way to judge defense.

Huh? What's that mean?

It's a line from Major League when Uecker exaggerated a slow ground ball on the radio.

You and I just aren't on the same page today ChiTown. It's 99% on me, but that 1%....

I love that statue. Can I have it? The Eternal Face-Palm...

True, but this ignores the larger number of absolutely, positively should have been an outs that aren't called errors. Unless there is absolute consistency among scorers (which the scorers will of course say there is), you are judging players by a minority of plays that are categorized arbitrarily.

It's a bit akin to defending Byron Buxton by showing the future stars who got off to rough starts, while ignoring the larger number of guys who got off to rough starts and stayed rough forever.

So, how many of you have gotten a hole in one?

Too bad spinowner isn't here; he could tell you all about the one he got back in high school playing the local course. :)

And he got his name in the paper and everything!

raises hand.

but it was on the shortest hole on a short par-3 course, so maybe it doesn't count.  Although...I still had to buy beers, so I count it.

0 :(. Sadly I don't even have a near miss story that comes to mind. It shouldn't be so hard to do!

Pitcher's duel. Pretty good game.

No doubt. Even if we may have an ulterior motive on what to do with Erv this offseason, it's fun to watch him wheel and deal out there.

And perhaps pin the thread for a certain period of time?

As a warning to future posters? Kind of like a skull on a pike?
