What happens when Gibson comes back?

Recommended Posts

Non-existent dilemmas that Twins fans probably shouldn't waste a millisecond worrying about:

1.    Any B+ or better prospect being blocked by an above-average player on the 25 man roster.

2.    A Twins front office exec being hired away before the Twins can promote him to GM when Ryan retires.

3.     Paul Molitor being lured to another team by more money when his contract is up.

4.    Deciding which one of many lights-out closer candidates to give the ball to in the 9th.

And,   for the LOVE OF GOD,   after FIVE YEARS of the rotation ranging from fair to mostly awful,   can we PLEASE stop worrying about...

5.   Too much good starting pitching,    until it actually happens.

Well, I have to admit even as a fan of Berrios I am feeling negative towards how good he can be. I mean okay he has only 4 MLB starts, but after 4 starts last year Tyler Duffey showed real promise and improvement, Berrios has shown some glimpses of improvement but has yet to have that one game where everything comes together.

Don't you remember how Gibson and May debuted? They were terrible in their first few starts. I remember May throwing tons of walks in his few starts at the end of 2014, but then the next season he got things together. I wouldn't worry too much about Berrios. You shouldn't normally expect Duffey-like results from rookie starters, but it is frustrating to see talented guys like Berrios struggling early on.

I guess the season is so poor that I might overreact to something like Berrios poor start because a prospect like him is SUPPOSED to be a bright spot, not another problem. I just want to state that I WANT Jose Berrios to succeed, not just because he has looked the part of a successful pitcher on the mound, but because he seems hungry and really seems to try so hard to succeed.

Why? Berrios supposedly is as competitive as Duffey with a better pitch selection as Duffey and has been praised for his work ethic. So why is Berrios pitching so scared? Damn, I wanted to see him pitch the rest of the season, but at best he probably won't be back until the end of July. Dang, because we need an ace and he was (or is) the closest we can have as an ace (if we look at his potential). What has gone so wrong? I expected struggles, not a 10.70 ERA.

He's 21 years old! Duffey was pitching for Elizabethton at that age.

OK people.  It's not the end of the world.  Rookies struggle.  That's why the front office goes out and gets those mediocre vets.  I'm guessing much Berrios's problem is nerves more than anything else.  He has a reputation in the minors of impeccable control, which was clearly lacking last night.  He'll get another chance.

The original post you replied to said "I'd like to see Hughes to the bullpen or the DL but realistically I see Berries getting sent back down."

Who were you referring to, with the small sample comment?

If he keeps having trouble making it out of the first, then yes.

I timed my evening last night to mow and listen to the Twins game because I knew Berrios was pitching, I really wanted to hear how he did. I used to do the same when Johan would pitch, I made sure I tuned in because you knew you were listening to something special and the Twins had a good chance to win that night.  After they were down 8-0 I actually turned it over to rock and roll. Then during the ads I'd swap back to the Twins for a few minutes. Ah a two run homer, down 8-2. Back to R&R and Alice Cooper. Next time I tuned in it was 8-4! Swell!!! Then they tied it up!!! But still lost :(

What was really disappointing about last night is that even though the Twins are losing you can look forward to the prospects -- and then the best starting prospect gets shelled. And he really hasn't been that good in his previous starts. And the Twins other hot-shot prospect - Buxton - is already back in AAA. Yes I know its a learning experience and hopefully they'll make adjustments and become the stars that we hope but -- its just disappointing. Its going to be a long summer.

Berrios has stuff but he has given no indication so far that he is ready for the big leagues.

That's bunk. All he does is dominate in the minors. He's got nothing to gain by going down there. And up here, we've got a team that has nothing to lose. Let him take his lumps. It's got to happen some time.

Well, it turns out we didn't even have to wait a few weeks for Kyle Gibson to come back, or veteran Phil Hughes to pitch better.  Pat Dean in a mop-up performance was enough to send Berrios packing...

I'd like to take back my berrios stays up all year post.....

Little did you know, 12 hours later...... I'm starting to think you're some kind of psychic Mike. Please post the powerball numbers just as an experiment.

If I could win the Powerball......I'd not be at work right now, multi tasking......

"Hughes cannot survive in the rotation with a 91mph fastball" in no way means "No one can survive in a rotation with a 91mph fastball"

Get back to me in a few years and let me know if he's Greg Maddux or (insert middle of the road Gardy era Twins starter here)

Hughes relied on that fastball up in the zone. When it was sitting at 94, he could get a lot of pop ups and fly balls, with some strikeouts. At 90, it's getting squared up way more often.

And Duffy's won't second or third time around the league?

Well, maybe. I'm far from sold on Duffey but he has a 90mph fastball, an 83mph change, and a 78mph curve. That's a 12mph spread on his pitches and the fastball/curve have very different looks to them.

Hughes has similar splits but his curve isn't nearly as bendy and he throws it about 60% as often as Duffey throws his curves.

And results matter. Duffey has been getting them, Hughes has not. So you keep throwing the guy with the results out there until something changes.

Like teams getting a second or third look at him?

Wait... what? How in the world did you make that jump?

"Hughes cannot survive in the rotation with a 91mph fastball" in no way means "No one can survive in a rotation with a 91mph fastball"

In what possible way to get you that I was comparing Duffey to Greg Maddux?

My point is we better be hoping he's closer to Maddux than Blackburn, Baker, Slowey.

I'm still completely confused what your point is or why you're telling me that.  You felt I needed a reminder that Greg Maddux is good, Nick Blackburn is bad?

It's possible but we just don't know what will happen until teams actually get a second or third look at him.

In 14 career starts, the guy has a 2.73 ERA and a 3.17 FIP. He has earned his shot to get an extended look.

What I'm saying is guys without elite velocity generally end up being either Maddux or Blackburn.  We can certainly hope for Maddux but reality is usually Blackburn.  It also usually takes a few years to realize what's happening too.
