Stat Question

Recommended Posts

After the Twins' win Tuesday night, I got to think about the "winning" pitcher of the evening. Kevin Jepsen came on in the top of the ninth for the save. He subsequently blew the save, but "earned" the win thanks to Sano's game-ending single in the bottom of the inning.

Maybe my fellow TD posters or the contributors of the site can help me with a couple of questions I have regarding Jepsen's feat..

  1. Is the "blown save/win" a stat that has been tracked? If so, where (by whom)?
  2. Who is the all-time leader in the category? What's the record for a single-season? What's the longest streak of appearances with a blown save/win? Etc, Etc, Etc.
  3. Does the stat have a name other than "blown save/win?" Do you agree with me that such a weird and funny stat needs a representative weird and funny name, too?

It has to be so strange for a closer to come in and blow the save but get a win thanks to his teammates. It only happens to the home team, so there's the dynamic of the closer, fresh from blowing the save, being forced into the awkward situation of seeing their team celebrate shortly thereafter. How bad does he feel running out on the field to mob his teammate? Can he really celebrate without thinking that his teammates are looking at him like, "really, you're out here?"

On the 3rd question, I think if the stat doesn't have a good name, we at Twins Daily should lead the charge and come up with one. Calling it a "Jepsen" is probably too harsh and reactionary. Ideas?

It can happen to a visiting pitcher as well, it's just that the win would not be a walk-off. There have been many times when a pitcher loses a lead in a save situation in the bottom of the 8th but gets the win when his team scores in the top of the ninth.

I don't think it is "tracked" but It *should* be easy to find -- just do a Play Index search at B-Ref for games where are pitcher got both a blown save and a win.  Although looking at the play index form, it doesn't look like you can search for both of those decisions simultaneously... and I'm not a Play Index subscriber right now, so I don't feel like I should ask for that upgrade.

In any case, if you get that part working, you'd probably also have to filter by inning entering the game, or you'd get a lot of setup men who blew leads prior to the 9th inning (which technically counts as a "blown save" even though it really isn't a save opportunity in modern practice anymore).

I have no problem with this stat as is.   If a reliever gives up too many he gets both a blown save and a loss.     Blown save/win means he gave up a score but still kept his team in it by limiting the damage.   Yes, his teammates bailed him out but it is a team game and many baseball stats are team dependent.

This has been commonly referred to as "vulturing" a W in the past.  Blow someone else's W, end up with the W yourself.

It's not the end of the world. Which nickname would you prefer to have, Phil "The Vulture" Regan or Hugh "Losing Pitcher" Mulcahy? :)

It's not tracked that I know of, but as a general rule of thumb, any wins and losses a closer has is likely a blown save as well.  Blown saves are tracked for the record.

such as Jesse "The Vulture" Crain in 2005?

Crain had only 3 blown saves that year.  Now Capps had 9 BS and wins for the Pirates that year. If they were the same games I do not know.
