I assume though that insurance kicks in, so the team may still get some salary relief out of this.

i'm not sure where his deal falls in that spectrum, but such insurance is no longer offered to teams. It was a loser for insurance agencies, no matter what their premium, so they just stopped offering it to the teams. An individual can insure himself, but the team can't insure their losses on him.

I thought I read where Texas is responsible for 9 million per year, insurance will pay 9 million per year, and Detroit will pay 6 million per year.  So there is a little relief there.  Instead of paying 72 million, Texas is on the hook for 36.

In today's edition of "Other Teams Make Questionable Decisions Too,"  Blake Swihart needs ankle surgery.  Apparently those clowns in Boston thought it was a good idea to have a top 20 prospect--a catcher no less--running around in the outfield.  What were they thinking?

The Cubs optioned a 27 year old guy, Tommy La Stella, who was hitting .295/.388/.457, in order to keep unoptionable Chris Coghlan around, who is hitting .158/.253/.276  in 229 plate appearances.  Now La Stella is considering retirement.  Maroons.

Michael Brantley has had yet another setback, and may require surgery!  Sheesh.  Those guys should invest in one of those Star Trek, Dr. McCoy Insta-scanner thingeys.  Ultramaroons.

Blue Jays release Franklin Morales after getting just 4 innings out of him this year.  For $2 million bucks, they could've signed Fernando Abad AND Brandon Kintzler and still had money left over to hire a food truck to feed their entire sabermetric staff.  However big that is.  Maybe one guy on a bike from Jimmie Johns would've been enough.  How the hell would I know.

The Swihart decision was more of a desperation move instead of him just not being able to play C, right? I really don't know much about it, but it seems very silly to move a highly ranked young C away from the position.

Sucks to hear about Brantley. I enjoyed watching him play, and this is a completely lost season for him. He should be hitting his peak right now at 29 years old.

This kind of thing never happens when I am the grand poohbah of an organization in Out Of The Park baseball game on my PC. I maintain a complete backup team at AAA consisting of experienced five-star young studs, just waiting for an injury in the majors so they can get their chance, and they are grateful for the minor league money.

Kubel? Like....injured in a collision?

Like get himself hurt in a way that causes him to never be able to realize his full potential.

He's been showing pretty heavy fatigue at AA (nevermind struggling to even be the third-best offensive player on the team at any time since joining AA), and I have a bad feeling he's going to make a bad choice somewhere as he presses and end up hurt. I was worried about it for AA - moving him to the bigs makes it infinitely worse.

Pretty much a procedural thing.  If they release Hamilton now, they free up the 40-man roster spot for the winter, which is particularly important since Prince Fielder's insurance money already requires him to be on the 40-man roster.

And now they have more freedom to re-sign Hamilton to a minor league deal if they want.  (If they released him after September 1st this year, he would not be eligible to re-sign with the Rangers until May 15th next year.)

Hamilton has just one guaranteed season left (2017), and the Rangers were already only on the hook for $2 million of that (the vast majority of his contract is being paid by the Angels).

How does Jeff Francoeur continue to be a commodity? I'm surprised every year when some team sticks him on their 25-man, and now he's been traded for two prospects despite his .671 OPS, poor defense and inability to get on base. Neither player is highly rated but the SS the Braves got from the Rangers has 42 XBH (14 HR) and 40 SB. Again, he's a SS.

I'm not saying the Braves got a haul, but how is Francoeur tradable? He seems like he should be a DFA candidate. Like nearly every year.

I guess he still is living up to his reputation for having a rocket arm in the OF? It's just as mind boggling to me as it is to you.

He seems like he'd be a great teammate. Plus, he's got a good nickname. But yeah, I don't really get it either.

To be fair, he isn't much of a commodity.  This is the first time he has been traded in 6 years, and he's been released 3 times in that span (and allowed to leave as a free agent 3 more times in that span too).  His last two contracts have both come from the worst teams in baseball.

But he's probably the only thing available for a desperate team in late August.

(An aside, but the Francoeur trade confirms my suspicion that the Dodgers have indeed not tried to "give away" Puig.)

Slight tangent: I know us Twins fans have to deal with Danny Santana, but how frustrating would it be to be a Braves fan watching Jeff Francoeur play in 99 games for that awful team? Plus they've got Kemp and Markakis as two other old guys taking up time in the outfield. I'm glad we get to see Kepler and Rosario in the outfield instead of what the Braves are dealing with.

Right, this is mostly just a carryover thought I have each spring when I see that he is somehow, someway back on a MLB roster.

Well, the Braves expected to lose (want to lose?) and they have very few options.  On a relative scale, I can't imagine any Braves fan being too frustrated with any one player or decision.

And somehow the Braves managed to flip Francoeur for something -- I'd gladly move Danny Santana for some international bonus pool cash, or any kind of prospect...

I think you could say neither player is rated, period.  The catcher in particular appears to be the very definition of org filler (40th round pick last year who has seen scant playing time in rookie league ball since).

The "SS the Braves got" is not a shortstop.  He's been primarily a 1B this year, but has played basically everywhere but catcher (he even pitched).

Still, I'd take him over Francoeur, except the Braves also had to send an international bonus slot away in the deal too, so it's not quite a pure Francoeur for minor leaguer swap.  (Considering the Rangers gave up the semi-interesting prospect, and got back a lot of international bonus pool money, Francoeur may not even be the key figure in the deal.)
