It was a horrible call.  Good to see the umpire's ego's are in mid-season form.  Why not just make an appeal?

Good for Hunter, it makes me mad to see him get fined.

You think it's okay for a player to go off on an umpire like that and not get fined?  Should Joe West have checked with the 1B umpire?  Sure.  Does West need to be better? Sure. But that doesn't excuse Hunter's rant after the game, taking personal shots at the umpire.  This is a grown man and he's supposed to be a professional.  He should be fined, as should any player who does that.

I don't think check swings can be appealed.

I think that the commissioner should say something about Joe West and that call...

Umpires need accountability.

What about the Umpire? don't you think he should be fined for not granting an appeal? I certainly do.

Sure.  Hunter should be fined, but West should be suspended because he affected the outcome of the game with his call.

Bring robots.

umpires are reviewed all the time. he's been fined before.  this time, though, he only made an arguably  bad call.  he didn't do his normal routine of getting in the player's face, which is something new for him.  he showed restraint.

He wanted to get to that dinner.

If the rules require an appeal to 1B umpire, maybe.  But I don't think they do.  As far as I know, only the defense can ask for an appeal and it doesn't need to be granted. Could be wrong.  Does someone have the rule handy?

It MAY have affected the outcome.  That's assuming Hunter does something at the plate as well as others.

The batter can ask for a appeal, Miguel Cabrera does it all the time.

I am NOT defending the call.  I would have appealed to 1B if I was the home plate umpire, for sure. But just because a player doesn't like a call doesn't mean he can should be allowed to go off on an umpire taking personal shots.

No excuse for Hunter, but Joe West has built up a lot of bad will among players and managers over the years, and frankly, is an embarrassment to baseball.

I agree with this. Unfortunately, regardless of the bad call, he did exactly what everyone says they want him to do when confronted by a player.  He walked away and didn't get right back in the player's face.

Further proof that there was a dinner reservation...

The batter can ask for a appeal, Miguel Cabrera does it all the time.

'Initially, the home plate umpire must determine if a swing was checked or not checked. If he indicates that it was checked, an appeal can be made by the catcher or his manager, and the home plate umpire CAN then make a request to either the 1st or 3rd base umpire to make the call as to whether or not the swing was indeed checked.'

I don't see anything about the batter being able to appeal.  I also don't see where it HAS to be granted. Anyone have something else from the rules?

It wasn't like Torii was saying, "My mental facilities are twice what yours are, you dumb peabrain." He was just saying that West made a bad call, that he should be doing a good job, and that basically he wasn't paying attention to the game.

There aren't any good restaurants in Detroit  where you'd need/want to make a reservation.  :-)

Maybe he was going to go play at a concert.

And he was taking personal shots at the man.  And BTW, Torii shouldn't have bit at that pitch either. Did bring back memories though.
