fangraphs grades

Not sure how long this has been going on but fangraphs has the scouting grades of most minor leaguers, even those outside the team top 10.  I believe the grades are done by McDaniel who tends to be a harsh grader but it gives a nice idea of where the players are now and where they might project.  Low A guys and rookies are far enough away that most won't get a future value better than 45 at this point but it's interesting to see the grades for guys like Turner, Kepler and Harrison.

Oooh, thanks. He previously had them for just the very top prospects in the systems he had completed his write-ups for. I wonder when he updated this. Will definitely check them out.

I like how Kiley has Berrios #3. And then I get concerned about Gordon being as high as #4.

Also, see this organizational overview by Dave Cameron on the same story.

'The Twins are firmly in rebuilding mode, but in that awkward stage when their young talent hasn’t developed yet, so they find themselves filling roster spots with veterans who have no real future with the organization. These kinds of seasons give the team chances to find unexpected core pieces like Brian Dozier, but it also forces the team’s fan base to sit through way too much of Kevin Correia and Mike Pelfrey. They aren’t particularly close to contending, so expect a few more years of sifting until they finally try and put a contender on the field again.' (yes, he knows Correia is gone too, he was just talking about what we've had ti  sit through as the rebuilding has been going on.)

Something looks wrong there.  All five of those guys have a 20 hitting rating on a 20-80 scale?  There's just no way that's the case.  Or is that some other scale that's being used?

The first number is the present grade.  IE - if they were put in the majors today, that's how they'd hit.  And that's probably right - Rosario had trouble hitting in AA and he was the most advanced.  None of those guys, today, would be able to hit in the majors.  The second number is the projected ability to hit in the future - ie, when they are settled into the majors.

Where is power?

Posted

Rosario - B

Turner - D

Walker - E

Kepler - A

Harrison - C

I am going with this same one.  Primarily based on the speed rating.

Posted

I can't believe anyone would give Rosario and Turner the same grade for hitting! I do like games though. My guess is:

Kepler-A

Rosario-B

Walker-C

Turner-D

Harrison-E

Posted

I thought there were some interesting perceptions. I left the power grade off intentionally. I wanted this to serve as a more difficult grading option The results are as followed:

A). ROSARIO.

B ) KEPLER

C). HARRISON

D). TURNER

E). WALKER

Do these results cloud your view of what you thought you knew about any of these respective prospects?

What was your rationale for your individual grades?

Fangraph Power Grades were as followed:

Rosario (A)

Game Power  20/45

Raw Power  50/50

Kepler  (B )

Game Power  20/50

Raw Power  50/50

Harrison  (C )

Game Power  20/45+

Raw Power  50/50

Turner  (D)

Game Power  20/40

Raw Power  45/45+

Walker  (E)

Game Power  30/55

Raw Power  65/65

Would these Power results have altered your original guesses?

Does it enhance or sour your thoughts of certain prospects? or neither?

Do most of you look at Fangraph as a legitimate publication and / or resource?

absolutely, and so do many teams. In fact, the guy who does their prospect rankings has worked in at least one major league front office.

In Kiley mini-bio" 'Staff writer of FanGraphs. Joined in August, 2014. McDaniel serves as the lead prospect analyst and head of the FanGraphs scout team. He previously worked for the New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles and wrote for Scout.com and ESPN's Draft Blog.'

I am a little surprised at Kepler's speed rating.  I had Rosario pegged as the faster runner.  I used speed to determine my list as with the rest of the ratings I couldn't tell who was who.

I don't think these ratings mean that much to me.  Hard to say who will turn out and who won't.  It is just another piece of the puzzle predicting what they might or might not become.  I am happy with the potential of all those guys.  Now they just need to prove they can play and continue to move up.

I'm sure there's a lot of things that went in to that decision.  Fangraphs has an amazing following now.  He runs the scouting crew for them, etc.

Some have mentioned they wouldn't even want to work for a team.

It's ok.  I think McDaniel and Hulet are pretty good at the prospecting stuff.  Fun to read their views.

Considering that most prospects have only 3 to 4 true Tools, which 3 of  these 5 graded Tools do you value as the most needed for becoming a high valued MLB player?

Hit

Speed

Power

Field

Throws

Let's focus on "Game Power".  So Adam Walker who hit 25 HRs at Fort Myers this season is ranked a hair higher than Harrison and Kepler who hit 3 and 5 in the same team respectively?

This makes me think not too much about the authors...

The grade isn't for their minor league numbers.  A 30 is an indication of what kind of game power Walker would show now, if he was put in the majors.  They note that he has big time raw power but to translate that into a game is difficult and they are saying he would have trouble doing that now, if he were in the majors.  That makes sense considering his difficulty with A+ pitching.

Understood.

But. If a guy hits 25 HRs in the minors he is more than a hair likely to hit more HRs in the majors than guys who hit 3 and 5.

For me it's Speed - Power - Arm

Those are the God given Tools

Good coaching can help with the Hit and Fielding Tool.  Not to the point of being great at it, but to the point of being serviceable to allow the God given Tools stand out.  Those are the only 2 Tools keeping Buxton from staring in CF to start the season.  His God given Tools are good enough for him to play right now.

Good Coaching and Hard Work is so underated.

Maybe he doesn't want to work for a front office anymore? maybe this gives him more freedom? I think judging his opinions based on the fact he decided to switch jobs is, well, not good.

I think so too.  Well, maybe humor enwrapping a kernel of truth, but no, I wouldn't "base" my judgement on any one thing.  Was just sayin'.
