Gardy32 Verified Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Twins SS for Mets SP? http://www.rotoworld.com/headlines/mlb/451177/report-tulo-to-mets-is-not-happening According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York the Mets are not getting Tulowitzki, and it sounds like they are looking for a trade partner for a SS. Twins aren't mentioned in the article. I don't know too much about the Mets farm system other than they have a plethora of SP arms. Sounds like an ideal trade partner for the Twins. -Danny Santana: Would fetch more on the market, but could be a building block we'd like to keep in our infield.-Eduardo Escobar: Seemingly a player without a spot in the Twins infield. Would bring a smaller return, but seems replaceable to the Twins.-Jorge Polanco: Twins would be looking for prospect SP arms. MiLB for MiLB trades are rare, so this might not have much play for the Mets. Especially since they just signed Cuddy for 2 years and appear to be going all in for the next 2 years. Thoughts?
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Yeah, it does look like some room for a trade but I don't think either Santana or Escobar brings back a top 100 prospect. I don't think Polanco would have any value to the Mets as they seem to be in "win-now" mode. I guess the biggest question mark is whether the Mets believe that either Santana or Escobar can be good defensive shortstops.
jorgenswest Verified Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 It will take some time for the SS free agent market to sort out. The Mets might see Ramirez, Lowrie, Drew or Cabrera as viable options. The Twins need those two as much as the Mets do. Both Escobar and Santana are valuable next year and in the future. It needs to be a good return for the Twins. The Mets would probably opt to spend the money on a free agent rather than meet the demands of the Twins in prospects.
Brandon Verified Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 I think the Potential is there for a deal. there are several teams looking for a SS and We are looking for a starting pitcher. there's a big list of quality pitchers who will be free agents after the season. Next year will be better for signing a pitcher in free agency then this one. I would be surprised if there isn't a trade. Escobar's .721 OPS placed 6th in MLB last year among SS. He is likely close to being a top 10 even if he regresses a little.. His defense is above average so He should have some value.
James Richter Provisional Member Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Any return for Escobar or Polanco would be fairly modest at this point. If I were the Twins, I'd be trying to gauge how other teams value Santana, though. If somebody out there wants to buy him as a cost-controlled, .825 OPS, 5 WAR dynamo instead of the .700 OPS shaky fielder he was in the minors, that's an easy win. Sell high...
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I'd be interested for a starting pitcher if he's a high ceiling one. The problem is that I don't see either Santana or Escobar getting that right now. If they do, great, but I'm going to remain skeptical. If the Twins wanted to trade one of them, I think they'd have a better chance getting a young LF with above average defense and a slightly above average bat. I'd take that in a heart beat for one of those guys.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 There are better options out there for the Mets. Also the Twins have zero incentive to trade someone like Polanco, unless they get what the Red Sox got from the Marlins for what's-his-name.

Sounds like an ideal trade partner for the Twins. -Danny Santana: -Eduardo Escobar: -Jorge Polanco: Thoughts? Is it possible the Mets might go for Danny Santana for Rafael Montero? Probably not. Escobar won't bring you too much of what the Twins need all by himself in trade. Jon Niese was on the block last year and passed through waivers in August. He has a very favorable contract, including 2 team option years in 2017 and 2018- the year that Niese turns 31. I'm sure there must have been inquiries last August, and the Mets were probably asking too much, but they really appear to be highly motivated to want to move Niese or Dillon Gee (I'm not a fan in his case) to clear the way for their SP prospects and raise some more cash for more FA signings. I'm not sure what it would take, but time is no longer on the Mets side to make this move.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Escobar plus a pitching prospect (not Meyer or Berrios) for one of the Mets current starters? I'm not great at determining value, but Escobar is not arb eligible this year and would be under team control for four more years. He offers versatility and is a switch hitter. There is some value there.
Otwins Verified Member Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Escobar does have more value in the National league IMHO because he can play multiple positions. They do more double switch moves. I have no idea what he would bring in a trade. Doubt that he would bring a starter that we would be happy about.
shs_59 Provisional Member Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I would think DeGrom , Syndergaard, Wheeler, and Harvey would be near un-touchable by Mets Fans' standards...... (remember they wernen't even willing to give up Fernando Martinez or Mike Pelfrey for Johan Santana , they insisted on Phill Humber BOO) That leaves Rafael Montero and Guys like Dillon Gee and Jon Niese, none of whom project as anything more than #3 or #4 staters at this point, The one thing i for-see the Twins having plenty of (its top 2 Sp's we need) Thus, I see this whole discussion as almost a moot point, and probably a bad idea. Just not quite an ideal match in my mind. I'd think about this offer though: Eduardo EscobarAnthony Swarzakand Trevor May or maybe Tyler Duffey or something along those lines(maybe Duffey and someone like A.B. Walker)For Zach Wheeler I highly doubt they bite on that.
iTwins Verified Member Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I think to get one of the Mets' high ceiling SP prospects, the Twins would have to be willing to part with a similar high ceiling SS prospect - IE. Danny Santana. The question is, would you trade Danny (a potential HUGE asset at SS) for SP? If you think Danny's breakout was a fluke, absolutely...but I'd be nervous to call his great rookie year a fluke. I wouldn't make the trade unless the Twins could convince the Mets to take Escobar or Polanco instead. I like Danny's upside to much to trade him. It's a tough call, and the biggest reason why I don't envy Terry Ryan's position. Sell high or end up giving up a quality SS from a team that hasn't had a good SS in years...? I'm glad it's someone else's decision!
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I'd trade Santana for a high ceiling pitcher and I wouldn't think twice about it. I like Santana, but Escobar is still here and is an above average SS, and the ceiling drop off between Santana and Escobar is a lot smaller than the one between a guy like Wheeler/Syndergard and a 5th starter.
Sam Morley Verified Member Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Right now, it's looking like Danny Santana is going to have to play CF and SS at the same time. I think we need him.
Marek Houston Wichita Wind Surge - AA SS On Saturday, Houston went 3-for-5 and scored two runs. After a short slump, he is now back over .290 on the season. Explore Marek Houston News >
