Revisiting the Wil Myers trade

Yes. Added value to the trade. And if the Royals collapsed this year they also could have traded him at the deadline and recouped some of the value they gave up initially.

This isn't mentioned nearly enough in my opinion.

Unless you are the Twins! See Willingham and Suzuki.

Um, did josh willingham just take a pitch for a single the other way?

After the game he will he quoted as saying that he learned to do that when in MN

The difference is that Shields would actually have legitimate value at the deadline, not imagined value used to further criticize the front office.

Wow - that was quite the playoff game.

Hopefully we have another 40 or so close to that.

Actually, the difference is that the Royals were in contention, and therefore had no reason to trade away older assets at the deadline.

You are correct, these guys are not James Shields. But both were having career years, and the Twins obviously weren't. It would have been a good time to cash in!

I thin this turned out much better for Kansas City then they could ever have imagined.  Especially after winning last night.  Though KC was not likely to improve by this much after the trade, I guess he really helped some of the younger pitchers along with Vargas and Guthrie.

If I were Dayton Moore I would try to sign Shields and trade one of Guthrie or Vargas to help balance the payroll some and try again next year.  Especially if they make it to the next round in the playoffs.

But anytime you can make a trade that helps propel you to the playoffs its a win.  Especially when its been 29 years since your team last went to the playoffs.

This is derailing the thread and been discussed often on this forum, but again, cash in for what?

And they did ultimately get something for Willingham.

Lots of good posts in this thread.

•The game? Thanks Twins! They invented game 163 drama, and MLB was smart enough to pick up on it.

•Wil Myers? For every Wil Myers trade, there is a Bagwell trade waiting to haunt you. Risky business.

•Shields looked great last night, in spite of Yost - I'd welcome into the Twins fold with open arms. He looks like he has  LOTS left in the tank.

•Loved watching Finnegan proceed over the A's wake. He was brilliant. Like Sale, once in a while you see immediate dividends in the draft.

It's not true anymore though.

I agree that the Twins are much less hesitant to advance players the last several years, at least the hitters.

On the other hand, does anyone truly believe that had the Twins drafted Finnegan that there was any chance that he would have been called up this year under any circumstances?  The Royals called him up from AA after he started in High A, and he was a starter, not your typical two-pitch relief pitcher who's rough edges are more easily overlooked.  Burdi never even got out of A ball.
