Gary is not Chicago.  It's not even in the same state.

Gary is what Gary is because of Chicago.  The rest of Indiana doesn't even let them be in the same time zone.

The only good thing about Indiana is that it is only 24 miles wide! (If you sneak into Michigan). On another interesting note, I found it surprising that the Indiana hiway patrol thinks seat belt usage is a good idea. Surprising and might I add expensive!

I used to stop at a place off Columbus av. There was a funeral home on the way, with bars on the windows.... (Free beer to the first "they were dying to get in"). If it says we cash checks, in more than 3 languages, I get confused.

Several years ago I relocated for work to Eastern time.  Coasted into an interstate gas station with an empty tank.  Knew it was very low but drove through Gary anyway.

 

Went through after dark and remember thinking that if my company had offered me a promotion in Gary or my existing position in a city that looked just like the opening dystopian cityscape scene in Blade Runner, I'd have been like...'Uh, let me research the school situation a little'.

Maybe that's why while driving through it my head grew heavy and my sight grew dim.  Didn't stop for the night, though the warm smell of colitas made it tempting.
