Morris, TK, or Smalley?

Has anyone heard Coomer with his new gig? He always struck me as down to earth but still too uneven and rough around the edges. Perhaps a season or two with training wheels would be good enough to bring him back as the future replacement.

TK is absolutely brutal to listen to. Regardless of how much insight a person may provide, anyone in that kind of position should have some level of public speaking skills. TK has none whatsoever. I groan every time I tune in and find that TK is in there. I'd prefer Morris out of the 3.

 

Actually if I had it my way, Provus and Gladden would be doing TV play by play. Bremer and whoever can go to radio.

At least if Gladden were on TV we would know what's going on more than 10% of the time compared to his PbP work on the radio.

All lot of votes for monotony. That doesn't surprise me. Of the choices, I like Morris. But the real catch would be Jim Kaat. I find TK's analysis often as outdated as the "Twins Way". Mostly........ I don't use any of the audio. Just watch the games with other music or multi-tasking.

Looks like Im in the minority, but I like Roy Smalley. He seems to do his homework, he follows along with the game action (what should the pitch be here? what kind of defense the play here. etc). The biggest drawback is that he loves his own voice and uses 5000 words to make his point.

 

I like Tom Kelly in the booth too, but I dont think I could take 100 games of him.

To be honest, I hardly care about who is commentating a baseball game on TV. I'm usually focusing on the baseball game, so I hardly hear them or what they are saying doesn't really register. It's like ambience to me.

Seriously? He never tells you what's actually going on during the play. He's worse than Lonny from major league two.

 

At least Lonny was accurate. None of this "the ball hit in the air to the outfield, and the shortstop makes the unassisted putout" or "the ball is heading towards the gap... and the first baseman makes the putout."

Ditto. I tune them out. I don't even have to mute it. At this point, it's mostly the same thing being said over and over every single game. At least it is if it's Dick/Bert.

 

I like TK, but I zone him out quite easily and I can't handle him for more than 1-2 games in a row just because when I do hear him I want to fall asleep. I really haven't noticed Morris at all. Smalley bugs me the most just because of what benchwarmerjim said. It takes him 5000 words to get to the point. If someone keeps talking non-stop, then I notice. Take a breather.

I think it would be fun if they would just open up the mikes and broadcast the sounds of the game a few times a year. They could do a little studio update between innings just to keep things on track but forget the talking heads on occasion.

Butterfingers, I get why some Dont like dazzle. There is no question he lacks polish, and always will. But that's actually what I like about him. I prefer him doing commentary as opposed to play by play. But I enjoy that he's a former player, that he's not a broadcaster, that he has a few rough edges. I like the stories and the perspective. Again, I prefer him in more of a commentary role.

I listen to the Twins on 57.0 WNAX out of Yankton as I have my whole life. The past couple of seasons, I watch on phone and IPad every game I can. But for whatever reason, I often miss the games where any of the mentioned are used as fill-ins, catching each only occasionally.

 

I mentioned liking Larkin when hearing him before. Inexperienced but OK. I like Morris when I've heard him. TK is a little dry to be sure, but that's just TK, and I actually like his dry wit. Baseball wise, not sure you could find anyone more savvy.

 

I still like Bert. He's casual, relaxed and makes me laugh. Not a bad thing.

 

Having not heard the "candidates" in this post enough to vote properly, may I ask, other than Coomer who we probably can't get back any time soon, who else would you like to see "audition" for a role?

I think I heard him for a few minutes about a week ago. I'm pretty sure he was talking about hot dogs. So that doesn't really help you..

They all have their flaws that keep me from endorsing any of them as a "favorite".

 

I like some of things Jack brings up and he's generally been fun in the booth (not taking too things seriously) but then he goes old school "strikeouts are an overrated out" and "pitching to the score" and he just loses me.

 

Smalley has moments of brilliance. His highlights of Arica's hand drop as he "loads up" pre swing was brilliant and well explained. The issue I have with him is that he can become too verbose. He simply cannot make a concise point.

 

TK is a brilliant mind with a droning voice. If he had ANY inflection or any sense of when to let a game breathe, he'd be my favorite. As it is, too monotone, too much non stop mumbling.

 

All things considered, I enjoy Bert. He's uses too many cliches and can repeat the same stories (and he has a heck of a time with names) but he makes some good observations and has fun in the booth. Hopefully FSN doesn't have to worry about replacing him for a while.
