Overall i'm not sure its an upgrade.

Fuld is the better hitter, but Mastro is more efficient on the bases.

I don't know enough about either's defense to know which one is better in that regard.

Plus Mastro still has an option, I think. Fuld doesn't.

In a second.

Absotively. (And not so coincidentally, based on today's late-inning botch, Hicksie can use a late-inning defensive replacement on occasion).

Defense... Fuld is jaw dropping good. Mastro ain't in the same room... In my opinion.

Offense... Mastro and Fuld... If there is a difference... I'm not aware of it.

When all healthy, there is one spot for Bartlett, Herrmann, Mastroianni or Fuld. Who fits best this year? Who helps the long term more?

If Herrmann means more at bats for Pinto, he might be the way to go.

They can still claim Fuld if he is not traded and then designate him when all are healthy if the timing looks like it will work out.

The 'Stros would be crazy not to get this upgrade on Presley.

Well Fuld has a career OPS+ of 80 to Mastro's 67, so that is quite a bit of an upgrade.

If his defense is as good as you say it is, then this should be a no brainer.

Oakland just DFA'd Sam Fuld. Would he be better than Jason Mastroianni? He can also play all OF positions and has some speed.

I'm not trying to be a condescending jerk, but Jason is not his first name. I wouldn't have mentioned it but I find it funny since he shares his given name with you. Even the same uncommon spelling!

Or is this an inside joke I'm missing?

Yes.

Rochester has Eric Farris and New Britain Cory Wimberly playing CF at the time being and I don't think that Mastro will get claimed if waived.

I caught that name juxtaposition and thought it was slightly clever, summing up our "CF depth" in an ironic sort of way.

Perfect fit for this team. One roster spot left.
No room on the 40-man. Two spots after Parm and Diamond were demoted, filled by Nuñez and Mastroianni.

Fuld is a baseball player... A face full of dirt guy and he can play on my team. Love his D... Couldn't ask for much better... His bat is Ok from time to time but it don't matter... He wouldn't be a long term plan. He'd fit what we need right now.

This organization needs CF bad!!!

Depth Chart:

Hicks

Mastro

Escobar?

Nunez?

Bartlett?

or

Buxton rushed

How can anybody look at that and say "we are good to go"?

If Hicks gets hurt or hits .150... What do they do? Fuld ain't the answer but he'd be great depth. I'd sign Fuld... If I couldn't pick up a Campana or a Bernadina or a Gose or a Bonofacio.

or a Borbon...

Yeah, I thought Nunez had cleared waivers prior to the trade. My bad.

The Twins could really use some organizational depth in CF - is there any excess on the 40 Man that would make it possible to add Fuld without losing Mastro?

I think it makes sense for the Twins to add Fuld for depth, but not at the expense of dropping any more players that can play CF.

Maybe Brooks Raley? I don't see much wiggle room otherwise.

I'd say Bartlett, but I don't he can be removed while on the 15 day DL. Eric Fryer likely wouldn't get claimed and even if he did, is there a difference if Dan Rohlfing is the #4 catcher? You can get these guys on waivers all summer long.

Does anyone think this will happen though? Why do we care about losing Mastro, if this guy is just flat out better than him? How about cutting an older RH RP, and leaving Tonkin up here permanently?

I think it's more about only having two CF options on the 40-man when neither of them has proven to be a MLB caliber player as of yet. Since we don't have a sure thing, maybe it's better to have 3 CF capable players than 4 (5) that can catch.

Apparently the Twins have infielders playing CF in AA and AAA right now. Maybe it's not a big deal, but on the surface it seems like the Twins could use some organizational filler at CF just to have their personnel playing their primary positions again.

That could be Fuld, or possibly a player that is currently unsigned - I think Mastro would possibly make through a DFA situation, and provide depth at AAA if Fuld is added to the 40 (and 25 man) roster.

Hence my "cut a RH RP" statement.......a MLB system should be embarrassed they can't field a legit OF at every level, let alone have backups at every level.

To acquire Fuld, the Twins would need to trade for him - what would be a reasonable player to trade for Fuld? could it be just cash or a player to be named later?

If we're talking RHP, maybe Jared Burton? Or is that an overpayment for a player that is being DFA'd?

What does Oakland need?

Considering he is on waivers, if the Twins claimed him Oakland wouldn't have much bargaining power so it wouldn't take much in a trade as Oakland's only option would be to pull him back. If they did this then they would have to keep him on the 25-man or send him through irrevocable waivers and the Twins could claim him again and get him for nothing.

If he clears waivers they Oakland can outright him to AAA. Then they would have the option of keeping him and can take trade offers from any/all teams that would give them more leverage.

If the Twins don't claim him on waivers, then they have no desire in acquiring him.

Has Fuld been placed on waivers yet? The A's have a few days left before they need to do that, right? Conceivably an interested team could trade for Fuld before he is placed on waivers but still in DFA limbo - for instance, the Astros would be able to claim Fuld before the Twins could, so if the Twins wanted Fuld badly enough they might consider offering a trade prior to the start of the waiver period.

That last scenario is unlikely considering that the Astros already claimed the Twins CF cast off.

You are correct. I jumped the gun. I believe they have 10 days to do something with him after being DFA'd (7 days before they have to put him on waivers).

So tomorrow they must do something (day 3) if he goes on waivers 7 days before day 10? I read Rosenthal's column the Twins and Angles were interested. I'm guessing the Angels would need to make a trade and the A's don't want to deal in their division. He then most likely goes on waivers and the Twins are team number 2 since it goes AL first to get him, right?

Hopefully we see something tomorrow. He could help us in the short term and maybe earn himself a roster spot for a year or two. I'd love having him aboard ... especially now!

No, he has to go on waivers 3 days before day 10. The waiver process is 3 days. He would have to clear waivers (or be claimed) before the 10 day DFA period expires.
