Fun with numbers 2014

As of today:

Santana no longer an MLB SS virgin.

Note that this is more a case of topology than statistics.

Binary numbers are still numbers. His have I/have I not zero will change to a one.

I was thinking more along the lines of Schroedinger's Cat. If the cat's alive to read the box scores in the morning paper, we find out whether Santana's a SS or not. If the cat's dead, there's just no knowing.

The Rockies are hitting 355/401/600 (OPS 1.001) at Coors Field this season

Morneau, despite his hot start, is actually dragging the team down in this regard --only a .987 OPS at Coors! (Still a respectable .879 on the road so far, though -- which is basically his career mark pre-concussion...)

I might buy a lottery ticket based on all of this.....I think the Twins are actually part of an international spy ring, or aliens are controlling them to send us messages. What could the code base be that relies on the numbers 8, 3, 3, and 1?

I don't really know how to interpret this one...there's a little bit of good but probably more bad in this anomaly. Only one A.L. batter hitting over .260 has a higher OBP than slugging percentage, and it's Joe Mauer.

On the morning of May 18th, Brian Dozier is tied for 3rd in the AL with 11 home runs.

He's tied with David Ortiz and Jose Bautista, btw.

My fun fact: This is the latest in a season the Twins have been over .500 since....the last time they were over .500 later in the season.

(DId I do it right?)

Of 50 Major Leaguers to have played at least 40 full innings at 1B so far this season:

Miguel Cabrera ranks 2nd in BRef DWAR with 0.3

Joe Mauer ranks 45th at -0.5

Chris Colabello is 50th at -1.1

So offense aside, how is the trade situation shaping up? Recent Mauer glove gaffes aside...

Mauer>Cola.

Unironic good find.

On the Hicks vs Span vs Revere front, Hicks Bbref dWAR (-0.4) is sandwiched between Revere (-0.5) and Span (-0.3).

There are currently 9 Twins with 100 or more PAs. Joe Mauer has a higher OPS than 3of them: Hicks, Kubel, and the now departed Colabello.

I believe you were looking for the "Not Fun with Numbers" thread and reached this one by mistake. :)

Per Berardino, the Twins have dodged more than $1 BILLION in arms this spring (Buehrle, Sonny Gray, James Shields, Verlander, Scherzer, Kershaw, Josh Beckett, John Lackey, Jon Lester, Iwakuma, Matt Cain, Tim Hudson, Yu Darvish, Kuroda, Sabathia, Lohse).

How about 2014 salary? Even factoring in Gray’s near-minimum salary and counting Buehrle just once, the Twins have dodged $229.5 million worth of elite starting pitching, or an average of $14.34 million per starter.

The Twins are 0-5 when facing a starter w/a ERA in the top 10 in the league.

Well it's hard to face them when most of them are on your team. That's the case right?

Fun one about TD's favorite two debate topics:

Hicks has passed Mauer in OBP (.338 to .336)

What planet do we live on again?

I feel like I'm flogging the Joe Mauer dead horse a bit here, but seriously, is there a health issue that needs some DL time to sort out? Back? Concussion hangover? Mauer's last 100 PA:

19-94, 6/18 BB/K for a .202/.250/.277 slash line

That's beyond unlucky to me.

The 2013 Twins won 66 games.

The 2014 Twins are on pace to win 78 games.

Therefore the 2015 Twins are on pace to win 90 games.

We can count on the 2022 Twins winning 174 games or thereabout.
