Fun with numbers 2014

1884 Jim Whitney (really?)

1883 Jim Whitney (really?)

Fun with 19th century numbers involves remembering that the rules were constantly changing. In 1883 a walk required 8 balls, and in 1884 that number was reduced to 6.  The league K/BB ratio was 2.57 and 2.38 respectively, so Whitney still stands out.

Twins winning pct by month, 2014:

April, .522

May, .448

June, .429

July, .423

August, .379

September (to date), .333

It appears the "rebuild" might need a new blueprint. Or a change in general contractor.

Hmmm...there almost looks like there is a trend there.

Using the word "there" 3 times in one sentence. A new "there" record that I hope stands for a long time.

I'm sure the October and November winning percentages will help bump up the overall numbers.

There there, you there, there is no need to be so certain there. :)

Over the last 30 days, 11 qualified batters have more walks than strikeouts. Two are Twins: Joe Mauer and Brian Dozier. (Victor Martinez is embarassing the league with a 3.6 bb/k ratio in that time; 1.59 bb/k ratio for the entire season!)

After his 11 strikeout, 1 walk day Hughsie still maintains his 11:1 ratio for the season.

He's also within striking distance of allowing fewer walks than home runs allowed, 16 to 15.

Hughsie's 11 K performance today was the first 10+K outing by a Twins starter since Liriano in July, 2012.

Unlike.

Coming into today, Ben Revere had 561 PAs, and 12 walks, one of which was intentional.

12.

In spite of this, Revere has the 5th highest batting average in the NL.

Edit: (fun fact - Morneau has the 2nd highest BA in the NL, Span has the 8th highest)

Every year since 2003, the Twins have had 1 qualified starter finish in the bottom 10 in K%.

The average ERA of the same starter in the year following those bottom-10 seasons? 5.05

This year's winner will be Kyle Gibson.
