Potential Trade Targets(Part 1)

At the time of this writing, the Minnesota Twins are 45-36. This places them seven games behind the MLB-best Cleveland Guardians and a game ahead of a surprisingly competitive Royals team. The AL Central is almost unrecognizable from a year ago, as the Twins were leading the division with a 40-41 record at this time last year. The Twins have seen players like Willi Castro, Jose Miranda, Royce Lewis, Griffin Jax, and Carlos Correa step up, while others like Eduoard Julien, Matt Wallner, Christian

Confirmation

I stated a little while ago about how bad PIT pitch coaching was & how pitchers blossomed after leaving there, Gerrit Cole was one example. I got a rebuttal that Gerrit Cole was always a monster. Here is a statement contrary. "And yet as Cole adhered to the organization’s pitching philosophy, prioritizing efficiency and soft contact, the results were only good, not great. “Not the monster we know today,” said Ron Wolforth, founder of Texas Baseball Ranch. Cole struck out less than a bat

Introducing: Little Papi

Twins fans of a certain age still bear the wounds of Terry Ryan non-tendering David Ortiz prior to the 2003 season prior to his first year of arbitration. Ryan was infamous for this — saving ownership money even when he didn’t have that specific mandate. After the non-tender, Ortiz, of course, went on to become Big Papi. He led the Red Sox to multiple World Series titles. Over his career, he was a 10x All-Star, and won Silver Slugger at DH no fewer than 6 times. He’s in the Hall of Fame, and wen

Paddack To Il, Ronny Henriquez Up

MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that Chris Paddack has been placed on the 15 day Injured List. The corresponding transaction is a call up of Ronny Henriquez. With the Monday off day, Ober can start on Thursday in Arizona on regular rest. Boushley and Dobnak would also be on regular rest to start Thursday, while Varland and Festa both pitched "within the last few days" and would not be available to start Thursday. That obviously doesn't mean they couldn't start Ober on Thursday and bring someone up

Twins Pre-Trade Deadline Needs - Potential In-House Solutions

We are closing in on Trade deadline season, that time when we all can fantasize about trading mid-level prospects for other team's stars. Before we get there though, we need to decide what this team actually needs and evaluate whether there are in-house options that can fill the bill. Trading at the deadline is always high-risk and very expensive in terms of prospects. It always cost more than you think to get another teams solid, mid-level veteran and they're often on expiring contracts making

Is Royce Lewis really THIS good?

Is Royce Lewis for real? If you were to survey every Twins fan around their favorite current player, Royce Lewis would likely be near the top - and for good reason. So far this season, Royce Lewis has been doing very Royce Lewis things - being a spark plug for the offense, hitting a ton of bombs, and generally doing everything right. On a nearly daily basis, he is being recognized on the TV and radio broadcasts for doing things that just aren’t done. For example, he’s been hitting HRs at a

Wrong Side of History, Saints Win Series

Saint Paul, Minnesota – All good things must come to an end. Louie Varland and the Saints were on the wrong end of history for the first time in a few weeks on Sunday. Not only was the win streak snapped, but the Saints allowed the most runs ever in franchise history. The Toledo Mud Hens destroyed the Saints by a score of 20-9 in front of 8,306 fans. The loss dropped the Saints to 38-36 on the season. The Toledo Mud Hens were swinging right out of the gate. On the second pitch of the game,

The Saints are Hot, Sunday Preview

Saint Paul, Minnesota – The Saints are hot! The Saints were founded in 1993 and have never had an eleven-game single season win streak. That changed on Saturday June 22, 2024. The Saints held off the Toledo Mud Hens for a 9-7 victory, which was the teams eleventh straight win! The streak started on Tuesday June 11th. The Saints started a 6-game series in Louisville. The Saints topped the Louisville Bats by a score of 3-2 in game one. Little did anyone know the run that would come! The high

Delusions of Grandeur

Face it folks:  your 2024 Minnesota Twins are not good. As of the time of this writing, they are 17-2 vs CHW, COL, LAA, OAK.  These are 4 of the 5 worst teams in baseball.  They are 25-33 against everyone else. In MLB, they are 10th in runs scored, but 22nd in ERA. Thank you ownership for taking a WS contending team and intentionally making them worse. Thank you for taking the TV money and not reinvesting it back in the team. Thank you for not allowing the FO to go out and getting a

Here are 6 questions for everyone in the Twins Daily community!

Hey, I hope everyone is enjoying the Twins' 9-2 beatdown of the Sacramento A's of Las Vegas by Way of Oakland (even though it's the 5th, but you can join in the official TD Game Thread), but a few questions for everyone as we look ahead to the 2nd half of the season and beyond... 1. Which Twins will represent the AL in the All-Star Game at Globe Life Field next month? 2. Will there be better Pablo (Lopez) Days for number 49 in the 2nd half? (I say yes!) 3. Will Byron Buxton return

Thoughts on every team's City Connect looks - a (slightly snarky) deep dive

Last Friday, the Twins were the last team to unveil their City Connect jerseys. You’ve probably seen them by now - at least if you are able to watch games on TV. The Ripple Effect draws inspiration from the state’s 10,000 lakes and the loon. The new look has been polarizing, to say the least, as most City Connect offerings have been. I for one am a fan, as I get some serious Fallout Vault Dweller vibes from the bright blue and yellow combination. My only suggestion would be to have white pants t

Minor League Legends

Last night’s game at Rickwood reminded of two impactful Twin minor leaguers that never got their chance in the majors.  Chuck Weatherspoon and Ollie Brantley were cited by Rod Carew in his book as being a great help getting through the minors. Both started out in the negro leagues in the 50s. Brantley played for the Memphis Red Sox and Weatherspoon played for the Twin Cities Colored Giants. Both were in the Twins system for years playing and mentoring several future Twins including Rod Care

Farmer Kepler out; Wallner Lee in

I am not sure if there is anything serious with the Kepler injury, but now is the time to make a move. The Twins schedule has them playing NOBODY over .500 until after the Allstar break!! Now is the time to call up Wallner and Lee, let them continue their string recent offensive surges against AAAA competition to build confidence for the second half. DFA Farmer, there really is ZERO reason he is still on this club!!  I have hear the veteran presence in clubhouse thing, but we still hav

Jhoan Duran's pitching effectiveness - a deep dive

A month ago, Cody Christie wrote a great article around Jhoan Duran’s decreased velocity, and how that has impacted his pitch mix changes. A couple findings from that article were that: His velocity is down roughly 1.2 MPH on every pitch compared to 2023, through mid-May. He’s been throwing his heater much less, and relying on his off-speed offerings more. At that time, he had decreased his fastball usage from 45% last year, to 34.3% this year through mid-May. Well, this trend

Saints Continue Winning Streak, 8-7 over Mud Hens, Lee Career Best Game

Saint Paul, Minnesota – Winning teams find ways to win and losing teams find ways to lose. The Saint Paul Saints demonstrated they were a winning team on Wednesday afternoon. The Saints topped the Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers) 8-7 in front of 7,248 fans at CHS Field. The Saints improved to 35-35 on the season and 11-5 in the month of June. Ronny Henriquez made his first start of the season on Wednesday afternoon. Henriquez came to the Twins organization in a trade with the Texas Rangers

Who Says No To The Athletic's Proposed Twins Trade For Alonso - I DO!

The Athletic just published an article about "FIve Trades I'd Like To See" before the MLB trade deadline. One of them involved the Twins trading for Pete Alonso: Twins get: Pete Alonso Mets get: Alex Kirilloff, David Festa, Luke Keaschall I for one would be very irritated if the Twins made this trade. Let's start with what we get. Pete Alonso is a great hitter and would be a great fit in the middle of our lineup for the next two or three months. After that, he is going to a high r

The Worst Division in Baseball

Generally speaking, I traditionally buy-in to the theory that the AL Central is historically, and remains the worst division in baseball. The typical format we centralites live by is 3-teams who are so incredibly mediocre (often fighting for an 87-win division title), then two teams who routinely battle for the crown of worst team in baseball. Miraculously, that is not the case in 2024.  This year, though we still have a team fighting for the worst team in baseball (Sorry ChiSox), we have s

The guys the Twins drafted but didn't sign - a deep dive

We are now less than a month from the Rule-4 draft. National and local writers have started publishing deep-dives of mock drafts, player profiles, and general prognostication. This article is not that. Instead, we will be doing a deep-dive into drafts past. The Twins, like any pro baseball team, have had their share of swings and misses in the draft. As fans, we feel great about guys like Royce Lewis, Brooks Lee, and Walker Jenkins. At the same time, we lament guys like Keoni Cavaco, Aaron

I Kind of Miss 0-18

The following is an excerpt from the 2024 Gregg Media Guide, a 35-page lighthearted collection of essays, player profiles, a prospect list, and more that I penned prior to the 2024 season. The opening essay was the most serious piece of writing, as it's something that I've thought a lot about over the last year, even if it might not make sense to everyone. I've decided to post it here, in case anyone else finds it interesting. ~~~~ I’m being serious. I kind of miss 0-18. If you are dee

Pittsburgh Road Trip Journal

The Twins had not played a series in Pittsburgh that fans could attend since April of 2018, with the last series the team played at PNC Park being a fanless two game series during the COVID-shortened 2020 season. The scheduling of this series on a weekend in early June at one of the best ballparks in the country allowed the opportunity for many Twins fans, this one included, to watch their team get shutout in a new and exciting destination! My wife Sophie joined me on this trip and she got

D*** Yankees! Why do they have MN's Number?

Is it that the Twins' players are psyched out? At least not in the beginning. This has been going on for decades w/o the players being aware of. So what is it? IMO NYY organization is ruthless. They know the advantage of owning a team especially one who they'll probably face in the post season. I imagine that they really psych up their players & fanbase before they face the Twins, to go all out to hold advantage over us. After that it affects Twins fans & then the players. Last season we

A deep dive into umpire accuracy and our standings

Every sports fan is likely to believe the umps are biased against their team, but there have been several games lately that make it seem like the fates are working against the Twins. Let's look at some examples. In last night's game against the Pirates, assistant hitting coach Derek Shomon was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. As it turns out, he was right to be frustrated, as HP ump Paul Clemons called a pitch to Correa a strike when it was a ball. Later in the inning, with bases load
