I am probably among the minority, but I can see good days ahead for the Twins. But for guys my age those days better be soon. I expect most are correct and this is the result of their not getting the number they wanted. Based on what I read here several days ago the debt isn't outside debt as stated above, rather debt related to their investment in Target Field when built and ongoing enhancements to the ballpark. Expect they also took a big hit during the pandemic. But it sure seems that debt was the issue that muddied the waters when trying to sell. Will be interesting to see who these two investor groups are. Have seen mention that the Cambria family may have been interested. Also curious if one of the groups could include several former Twins? If so, hopefully they will be allowed to provide input into the makeup of the team. The FO recently set the team up for a rebuild. Considering what was given up, hopefully most of the key players brought in will be as good as expected. The starting rotation will be strong next spring. And that's a great starting point. Hopefully, the financial re-set will enable them to begin building around that strength and the Twins will be competitive....soon!

Big night on the hill for Twins lefties tonight. Prielipp and Rojas at AA and AAA. Continue to be impressed from what I am seeing from Tait. The kid is still 18 and playing at High-A with some pop in his bat. Expect he needs a lot of work in most aspects of his game, but sure looks like he could be special.

Interesting article, Cody, and great analysis After all the deadline moves, I was thinking about starters for 2026. The Twins currently have a staff headed by three frontline starters, Lopez, Ryan and Ober. Next are three starters who all have starting experience beginning last year, SWR, Festa and Matthews. Add three top arms from deadline moves Abel, Bradley and Rojas who all are close. That gives the Twins nine potential starters in 2026. Of the three currently in the rotation, I have been thinking Zebby would be an ideal candidate for a move to the pen. So many similarities to Varland that I really could see him as the Twins closer by some time next year and pitching as well as Louie was before the trade. As to who is in the 2026 pen, expect one or more of the above will likely be there along with candidates like Ohl and Adams. I would like to throw one more name into the mix, Mike Canterino. The Twins signed him to a two-year minor league contract which gives him time to rehab this year and return to the mound in 2026. Unlikely he would be available out of spring training, but he sure could become an option by say next year's trade deadline. His days of starting are likely behind him, but when pitching he was special and could be another strong candidate for a late inning role.

I don't know what type of power Houston will, or will not develop. There is a chance, and in his case a real chance, that he could become a star player even if he doesn't develop that power. Shortstop is one of, if not the most important position defensively on the field. If he is as good with his glove as they say, he could be that special player who becomes a star with an average bat or good bat with minimal power. Was a long time ago, but I don't remember Ozzie Smith hitting many home runs. Yet he was a star, a real star. Is he in the Hall, or didn't he make it? Anyway, a shortstop who is one of the league's best doesn't have to hit all that much to be invaluable to any team. But then I value defense and speed much more than a lot of folks.

Thanks for the report, Seth. And how bout them Twins? See that DeBarge got two steals last night. What is it, four more for the organizational record? What I found more interesting was the Winokur got his 22nd. Didn't realize he had that type of speed? Always interested in Carpenter's starts. Wasn't his best, but 4 hits, a walk, 5 K's and one earned run in 4 innings is solid. Enjoy your weekend!!

Don't often disagree Dman. But my frustration is with everyone talking about power, power, power. I don't disagree that power isn't important. It is. And much of what you say above is true. But there is more to winning games than just power. Let's not write off players just because they aren't a power guy. A winning team needs some of both. Otherwise you have a team of Wallner like players. It wasn't long ago that he had something like 12 home runs and what was it, 19 rbi? Yes power is important. And some fast players get a lot of doubles because they stretch that single. Or they get a single and steal second. Just think about DeBarge. How many of his singles became doubles one or two pitches later? Yes, power is important. But it isn't the only thing. At least for me.

Why does everyone have to talk about power, or lack thereof, for most players. The Twins just drafted what was reported to be the best defensive shortstop in the draft. He begins play in A-ball and proceeds to hit well over .300 average. Add he also has reasonable speed. The Twins should be ecstatic if that is who he would be when he reaches the majors. I know I sure would. Question. Does steal #57 give DeBarge the most steals of any Twins minor leaguer, ever? And there is what, about a month of season remaining?

Is it possible this team is playing better since the deadline than before? I don't think Detroit is all that good. Granted we didn't face Skubal, but that team sure didn't look like a team who could do anything in the playoffs. Not saying that I expect this team to go on a run and make the playoffs, like Detroit did last year. But the last few games were a lot of fun to watch. Heck, the two losses in Cleveland were one run games that could have gone the Twins way with a couple small changes. If Buxton is back in a few days and playing like he did before the injury. That's one more bat that can make a difference. And love the way some of these new guys are running.

5 Reasons to Keep Watching the Twins
rdehring replied to Alex Boxwell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Speaking of Keaschall, does he remind anyone else of Bobby Witt. His size, build, hair, speed, clutch hitting all reminds me of someone I consider one of the top five players in the game. Will he ever be close to as good as Witt, probably not. But who knows?- 48 replies

Add me to those with overflowing excitement regarding Jenkins and Culpepper. Also see that Mendez had another nice night as well. Great seeing the start Houston is having with his bat considering he is a glove first guy. Have been pleased with how Lee looks at shortstop but would love to see a decade of one of the best in the game at short for the Twins.

The Minnesota Twins Have Failed Byron Buxton
rdehring replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thought this comment is another time for me to explain my use of the smiling guy. I really don't know what that is intended to mean. In my case, I use it when I get a good smile from the comment. Thanks jm for giving me that smile this morning. -
After missing almost all of the first two months of the season, it was reasonable to expect Jenkins to have a slow start when he returned. And that he did. But he sure has been the player we all hoped for the last month plus. Including that start, his average went above .300 yesterday with a +.400 OBP and +.900 OPS. Those are fantastic results which I hope will continue to climb as the season winds down. As great as Jenkins has been, Culpepper has been getting even better results since moving up to Wichita. Amazing season. Also interesting, at least to me, that he played third base yesterday.

Minnesota Twins Minor League Hitters of the Month – July
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Understand your position Doc. Expect the Twins will give him a lot of at bats the next month. And if he continues as is, hopefully, his playing time will lessen and he will be gone come winter. At least that's what I think the front office should be considering. What I would be doing is leaving him in St. Paul before moving on come December. Would much rather see Martin at second when Buxton returns this week. Hopefully, Martin won't be on the bench with Julien at second every night.- 13 replies

Interesting outlook on this week, Nick. I want to say thanks, but am too disappointed. I believe that signing Correa to the long-term deal was a mistake because no team can have over a quarter of their payroll going to one player. When his performance deteriorated, the Twins chances of being competitive went with it. Getting out of that contract was a huge win, in my opinion. As others have said, the thing I don't understand was getting rid of the relievers at the deadline. Varland can't be about money. Had they kept Jax, Varland and Stewart they would still have a very good bullpen. With that pen backing up Pablo, Ryan, Ober and a couple kids the Twins would be in the game nearly every night. So I don't know why they traded Varland and Jax. The only answer that makes any sense to me is that they truly believe the pitchers they got back would make the team better a year or two from now. Sure hope they are right. As for Stewart, that trade just doesn't make any sense. Last night might have been a different result had they still had Jax, Varland and Stewart in the pen. Well those three and Julien not playing second. And thanks, Nick, for the kind words about Terry Ryan. Has hurt for too long seeing all the hits he took here and elsewhere over the past years.

Liked everything about Carpenter when the Twins signed the eleventh round pick a year ago. That he was from Madison College (formerly Madison Tech from my days in Mad Town) made it a bit more special. Great start last night. Expect we will see more over the coming weeks. With Carpenter, Hill, Prielipp and a couple guys traded for on Thursday, maybe the Twins will have a leftie in their rotation before long. Or two? Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was that DeBarge had two singles and NO stolen bases. Great seeing Diaw have a big first game back. With he and the kid they got from the Phillies maybe catcher is no longer the biggest hole in the organization. Still no idea who will be Jeffers backup next year, but 2027 and beyond should be in good hands. As for negatives, Prielipp didn't have his best start. Also hope we won't see many more nights when Culpepper and Jenkins go a combined 0-8.

Although this isn't a minor league question, Seth, it is related. Have been checking the Twins site to see who is playing tonight in Cleveland. As of 2:04 EST they still have only 9 position players on the roster along with 8 pitchers. I guess they can field a team, but am anxious to see who is getting recalled. On the other hand, they also need to be moving a lot of players up throughout the organization to field teams in all four leagues. Certainly hoped Falvey took today's ticket expense into his savings calcuations yesterday, cause they are gonna be big. Although I suppose they could rent a small bus in Toledo and have 8-10 guys make the two hour trip to Cleveland.

Continue to be impressed by Culpepper, who seems to be getting better every week. Like how Jenkins has gotten hot. Believe his slow start was to be expected after having missed, was it two months or longer? Both seem to be legitimate prospects who could become stars beginning some-time next year. Trust the Twins goal for the rest of this season should be a top three draft slot next summer. Hopefully, they will be better at that then they have been competing for a playoff spot the past four months. With what seems like their entire bullpen now pitching elsewhere, will some of these starters who are close be pitching out of the Twins pen the next couple months? Will Raya be one of them? Do they view Zebby Matthews as a future closer?

Huge move that should enable the Twins to begin getting better beginning next year. Have believed for some time that Correa's salary combined with his rapidly declining level of play was what was killing the Twins. Hopefully this will clear the way for any pending sale and a new owner will bring exciting baseball back to those of us who have gone without for toooooo long.
-
Thanks for the information, Matt, about stolen base records for the organization. Gotta believe DeBarge is going to blow past Granite's 56 and Knoblach's 62. Hopefully this kid can hit enough to make it those next three steps. Also remain hopeful that the organization will have made changes by the time he gets here to both play him and let him run when he is on base. I see Culpepper has some speed as does Jenkins. If this group can get together and Buxton is still here in say two or three years, the Twins could again be exciting to watch.

I think they got two top 100 prospects for Duran, correct? If so, can't complain too much. But with all trades, time will tell how they did. Unfortunately, as several mentioned above I would have liked to see them get a catcher closer to helping the team. Perhaps by next year. Now if this kid ends up being the next Sal Perez and joins the Twins as a 20-year old by mid 2027, all would be good. And that timeline could be realistic...begin next spring in Hi-A, move up to AA by June with a September move to AAA. Another month or two in 2027 at St. Paul and he could move over to Target Field. Is that optimistic? Yes. If this kid is a top 50 guy and plays/develops like it, could happen.
