Interesting outlook on this week, Nick. I want to say thanks, but am too disappointed. I believe that signing Correa to the long-term deal was a mistake because no team can have over a quarter of their payroll going to one player. When his performance deteriorated, the Twins chances of being competitive went with it. Getting out of that contract was a huge win, in my opinion. As others have said, the thing I don't understand was getting rid of the relievers at the deadline. Varland can't be about money. Had they kept Jax, Varland and Stewart they would still have a very good bullpen. With that pen backing up Pablo, Ryan, Ober and a couple kids the Twins would be in the game nearly every night. So I don't know why they traded Varland and Jax. The only answer that makes any sense to me is that they truly believe the pitchers they got back would make the team better a year or two from now. Sure hope they are right. As for Stewart, that trade just doesn't make any sense. Last night might have been a different result had they still had Jax, Varland and Stewart in the pen. Well those three and Julien not playing second. And thanks, Nick, for the kind words about Terry Ryan. Has hurt for too long seeing all the hits he took here and elsewhere over the past years.

Liked everything about Carpenter when the Twins signed the eleventh round pick a year ago. That he was from Madison College (formerly Madison Tech from my days in Mad Town) made it a bit more special. Great start last night. Expect we will see more over the coming weeks. With Carpenter, Hill, Prielipp and a couple guys traded for on Thursday, maybe the Twins will have a leftie in their rotation before long. Or two? Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was that DeBarge had two singles and NO stolen bases. Great seeing Diaw have a big first game back. With he and the kid they got from the Phillies maybe catcher is no longer the biggest hole in the organization. Still no idea who will be Jeffers backup next year, but 2027 and beyond should be in good hands. As for negatives, Prielipp didn't have his best start. Also hope we won't see many more nights when Culpepper and Jenkins go a combined 0-8.

Although this isn't a minor league question, Seth, it is related. Have been checking the Twins site to see who is playing tonight in Cleveland. As of 2:04 EST they still have only 9 position players on the roster along with 8 pitchers. I guess they can field a team, but am anxious to see who is getting recalled. On the other hand, they also need to be moving a lot of players up throughout the organization to field teams in all four leagues. Certainly hoped Falvey took today's ticket expense into his savings calcuations yesterday, cause they are gonna be big. Although I suppose they could rent a small bus in Toledo and have 8-10 guys make the two hour trip to Cleveland.

Continue to be impressed by Culpepper, who seems to be getting better every week. Like how Jenkins has gotten hot. Believe his slow start was to be expected after having missed, was it two months or longer? Both seem to be legitimate prospects who could become stars beginning some-time next year. Trust the Twins goal for the rest of this season should be a top three draft slot next summer. Hopefully, they will be better at that then they have been competing for a playoff spot the past four months. With what seems like their entire bullpen now pitching elsewhere, will some of these starters who are close be pitching out of the Twins pen the next couple months? Will Raya be one of them? Do they view Zebby Matthews as a future closer?

Huge move that should enable the Twins to begin getting better beginning next year. Have believed for some time that Correa's salary combined with his rapidly declining level of play was what was killing the Twins. Hopefully this will clear the way for any pending sale and a new owner will bring exciting baseball back to those of us who have gone without for toooooo long.

Thanks for the information, Matt, about stolen base records for the organization. Gotta believe DeBarge is going to blow past Granite's 56 and Knoblach's 62. Hopefully this kid can hit enough to make it those next three steps. Also remain hopeful that the organization will have made changes by the time he gets here to both play him and let him run when he is on base. I see Culpepper has some speed as does Jenkins. If this group can get together and Buxton is still here in say two or three years, the Twins could again be exciting to watch.

I think they got two top 100 prospects for Duran, correct? If so, can't complain too much. But with all trades, time will tell how they did. Unfortunately, as several mentioned above I would have liked to see them get a catcher closer to helping the team. Perhaps by next year. Now if this kid ends up being the next Sal Perez and joins the Twins as a 20-year old by mid 2027, all would be good. And that timeline could be realistic...begin next spring in Hi-A, move up to AA by June with a September move to AAA. Another month or two in 2027 at St. Paul and he could move over to Target Field. Is that optimistic? Yes. If this kid is a top 50 guy and plays/develops like it, could happen.

Curious where this Correa talk is coming from. Doesn't Houston have a young stud who replaced Correa when he signed with the Twins? If they could get out from that huge contract, they could be a much better overall team. At least in my opinion.

Has been so enjoyable watching Buxton this year. He gives 100% on everything he does. That is perhaps the main reason for most of his injuries over the years. Let's hope this isn't serious and he is back out in center field next Wednesday.

Great article, Matt. Agree with everything you said. Expect the return for Duran will be a bit better than Jax. If that is the case, I say make the trade. But I am hopeful that they only trade one, not both. Also wouldn't be surprised if they move Coloumbe. In addition to a higher salary over the next couple years, I also suspect that Duran will be the harder of the two to extend between now and the end of 2027. And the Twins bullpen should be fine with Jax, Varland and Stewart as their late inning guys. And who knows, maybe Canterino will finally get healthy next year and be that fourth guy at the end of games.

Louis Varland Has Got That Closer In Him
rdehring replied to Peter Labuza's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting subject. Although there remains a chance they trade Coloumbe, I don't see them trading more than one of Duran, Jax or Stewart. Of that trio, I see Duran as the most desirable. Why? He will likely be the most expensive over the next two years, the most difficult to extend, and he should bring the biggest return. A much better return than Stewart and also a better return than Jax. Only see Duran being traded, or Jax for that matter, if they get an absolute obscene return. Expect they are having discussions with one or more teams and the inquiring G.M. is both shocked and offended by the ask. Doesn't mean some team doesn't pony up come Thursday. -
Week in Review: Lewis Awakens, Deadline Decisions Loom
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Certainly didn't want to put another burr under your saddle today, Nick. If you check what I said it was "if" they can get the "right" offer. Am in total agreement with your position that getting that offer is unlikely. And other than commenting on my hope that they get some young catchers, I am not qualified to speculate what they should be getting. With that said, I am happy they got a good catching prospect for Paddack. Unfortunately, he is to far away from playing for the Twins to be a candidate for that second catchers spot next year.- 90 replies

Week in Review: Lewis Awakens, Deadline Decisions Loom
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting article, Nick. And very interesting discussion by everyone here. I was so hopeful earlier this season for another year of exciting baseball. After all, guys my age don't have a lot of seasons left to enjoy. So I watched the first couple innings yesterday, then asked my wife if she wanted to get started on that puzzle we bought on Saturday. So for me, the Twins have lost me for another year. Want to comment on Brooks Lee. Will agree with the above comments that he is slow. That got my attention as I love the way a lot of smaller market teams play that have a ton of speed. But I want to defend Lee's defense a bit. I'm not saying his D has been good. But it seems since the day he arrived in Minnesota he has been playing three different positions. Considering his background, I believe if the Twins let him play one position for an extended period he would eventually be good defensively at said position. Also believe he was rushed to the Twins last year and the rest of the year at St. Paul to work on his hitting and ONE defensive position would help. Must disagree, however, with your comment on trading one of Larnach or Wallner. Heck, if they got the right offer I would trade both of them. Neither is good defensively and both are slow. On the other hand, will be disappointed if Bader gets traded. Would like to see him re-signed at year's end as their fourth outfielder for the next couple years.- 90 replies

Interesting way of looking at it, Cody. Not certain I understand your logic. Are you saying that the Twins, or any non-competitive team should always trade their best young players when they have high value? Curious how they would ever get better by doing that? You also stated there is "too much talent on this roster." Saw a quote from Falvey in this morning's Strib. Said something along the lines that he still believes this is a talented team. If there is so much talent why are they playing horse crap baseball? Other than Buxton, Ryan and a couple relievers, no one is really playing all that well. So which is it? Is there really not all that much talent? Or the talent is there and they aren't playing well? I don't know if this team is talented or not. Thought they were earlier this year, but not sure today. If they are, then there are some real management/coaching problems. If they aren't, then the FO is responsible for not getting the best team they can on the field. What I do know is that it is difficult to win with a team that is both slow and poor defensively. I also know it is difficult to watch said team.

Got a question, Seth. And thanks for the report. Now can you get the FCL Twins to win two straight? There seems to be a real chance that the Twins will trade one, or even two relievers over the next few days. Should that happen, who will replace them in the Twins pen? Are there any good relievers left at St. Paul? Is there someone down at Wichita who might skip a level and come up? Or is there a starter at Wichita, or St. Paul, who could come up for the last two months of the season? Saw someone mention Prielipp above. Is that probable? Or even realistic?

Remain hopeful there is some GM out there who would take on all or almost all of that contract. Especially if the return is minimal, say a Hi-A prospect around #30 for some club. Is it three years remaining? Plus, doesn't it begin getting a little smaller over the final two or three years? And yes, I understand Carlos will have to agree to a trade.

Thanks for a great report, Seth. And congrats to the FCL Twins who are headed the the championship series. Liked that Keaschall was at second base. Also huge that he stole two bases last night. Heard somewhere that because he was out so long he will definitely take the full 20 days on his rehab stint. Also somewhat surprised when I looked at the box score that Martin is hitting .330 something. Probably does make sense to bring him back should they move Castro this week. Also interesting that Julien is punishing the ball of late. Still don't see his fit with this team. So makes sense that they move him if they can get something in return. At least makes sense to me. Loved last night's start by Prielipp. Seems like he is checking all the boxes to join the Twins by early next summer. Remain hopeful that he will join Zebby as the next young starter to make an impact for this team.

Many of us want to see the Twins make changes so they can make a run in the playoffs. And those of my age need that change soon! I am not close to or smart enough to know the answers. I just know that what they have been doing for the past however many years ain't working. So that means they must change what they are doing. Falvey is in charge. Can he change and make the moves over the next five days and next winter? If he can, fine. If he can't or won't, then he must go. One of those changes has to be Rocco. At least in my opinion. Why? Anyone who has watched this team over the last week, months and year knows why. But the biggest change must come from the players. Some of it has to be a change of attitude. Some has to be talent. Unfortunately, one thing won't change and that is the market the Twins are in. There are a handful of teams that have the revenue to have obscene payrolls. The Twins aren't one of them. Fortunately, no one in their division will outspend them. Like their division competition, they cannot commit a quarter of their payroll to one player. Especially when that player isn't playing at an all-star level. So when Mr. Falvey continues planning for 2026 and beyond, he must include figuring out how to move C4 and 100% of his salary. The player(s) they get in return aren't important. What is important is freeing up $35M of annual payroll. Hopefully, there will be a few moves over the coming days that will improve the team in 2026 and 2027. If not, we can only hope someone will actually buy the team and clean house.

Like the idea of keeping Jax, Duran and Varland. Then re-sign Coloumbe for another year and the bullpen is set for the next few years. That would make Stewart available for a decent return. With two more years of control, can they get some teams #6-#10 prospect? Not a MLB top 100 prospect, but maybe somewhere in the #200-#300 range?
