Add me to Cory above as being an optimist. Heck, guys my age will be glad to be around for the next couple World Series. Everything you said Cody is right on. Although unlikely, heck very unlikely, the Twins could be in the World Series next fall. Truth is should things break right any of 30 teams could be. What would it take for the Twins? They keep their three top starters who all stay healthy and pitch like they are capable of doing. Buxton has another healthy year and performs like 2025. Royce Lewis has a good off-season, is healthy the entire year and becomes the player we all expected when drafted. You know, someone like Derek Jeter. Luke Keaschall continues hitting like this past summer and works on his D at second base so he is a bit above average in the field. Trevor Larnach is traded along with a prospect for a solid late inning reliever, with the Twins signing one good and one solid bullpen arms. Walker Jenkins joins the club in early May and becomes the 2026 Rookie of the Year. Toss in a solid season from SWR and one of the young arms being a solid #5 along with a couple other minor moves and all could be good for the Twins. Very Good. As I said at the beginning, is this likely? No, but us old guys can dream, can't we?

How Low Could the Minnesota Twins' Payroll Go?
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Another day, another article talking about what the Twins payroll is going to be. I have a suggestion, Cody. Why don't we wait and see what it actually is? As for me, I am more concerned with what they do with whatever payroll they spend, rather than how much they spend. And if it is a total teardown, I will enjoy watching all those young kids we have followed the past few years playing at Target Field. With a bit of luck and some smart decisions, maybe they will become something real good in a couple years. And yes, I will agree with most of you reading that last sentence that smart decisions aren't a given.- 63 replies

Road to a Rebound: Trevor Larnach
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Have liked Larnach since he arrived. Like most, continue to be disappointed with his play. With so many impressive corner outfielders close, have to believe the Twins plans include moving on from both Larnach and Wallner. Only question is when and what they get in return, if anything. -
What a fantastic comment TopGunn, thanks. Have been on the road the past couple days so am late looking at this. What a wonderful conversation. Hopefully, someone in the front office is reading this. Will begin with a question for those talking about trading him next summer or next winter. Until there is a settlement on a new CBA, next winter very likely doesn't exist. So for me, that makes a move this winter more important if trading Ryan is near the top of their off-season plan. That's assuming they have a plan. And if there is no baseball in 2027, they really have him for only one more year. Not two. We read nearly every day in some article here and elsewhere about the Pohlad's being cheap. But that's not their biggest problem. At least in my opinion. Their biggest problem for me is not holding Falvey and the front office accountable. Why do I say that? In part because too many of their trades have returned pitchers who have been injured when acquired. It began at the deadline several years back when they got that Giants reliever who pitched what, a couple innings? Then there was Mahle from Cincinnati. And that was followed by the Polanco trade with another starter who never pitched an inning. Fool the front office once, ok. But three times in about as many years in baseball is a big K. While reading the above comments I also began thinking about their catching situation. They have a need for a backup catcher in 2026. Several comments suggest part of a Ryan trade should return a big league ready catcher. Got me wondering why because they have Tait? But Tait is one to two years away and in better fits the plan as a Jeffers replacement. So getting a catcher this off-season does make sense. A lot of sense, although it doesn't have to be part of a Ryan trade. Could also be the return for say Larnach, or Larnach plus one of our catching prospects not named Tiat or Jiminez.

Arbitrary Thoughts: Bailey Ober
rdehring replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In 2023/2024 he was as good as any of their starters. Seems he has a real clunker early in the year that distorts his overall numbers. But it wasn't that long ago I was seeing articles that all three of the main Twins starters, Lopez, Ryan and Ober, were pitchers who could be in the Cy Young conversation. What happened in 2025 was the result of his injury, at least in my opinion. The Twins probably should have shut him down earlier for a month, or longer, so he could heal. Had they done that I expect we wouldn't be having this discussion. As for the future, should the Twins intend to compete in 2026 they will need their three top starters. And that includes Ober. Should they catch lightening in a bottle with a couple of their young arms, they could move one of them in July.- 28 replies

Arbitrary Thoughts: Royce Lewis
rdehring replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Where would the Twins have been the past couple of years if Lewis had been the player he could have been? Or is that should have been? As much as we all are anywhere from disappointed to plain out p..... off about the Twins, had Lewis been an all-star these past few years everything might have been so different. Agree there is no way the Twins don't offer arbitration. So the Twins and us fans will hope/pray that he has a healthy off-season and returns next spring as the player he was destined to be. Alhough many of us have already punted on 2026, Lewis playing in next year's all-star game could change those expectations, a lot. -
Found it interesting that Mendez' home run came off a lefty. Also liked him striking out only once in 15 PA. Thanks for the report. Had forgotten that the AFL was already under way.

Great article, Nick. Also, excellent comments from the TD faithful. Thanks to all. The Twins have three strengths, starting pitchers, top corner outfield prospects who are close, and Byron Buxton. I will join Nick in that I expect Ryan to be dealt, and hope Lopez is not. Their starting pitching depth should enable them to still have a very good starting rotation with a couple more down at AAA for depth should Ryan be traded. So, the question becomes what do the Twins get in return for Ryan? The Twins greatest weakness heading into the winter is their bullpen. Thus, I believe part of the return must be a young reliever who is capable of being a late inning stalwart. You know, someone like Louis Varland. Add a top pitching prospect who isn't too far away and a third piece who also is a very good prospect and I could see a Ryan trade helping the Twins in both 2026 and beyond. And as long as we all are dreaming, maybe Toronto would be interested in Ryan and Louie could come home!

Would like any of this trio to become the Twins next manager. How can you not like Lombard, who is a 'hard ass' who can both connect with players AND hold them accountable. Reminds me of a coach in another sport from back in my younger days. Except he had an 'i' at the end of his name.

Arbitrary Thoughts: OF Trevor Larnach
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My guess would be that they tender him. With that said, I don't see him being on the team come opening day as he should have some value to another team. Will he bring back a top prospect, probably not. But maybe they can get a decent prospect back should he be a bit further away, say A-ball. -
Everyone keeps thinking the Pohlads are still in the banking business. They haven't been for some time. So yes, they are borrowing money from whatever banks they deal with. We also don't know how said banks consider a baseball team as a credit risk. Or the Pohlad's for that matter. With interest rates being very high for the past several years, yes, an interest rate approaching 10% could be possible. But I showed a range, roughly 6% to 10% as none of us know that the actual rate is. And paying 10% or above is not 'money laundering.' I am very much aware of the rates one of the best restaurant companies in America is paying on their loans, and that's over 10%. And I am somewhat disappointed how you jumped on my comment, which was intended to point out that a good chunk of the loss would go away when/if the debt was paid off by the new investors, by not considering that I used a wide range of interest rates in my $30M to $50M guess.

Perhaps the most important fact regarding this happening, Nick, is that there is a high likelihood that baseball will not be played in much of 2027, if at all. So tearing this down and setting the team up for success in 2028 and beyond kind of makes sense. As stated above I see Larnach as the most likely to be moved. Agree with all your expectations, Nick, with the exception that Buxton just may stick with the team thru this mess. Hopefully, the Twins will get some very good young talent back from these deals. As for this year's selloff, contrary to a lot of the comments of late we won't know for another year or two how good the returns actually were. Personally, I am hopeful.

You have to take the interest on that debt into consideration, DJL. Assuming it is actually $500M, the interest would be in the +$30M to <$50M range. So its possible nearly half of the loss would be wiped out by retiring the debt, which allegedly will be done by bringing in the two partners.

Gotta agree, Doc. All of the best prospects who are close are corner outfielders. For that reason, I see Larnach as a definite trade with Wallner also a possibility. Personally, I would be ok with both leaving. That's assuming they get something reasonable back, most likely prospects at Hi-A or AA.

Thought today was a good day for my occasional disclaimer. My use of the laughing face isn't my saying ha ha or laughing at the comment. I use it when I read a comment and get a good smile. Adding the smiley face is my way of saying thanks for bringing that smile to me.

2025 Twins Daily Most Improved Player
rdehring replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting. My preference would be Martin but can't argue with your report. Any comment about Varland reminds us of the one trade that really hurt. At least it does for me. Have to believe the FO hadn't considered trading Varland when Toronto made an offer they couldn't refuse. Hopefully, they know enough about the Roden and Rojas and they end up being right. I guess time will tell.- 31 replies

Finished reading this piece, John, and was flat out disappointed. Was going to comment, but that was before reading Rufus' comment above. Fantastic response, Rufus. Also appreciated Nashville's comment and others like DJL who referred to the idea that what you do with said $$$ is as important as how many dollars a team spends.

Thanks for posting this, Cody. There actually were two separate articles in this morning's Strib. What may be most interesting is that both were in the Business section and written by Business reporters. Thought both articles brought us more insight into what has been happening the past year. Also believe they deliver some hope that things may be better sooner than many fear. At least that was my take on it.

2025 Twins Daily Rookie Of The Year
rdehring replied to Eric Blonigen's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As for the above comments about keeping him away from the Twins hitting coaches. I remain hopeful that the Twins will have an entire new coaching staff next year. Personally, would like to see Watkins return, just not as third base coach. -

Had an interesting thought while reading the comments. Maybe someone at TD could do a piece about it. Was wondering what percentage of players chosen in the first round actually make it. And maybe even break that down to separate discussions of high school kids or college 21 year-old picks. Would think that making it also needs some examination. Maybe broken down to being in the major leagues more than 2 or 3 years, being a starter and a third classification could be being chosen as an all-star. When talking about Twins picks never making it, have a feeling that is not all that uncommon. Especially when choosing high school kids. Gotta agree however, the Twins have chosen some real clunkers over the years. Seth may remember the name of that big first baseman they took some years ago, Henry something. He lasted what, three years in the minors? Then there was the rapidly rising shortstop from SoCal maybe what, six or seven years ago? And who was the outfielder, I believe from Washington State, taken high a few years before Morneau?

Twins President Derek Falvey is In Over His Head
rdehring replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting comment Riverbrian. It probably does make sense that there be one person in charge. And the owners chose Falvey. The question we probably should be asking is how is he doing in that role? Just as you mentioned about marketing, etc., has Falvey hired or promoted qualified people into senior management positions? Has he given them the opportunity to manage their departments without excessive interference by him? As for the team on the field, that person should be Jeremy Zoll. Is Zoll making the decisions regarding the team that is on the field? Or is he an errand boy for Falvey? Sure seems that he is an errand boy and that is the problem.- 81 replies
