  1. Part of this, to me anyway, is that the division has been so bad for most of this timeframe. That makes even the good years seem more average-ish. With maybe the exception of 2010, I never thought this team was better than the opponent they faced in the first round of the playoffs. That doesn't excuse them from not winning a single game (or even a series), but perhaps gives a more realistic view on all of the lost series. And in my mind, that trickles down to the regular season eventually. And my main complaint during most of the 2010s was that this team was treading water; neither improving nor getting worse and doing little in the way of trying to do anything about it. They only continued to do the same thing until the FO changed over. It's not the team's fault that the division is what it is/was and it's certainly better to be the best of that division than not, but being good enough to win a crummy division and little else doesn't really make me feel all that better. Yes, it's more fun to watch winning baseball than not, but I guess that I set my sights a little higher than that.
  2. I'd be pretty disappointed. That said, it would make some sense if the FO thinks Martin or Lewis (or someone else) will be ready this season, just not on Opening Day. I can understand that logic. I won't like it in the interim, but that approach does make sense. He's likely to be an easy DFA decision.
  3. That Donaldson guy wasn't too shabby a signing either.
  4. There's quite a bit to digest here. I think I'd hate to see most of it play out, but if it came to it, I'd love to see the FO actually make that level of commitment to overhaul the roster. And to me, the linchpin of all of that is Buxton. If can't extend him, they have to trade him. And if they trade him, now would be the time to make other drastic moves to avoid a long rebuild. That said, there are a few of these I wouldn't mind seeing regardless. Trading Sano and Donaldson could make some sense, and gambling on Ray isn't a bad idea either.
  5. As a general rule, I hated the Dome. Too many nice days/nights spent indoors. That said, I do have some fond memories there. Kubel capping his cycle with a grand slam, completing a comeback for the team after getting down early; Prince Fielder's inside-the-park HR; and the final series there.
  6. Figure out the Buxton situation and then go from there. He's the key to any scenario, so until it's settled, there's no point in making decisions on anyone else, IMHO.
  7. Big Cruz fan, but I think the fit isn't there as it has been in years past. Way too many bat first/only guys coming up. There should much bigger priorities than bringing him back.
  8. Some of this depends on how they're going after 2022. If they're trying to remain competitive, then I'm shopping Arraez for sure. I'm not opposed to shopping Kepler and Sano, but prefer to keep them. Kirilloff should be the 1B and Sano the DH. I think Garver needs to be kept at this point. Jeffers isn't ready to carry the load. And as @chpettit19pointed out, what's the minor league depth there? If they're rebuilding next season, I probably try to trade them all.
  9. I have no real qualms with this order, aside from maybe Ryan being above Larnach. I tend to value pitching more than a corner outfield types with below average gloves, even if they have middle of the order potential. Admittedly, there could be some recent SSS playing into that logic in this particular case.
  10. I'm kinda in this boat. I really don't like the WC games, but they're pretty low on my gripes list these days.
  11. I agree on Scherzer. I don't blame him. He's used to working through those spots. I also don't disagree with him getting pulled. I thought it made sense when there is no guarantee for tomorrow and have the bullpen the Dodgers do.
  12. Quantity over quality doesn't do anything for you?
  13. This is the logical choice. Not much of a contest, in my view. The team needed a pitcher to step up and Ober did just that. One of the few positive developments on the pitching front this season. I hope he continues to build on this season and continues to develop.
  14. I agree. There are several pieces on the roster that don't fit. At some point, it simply makes more sense to start dealing guys instead of trying to fit square pegs into a round hole. I wouldn't have a problem with either of them being dealt.
  15. But they've already got guys that are better all around players at both of those positions. Therein lies the problem. While I agree completely with the last sentence, there's other context to consider with Arraez.
  16. I tend to agree with @Mike Sixel on the bats. Though, they're probably a little top heavy. Not a ton of depth there, or versatility defensively. At least position players are easier to acquire. If I can't have both, I'd much rather have quality pitching depth getting developed.
  17. Strangely enough, I seem to enjoy those seasons more...
  18. On a more serious note, thanks to @Matthew Lenz and all of the game recappers. I'm sure that they're not always an enjoyable assignment, but I look to them every day!
  19. If the quote in your first post on this thread is any indication, the scales are broken anyway so there's no way of knowing!
  20. Don't want to oversell it!
  21. As others have said, thanks for these weekly write-ups, Nick! They're always a good read whether you caught every game or none at all in a given week.
  22. I don't think that just because one acknowledges that they weren't that bad after mid-May, that it means that that line of logic carries into next season. They played one game below .500 since their low point mid-May, IIRC. That's not great, I don't think anyone is suggesting otherwise. Considering everything that happened to this team, there is some positivity related to that. However, that obviously doesn't give them a pass going into next season. Clearly they have work to do heading into next season.
  23. Well, I'm glad that's over!

    Spring training start yet?!?

  24. That one got me too. My belief that it was going to be his last game was the one and only reason that I was in attendance for that game. I had plenty of other things that I should have been doing. Not one single regret after how that game played out.
  25. I know it's the Cubs, but its good to see Ryan show that he's healthy and can dominate. Some positivity in this otherwise ugly season.
