    This is an interesting aspect of the managers job. While I do think a manager will do more for the brand by winning, I don't think that HoF credentials are meaningless in this conversation. The fact that he's from MN only makes it a bigger impact. People like and want to be associated with successful people in hopes that some of that rubs off on them. I don't see that this case is all that different. The casual fan will be more likely to latch on to that when things are tougher. Winning however, takes care of all of that. While I've never liked the Molitor hiring, I have always thought it to be a pretty good marketing move. However, I don't want a marketing prop to be the manager. I have always hoped that I would be proven wrong, but I don't feel that way at all four years in.

    Hiring of the coaches and signing baseball smart players is about all I can hinge on the FO. But that comes in after faulting the players first and the coaches for not teaching and/or reinforcing the fundamentals. These are things that are taught at a relatively early age, but if the players aren't playing the game correctly it's up to the coaches to get them to. If the fundamentals weren't taught to a player before, it's up to the coaches to teach them. I don't think that it's a major league managers job to teach fundamentals generally speaking, but if they weren't taught or ingrained by this point somebody has to do it. I agree that an reaction to a given situation should be automatic, but that reaction is purely mental. The only physical part of it is the throw or catch or swing or whatever. But that reaction is started in the brain and being aware of what's going on around you within the game.

    From what I saw, all bases were covered properly. The pitcher covered home like he was supposed to and somebody, I assume the 2B, was covering second. My first reaction was that perhaps home wasn't covered, so he ate the ball so the runner couldn't score but Magill covered it properly.

    I agree with both of these things. My issue with the usage revolves more around how often guys are used (and not used) than which pitcher he uses in a given situation. He tends to run his best pieces into the ground to the point where they're no longer effective. At that point, I don't really care what other managers do, it's on him to figure out a way to keep his players effective.

    That's just it. He perhaps should be fired, but I don't see it happening either. The worst part of that is that it wasted 4+ years of what was supposed to be the young, up and coming core of the future of this franchise.

    They've been happening all season though. They've been a sizable contributing factor to why they are where they are. It's also been a problem for Molitor led teams for most of the time that he's been at the helm. It's not just this season.

    Mental errors are on the player first, coaching second. It takes no minimum level of skill to properly execute a play. The physical aspects of the game most assuredly rely on talent, but the mental part of the has no bearing on how talented a player is. So to say that these mental errors are on the FO is misguided. That's what coaches are for.

    These are fair assessments in my view. I don't really think that he's the worst manager in the game, but he's clearly not the best. I think I'd grade him out in the C- range myself. Bullpen usage has always been an issue. Some of his lineups are odd at times, but that's not as big of a deal as other things. He caters to the veteran more than I'd like, which is a massive problem on a team that was young and up-and-coming when he was hired. He still exhibits this mentality now. While they have improved a bit over the course of the year, I still think that this team lacks sound fundamentals. I don't think he gets everything out of his players that he can. Baserunning and situational play, hallmarks of Molitor's playing career, are lacking on this team. If he can't instill his own strengths as a player into his team, that's a problem. I do think that he knows the game and knows it extremely well. I just don't think he's able to translate that into what it takes to be a good manager. He may be a very good coach in another situation, but I've never felt that he's been the right fit for this team.

    I'd try to trade him first and if there are no takers just let it ride out this season. There's virtually no way I re-sign him unless it's a team friendly deal with the understanding that I'm bringing in a younger guy to start in front of him. While probably unlikely, my hope is that Gordon is able to force his way north after ST.

    I think you let him ride out the AAA season and make him earn the call up afterwards. He's so crucial to the future of this club, along with Sano, that you need to give him opportunities to succeed. If he starts raking AAA pitching and has some confidence that would be the time to bring him up. Otherwise, let him reset over the offseason, work on his craft and come in to ST hungry to stick with the big league club.

    I think you're reading into my comment far more than how I meant it. He said that it's difficult to win without your best pieces. His words, not mine. I simply stated that they didn't win with those "best pieces", so stating that it's difficult to win while not having them, while true, is missing the point. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm not attacking him or his comments. Clearly he's frustrated by the sell off, as he should be. I figured Erv to have a little more perspective I guess.

    I guess that I don't feel that I'm being all that critical. It's not like I'm destroying him for his comments and I even stated that I didn't really care about what he said. I don't think he was really unprofessional, just missing the point regardless of the question asked. He has a right to be frustrated and nobody likes to see a sell off. Fact of the matter is that they didn't do their job earlier in the season and that is what put them in this position to begin with. Like I said in my first post, I like to see the frustration. It shows they care. But ability to win games based on the pieces presently around him, or the others, is a moot point when they didn't win when the best pieces were here.

    I think the point being missed, including by Erv, is that they weren't winning with their best pieces. So, complaining about not being able to win without your best pieces is really misguided and silly. I don't really care so much about what he said as it relates to the sell off, I like to see frustration with how this season has gone. Their job is to win games with the players available and they didn't do that, which is why the current situation exists.

    Right, and I get that he's not all that young. Since he's much more likely to be here next season, it would stand to reason that he should see more action. I'm not losing sleep over it, I just see it as Molitor playing another veteran over somebody who could use the playing time more for future considerations.

    Don't get me wrong, I'm not losing sleep over it. It's not as though Adrianza couldn't slide anywhere else on the infield if an injury came up during a game if he started. It's not like he's DH'ing. I just don't see much use in playing Forsythe since it's very unlikely that he'll be back.

    I realize that Forsythe isn't high on the list of concerns for this club. He's played well here, I'll definitely give him credit there. My issue is that he's playing every day. Why isn't Adrianza playing 2B to at least see if he can back up his good streak with the bat when he was playing every day. Unless Gordon finishes hot and has a hot spring, he's not going to be on the active roster come the start of next season. Forsythe isn't the future answer, Adrianza is at least signed for next year so why not give him a run there? Molitor's refusal to actually try to build up the young guys continues to irk me. Just another reason why I don't believe that he's the right fit here.

    Yeah, that's not the type of clubhouse leadership that I want from a guy.

    I'm hoping that this is not the case, but feel that you may be at least some truth to it. If this is true, I'd say that they're doing themselves a disservice by not at least seeing what they do have. In a season that is already lost, there is no harm in seeing what you've got or at least giving deserving AAA players a chance. I don't really think it looks good to players in the system or guys signing minor league deals either. It's hard to sell the hope of getting a spot on the big league roster when there is a mountain of evidence to suggest that won't be the case even if they're earning one. That has to be extremely frustrating to be one of those guys that has seemingly earned a spot but continue to get usurped by aging veteran castoffs.

    Fair question, but the list of players worth keeping in that timeframe isn't all that long to begin with unfortunately.

    If this was the plan, Gibson would have been traded this deadline. Since they hung on to him and anyone else with team control past this season (Pressly being the exception), that tells me that they still think they can compete next season. They do have work to do this offseason, but with so many players having career worst type years, it may not be as much as it seems. I do hope that they bring in more depth as a contingency though.

    I'd retire due to the concussions alone.

    While I agree that carrying six starters is stupid, the fact that Molitor won't use Magill renders the argument about the front office kind of moot, IMO. Secondly, Molitor could have simply used his sixth starter out of the pen.

    That's encouraging to see him get challenged and adjust quickly. Fun to watch, for sure.

    I wouldn't be opposed to that either. I do like that they have options to mix and match for next years rotation, with both veterans and prospects. I think that's a very good thing.
