Reports are the Orioles are interested. If they are interested they have the prospect capital that will make it necessary for Jenkins to be part of any Twins offer.

If Julien returns to form and Lee is ready there is space for both. Concur. I will bite. I can’t think of a Miller who was moved last off season that the Twins missed on and could have won the bid. Maybe you are referring to Bryce. I think the Seattle Times reported that DiPoto was not looking to trade Miller or Woo. Sometimes that is smoke but neither guy moved so I am guessing it would have taken a huge overpay.

Julien has work to do and he might go backwards before moving forward. No more called third strikes. Let’s hope he starts fouling off that close third strikes in AAA to the tune of some long at bats where he won’t give in to the pitcher. It might take until after the all star break but I believe he will return to make the kind of impact he did in 2023.

Jeffers executed the bunt to put Margot in scoring position for Miranda. That keeps him off my bad list.

I think I used both. Using both prevents me from simply choosing the one that fits my narrative. Restricting to rWAR. It ranks him at 27th and 40th among starting pitchers in the previous two seasons. Should I expect that in a low end number 2 and a high end 3? I would have thought that should be around 60th.

Should ranks ranging 10 through 47 and overall 16 put him in the low end 2nd or high end 3rd starter range?

I didn’t intend to mislead. It is simply the data when the Twins have faced a left handed starter. He is 2/30 as a sub.

The plan was to improve their line up against a left handed starter. In games started by a lefty few players on the roster have put up better numbers than Margot. He has a team best OBP of .370 in those games and OPS of .810. Castro and Miranda have better OPS. Kepler also has a better OPS often as a sub.

I would give Kepler some starts against lefties sitting him no more than once a week. He would replace Farmer in the line up against some left handed pitching..

I would probably use WAR because that will also reflect a sustained contribution.

I am not sure it is wise to cut either at this point. Margot gets on base against lefties and is solid on a corner. The money is spent and that role is useful. The 2023 Farmer is useful also and seeing if that ability shows itself in June.

Does that mean he would rank in the 55 to 65 range among starting pitchers over the last few years?

There are situations where Margot is part of the best 9 on this team. I think Margot is in LF if the Twins want to end with their best defensive 9. His .328 OBP against left handed pitching is among the best on the team and probably why we have seen him lead off against lefties recently. Castro is better but they can put him at 2B against a lefty. I am not sure that Farmer is part of any best 9 once Lewis returns. I don’t think he best 9 defensively with Julien’s progress at 2B. I am not confident he is best 9 against left handed pitching with they way Castro has hit this year. Is he a better hitter against lefties than Margot? Castro can make either expendable. Is the Farmer of 2023 still there? That player is starting against lefties and pinch hitting. It may be worth sending out Julien for a reset and seeing if June brings out the Farmer that we saw last year and earned that contract. Best case is to have the depth that includes Farmer and Margot performing as we hoped,

Twins Minor League Report (5/31): Olivar Steals the Show
jorgenswest replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I think the struggles of Varland and Wallner are partially an indicator that they are making changes. Change is difficult and takes time. It often requires steps backward before moving forward. Drew MacPhail spoke about the work that they were doing with the two on last week’s Twins Insider. In fact if a player goes down and starts tearing up AAA, I wonder if they are working at all to make the changes necessary to get back to the majors. They may be sending Julien down to get reset. I hope to see numbers that indicate he is attacking pitching in or near the strike zone rather than taking so many strikes. That change may cause him to struggle some.- 14 replies

Castro has started to see some second base time. Twice this week Margot has been the pinch hitter for Julien and taken Castro’s spot in left field. Castro has gone to second base with Miranda staying at third. Farmer is no longer the natural pinch hitter for Julien. Castro is trusted and his infield positions. His use has declined. May plate appearances. I excluded Martin and Buxton. Farmer 36 Vazquez 55 Margot 57 Kirilloff 63 Larnach 65 Julien 81 Miranda 91 Miranda has become an everyday player. He has more plate appearances than Santana in the last 14 days. There is space for him in the line up. They may send out Julien to get reset and start Castro at 2B. If their use is an indicator of value to the team it has to be Farmer.

I would argue that his best years were the two in Cincinnati where he was their starting shortstop. The “league average” hitter was the illusion of his use. Scale the left/right mix to the ratio of a regular or his previous two years and he would have had about the same OPS+ as his years with the Reds. The money is spent and the Twins won’t find another team to take the contract. He will hit better and maybe close to the level he hit last year the rest of the way. He still has some value to bring to the team in his limited role.

Glad to have Woods Richardson. I really think Berrios, Woods Richardson and Martin need to be tied to the Sonny Gray trade. The Twins don’t need to pay Berrios so they have a slot for Gray. They don’t make the move for Gray if they still have Berrios. Additions: Gray (2 years), SWR, Martin Cost: Berrios (1+ year) and Petty. If they had kept Berrios through his contract, I think they still have Petty. They will get a comp pick for Gray but I didn’t add that to the ledger since they would have probably got a pick for Berrios too. If they extended Berrios then I think they probably don’t give Lopez an extension and the comp pick needs to go back on the addition side of the ledger. Gray was so valuable last year that the moves were an overall win but Petty could easily out perform Woods Richardson and Martin in the end. I will acknowledge Petty’s first two months of AA this year have been a struggle.

Wade is not a good outfielder even on a corner. He started two games in centerfield for the Giants. Both were in early April of his first season with the team. He did not finish either game in CF. The Giants have played him less in the outfield and more at first base to the point where he has only 5 starts in the outfield this year. I think Cave was kept because of his defense.

Is his presence on the roster maddening to the point where his contributions last night can’t be appreciated? He hit two balls that had an expected batting average of .500 last night. That liner to left exited at 103 mph and he was credited with a double. That doesn’t happen if it is a weak pop up or grounder. The liner to right with a velocity of 96 was caught. He hit two liners with an xBA of around .500 and one of them falls which I guess is what should was expected. One reason to be optimistic that he will hit better the rest of the way: His current average exit velocity is at the high point of his career. One reason to be pessimistic that he will not be close to good enough the rest of the was: His strikeout/walk rate is at the low point of his career. Optimistic or pessimistic, he still is going to make contributions to the team that can be appreciated.

Great job of Duran holding the ball, varying the timing and the slide step. Really perfectly executed by all three and the runner wasn’t even close to the bag when tagged.

I can’t support it but I do believe that there are aspects to a catcher’s defense that are either poorly measured or not measured at all. There have been too many poor hitting catchers getting significant playing time on successful teams. The money is already committed and they can’t get it back. I don’t think they can inexpensively replace Vázquez with a catcher that would be close to his value to the team. I acknowledge that I make that statement without any ability to support it with metrics.

Vazquez threw the ball exactly where he planned and the only way to get that runner out. The new rule or emphasis for 2024 is blocking the bag and Vazquez and Correa have been working on this since spring training. The Athletic reported that the conversation on the mound was to execute the play exactly as we saw. Duran, Correa and Vazquez did a fantastic job getting that out.

Tonight’s win wasn’t the first he played a critical role. There are a handful of veteran catchers that haven’t hit and been critical to their team’s success. Martin Maldonado was very valuable to the Astros. They can’t get the salary money back and I don’t think he can cheaply be replaced by someone who will be more valuable to the team.
