  1. Good point. I went to look at his AAA strike out numbers. In 874 plate appearances it was 17.7%. It was a different context for strikeouts in his era but that is a number that suggests he didn’t have very much swing and miss in AAA. I was hoping for otherwise.
  2. For 2024 the trade seems like a loss for the Twins. If the dollars argument is relevant, Polanco’s salary was used to fill three holes (SP, RP, 1B). While Santana was helpful at 1B, they did not look elsewhere to fill the number 4 starter spot. Varland was terrible in the rotation to start the year. Festa was OK. Matthews was bad. Those three combined for 30 starts that didn’t go to DeSclafani. I suppose they could have turned to Varland when Paddack went down and then SWR if Varland matched his 4 bad start from the start of the season, but it is still a bunch of ineffective starts as a result of trading for a pitcher with a huge injury risk to fill that hole. A similar argument can be made for Topa who had one healthy outlier season. They didn’t look elsewhere for that #4 spot in the bullpen. I would argue this trade was a loss in 2024. Hopefully it will be a net plus after a few years.
  3. Change takes time. Last year Wallner was sent down in mid April. By the end of May and 167 AAA plate appearances later his triple slash was 180/285/394 in the hitting environment of St. Paul. In the next 5 weeks it was 342/417/726 and he returned. His strikeout rate in the first stretch was 40%. It was a still high but manageable 29% in 132 plate appearances of his last stretch. They used that option to give him 299 AAA plate appearances to get straightened out. I am optimistic that at least one of Julien or Miranda will be able to make the necessary changes with their opportunity in AAA this year.
  4. It is one of those jobs when you really only notice the failures. Is there any data to suggest that the Twins are thrown out more at home for the outfield more than the typical team. I guess we would also need data on missed opportunities. Teams that never get caught are probably missing opportunities to score. I don’t disagree that you keep him at third yesterday with no outs on a likely close play. I strongly disagree that he generally looks lost out there.
  5. They sent Wallner down 297 plate AAA late appearances last year and he struggled the first 6-7 weeks at that level. Give them a long stretch and I think at least one will contribute to this team.
  6. Concur. My sentiments every time they bring in Duran to close a game instead of trying to get by and save him for the next game. I wonder how much Fitzgerald on the bench moves the needle. His career AAA numbers with the bat are significantly below Clemons and Bride. I wouldn’t start him ahead of them. He hasn’t primarily been a shortstop in the minors so it seems unlikely he would have a plus or even league average glove there. Does it move the needle enough to put him on the bench and risk not have Correa or Buxton for the Guardians series? The Twins could be dangerously think today with one option on the bench assuming Bader needs more time also. Maybe it is enough of a needle mover to make sure they have coverage in case two go down today.
  7. With the Guardian series on Monday the Twins should try to keep that door open for Buxton and Correa though it means a very short bench for the Brewer games.
  8. I would definitely give Gasper another shot. He has a significant stretch of success in AAA and a very small sample in the majors with scattered at bats. He has a career OBP of over .400 in high A, AA and AAA. His older age at the levels probably was a factor in not getting a sustained shot in the majors.
  9. Congratulations to Ryan! Imagine the work and dedication to go undrafted and start in the independent leagues in 2017. Ten stops and 8 years later Fitzgerald is a major leaguer.
  10. The Twins have the Guardians on Monday. Putting Buxton or Correa on that 7 day IL would result in missing the entire series. If the Twins think they could be available they will have to get by on a short roster for the Brewers series. Concussions are really difficult to diagnose the return so they can either gamble forfeiting them for the Guardians to add reinforcements today or gamble that they will be available by Monday.
  11. Encouraging recent stretch for Rodriguez. Good to see Eeles back. Gonzalez looks promising again and just 21. Looking forward to seeing McCusker get a chance.
  12. Do you think age matters? Woods Richardson is 24. Rogers and Pfaadt are 26. Did I miss anyone with age and possible upside in their favor? Maybe age is irrelevant. Do Frank Viola’s occur anymore? In his first two years (age 22 and 23) he had an ERA-of 122 and 128 after 336 innings. I am not saying that Woods Richardson is Viola and a future Cy Young. I am just wondering about whether age is an important factor to consider for his future as a starter. I am optimistic about Woods Richardson because he is 24. I think he can improve on his career ERA- of 112 over his age 23 and 24 seasons. Perhaps it is blind optimism.
  13. It took Garret Crochet to get Teel. The Twins don’t have anyone that can match Crochet. I don’t see an oops here.
  14. Honestly don’t get the Android device reference or the clip. Too old for that stuff. Never been on TikTok and have no idea what “describes your life” has to do with this. If you really care I watched the clip of my computer monitor but my eyes are old. I can defer to the younger eyes that don’t see a jaw moving up and down as Buxton comes in. In that case it is Buxton’s fault.
  15. Last year Wallner was sent down and had a very rough stretch there. He was sent out on April 15. By the end of May his AAA triple slash was 190/285/394 after 165 plate appearances. The comments about him at that point are similar to those about Julien and Miranda now. Be patient. Change is hard and hitting is hard. Changes often result in going backwards before moving forward and it takes time. I would give Julien and Miranda that time and leave them in AAA but not give up optimism of their upside if they struggle the for a long stretch. Gasper on the other hand really hasn’t had a long enough stretch in the majors to make any judgment based on his batting line. I would call him up and believe he is capable of giving the Twins competitive at bats.
  16. You can see Buxton calling for the ball on the replay but it was loud with kids packing the stadium. Centerfield has priority. Correa didn’t hear him early enough with the noise. I don’t find anyone at fault. It was two guys determined to make sure that ball was caught. I hope they return soon.
  17. Going into the Guardian series on Monday they probably want the starter that gives them the best chance of limiting the use of the pen. Which of Matthew or Festa is likelier to go deeper into the game?
  18. As long as a player has options and hits in the minors they will get opportunities. I wouldn’t give them a AAAA tag until options are exhausted. I don’t think the Twins see it that way either. Is the AAAA tag something a team manager or exec has used in describing a player? Is it just a creation that columnists, podcast hosts and bloggers started using?
  19. I would think so. It is the first time in his career he has consecutive starts with game scores in the 70s. He did have three game scores in the 80s in 2019 but they were not back to back. Is it possible he finally is back from his long stretch of injuries? There were so many players this series that stepped up. How many played multiple positions? A few played at least three positions. That positional flexibility the Twins seem to value was needed in this series.
  20. Agree. I also believe the rain out forced the issue. They had the rotation set for Guardians/Royals week before the rain with SWR pitching Sunday. By calling up Funderburk instead of a starter I think they had decided to make this move before he took the mound yesterday.
  21. Is there a source and number that goes with tons? I found this by Fangraphs contributer Kiri Oler.
  22. I think the move can help them set up the series for the Guardian/Royal week. They would need a starter on the 18th and 28th before he would be able to return. I also think the decision was made to do this before yesterday’s game. They chose not to bring up a starter for game 2 as the 27th man. Failing to bring up a starter meant that they would need one by Sunday.
  23. I appreciated listening to the podcast. Thank you. I would add that McCusker did not play first base in summer league or college or independent ball or the minors with the Twins. It doesn’t seem possible that no one at all those stops thought to look at him at first base. The only conclusion that makes sense to me is that he has been given practice time at first base and does not have the hands and feet necessary to play the position. The same is true for Larnach. Both are right handed throwers without any time in the infield in spite of being limited to corner outfield. It can’t be that no one in college or the minors thought of trying them there.
  24. @Matthew Trueblood How many swings before a swing speed change becomes reliable? It seems like it wouldn’t need a very large sample.
