Regardless of your feelings towards the front office and the players they acquired/lost this off-season, last years team was in first place as late as September 4th, then lost Buxton (actually in August), Polanco, Kepler, Mahle, and Gray among others. Hopefully they won't have to use them, but the players the team brought in are better than the replacements they had to use last season.

I think now that the team will be losing players to the WBC and the first round of re-assignments to minor league camp coming up, we will start to see Buxton, Kirilloff ad Polanco in games.

Not worried about Maeda, he threw two scoreless the other day with the batters knowing what's coming. https://www.mlb.com/twins/news/kenta-maeda-on-pitchcom-during-spring-training-game-vs-rays

Saints Setting Up for Loaded Rotation
mnfireman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
So now the conversation has turned from "where is the pitching pipeline" to "holy crap, the Saints rotation is loaded with more on the the way." LOL. Somedays this site cracks me up!! Seriously though, this is a good problem to have given the injury history of some of the MLB rotation.- 31 replies

Buxton has started 34 games at DH in his career, all of them last season, all of them after he injured himself on an awkward slide into 2B. Those starts at DH were part of the "plan" hatched after that injury to get his bat into the line-up semi-regularly. That plan did not work as Buxton missed time, was unavailable on his days off and eventually underwent season ending knee surgery, something that could have been done in April and had him back on the field in late July/early August. If healthy, he should start in CF, not at DH. His value is much greater when his bat AND glove are in the line-up.

Is This Where Byron Buxton’s Injuries End?
mnfireman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Buxton is healthy enough to play, he is in CF. If somebody else is starting in CF this team is in trouble. -
Is This Where Byron Buxton’s Injuries End?
mnfireman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Before 2022 Buxton started 0 games at DH, he doesn't improve the line-up from there. If Buxton is going to play 130 or more games, those games need to be in CF. Taylor will give value with spot starts or IL fill-in if/when Buxton (or Kepler/Gallo/Larnach) gets hurt and being able to enter as a defensive replacement late in games to give Buxton (or Kepler/Gallo/Larnach) a few innings off without hurting the teams defense. And if Gordon gets 50 starts in CF this team is in big trouble and out of contention early due to injuries and/or ineffectiveness. -
Are You Ready for Emilio Pagan to Work?
mnfireman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well there are Joe Nathan, LaTroy Hawkins, Rick Aguilera, Glen Perkins, Liam Hendriks, and Eddie Guardado as just a few Twins who failed as starters and became good relievers for many seasons. If Lopez's personal issues have been resolved and he can concentrate on baseball, I foresee good things from him this year and next.- 63 replies

Burnes publicly expressing his displeasure over the arbiters decision speaks a great deal to his personal character. While he may be unhappy over the amount, I see no reason why the Brewers would want to trade him. I also don't see him being able to force a trade either, because the Brewers would just ask for an unrealistic return (see Reynolds, Bryan and Pittsburgh). Burnes is not going anywhere soon, especially to Minnesota.

Twins Injury Concerns to Monitor in Spring Training
mnfireman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
From Do-Hyoung Park: Falvey reaffirmed that Kenta Maeda will not have any restrictions this spring following his recovery from Tommy John surgery, and that Tyler Mahle “feels fantastic” after making some changes to his offseason programming following a visit to Driveline.- 25 replies

Twins Injury Concerns to Monitor in Spring Training
mnfireman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The biggest injury concern for me is Buxton, though having Taylor on the roster may alleviate the issue a little. Over the course of his career, the team's winning percentage is .548 in games he plays in, 89 wins per season, including 48-44, .521, last year. In games he starts, the team's winning percentage is .537 for his career, 87 wins per season, including 47-39, .546, last year. Having him in the line-up for 140+ games this year is a must for this team to succeed.- 25 replies

One "Moore" Bullpen Piece for Minnesota
mnfireman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
People continuously come on TD suggesting the FO sign another BP arm. While the idea is sound, who gets cut from the 40 man? I think the MLB signings are done for the team until they can move guys to the 60 day IL.- 40 replies

Miranda admitted to tiring down the stretch last year, so HE chose to get in better shape. HE said HE eliminated chocolate and other sweets from his diet and ate more lean meat and vegetables. Sounds to me like he lost some so-called baby fat and replaced it with lean muscle. This body change should lead to more agility in the field, better (not great) speed on the basebaths and less strain on knees, hips, core and his overall health. All of which should lead to him having a very good season for the Twins.

Maybe that slide last September loosened something up in the plate.

TD is a bunch of GM-wannabes who think they know everything about Player A, B or C. They do not. Especially if numbers can used to prove that their opinion is wrong. Gallo is who he is. He is going to strike out, he is going to walk and he is going to hit HR's. He is also going to play above average defense and fans are going to not like him. 3 true outcomes suck and I do not think they are good for the game, but here we are. He has a reasonable 1 year contract and the team can release him and walk away at any time. I do not see a losing side to this contract.

Spring training signing after guys can be moved to the 60 day IL, if the team thinks they need him.

The Twins Need to be Realistic With Max Kepler
mnfireman replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He played nearly every day in Sep/Oct and slashed .252/.298/.396 (.694 OPS) compared to .279/.323/.439 (.762 OPS) through August 31 as a part time/utility player. He also slashed .200/.298/.275 (.542 OPS) vs LHP compared to .289/.329/.465 (.793 OPS) vs RHP. He is best suited to a utility/platoon role.- 69 replies

The Twins Need to be Realistic With Max Kepler
mnfireman replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Would you be surprised to know that Kepler's slash line in the 3-4 spots was .262/.352/.372 for a .724 OPS in 2022? And the Twins 3-4 hitters slashed .254/.333/.389 for a .722 OPS overall.- 69 replies

I believe Gordon will get plenty of playing time in 2023, but I don't think he is an everyday player at any position. He played almost everyday in Sep & Oct last year and his numbers, when compared to his overall numbers, were way down. For the season he finished with a slash line of .272/.316/.427, but his Sep/Oct slash line was .252/.298/.396. There are many reasons for numbers falling off, and over-exposure is one of them. He will be better suited to 2 or 3 starts a week and some late inning PH/defensive replacement appearances, about 100 games overall.

An Ace From Within; Dreams of Duran
mnfireman commented on Nick Hanzlik's blog entry in Twins on Wheat; Add Mayo
Confidence and mental state are crucial to all aspects of baseball, but especially to pitching. To a certain degree, to be a true stud on the mound, you have to have the mindset that you are the biggest and baddest motherf----- in the land. No one can beat you. That mindset comes from confidence, which comes from success. This statement right here is all the reason I need to at least hope the team gives him a shot at being a starter, either this year or next. Many great starters began their careers as relievers - Pedro Martinez, Adam Wainwright, Corbin Burnes, Chris Sale, and Curt Schilling among them. I also know that these are the exception to the rule, but what if.....
