That's not an unreasonable position. I guess I'm not as worried but if the brass was worried about it, fine.

Liriano was a sept call up but spent the first six weeks of 2006 in the pen as well. Perkins spent nearly all of 07 in the pen (i think he was on the DL as well) Santana wasn't a fulltime starter until his third season with the ML team. The point is that the Twins have certainly used the bullpen as an introductory method for young pitchers before.

We did it with Santana, Liriano and Perkins (among others). There's nothing overly risky about getting him some BP time in the majors. He'd get to face ML quality hitters in limited situations, building up confidence, while learning to play in the majors. He seems to be able to handle AA pitchers. Over his last ten starts - 55 innings - he has a 1.46 era and 60 strike outs v 20 walks. Move him.

Nice start by Romero. I think he's done enough of these five inning starts in AA. Just move him to AAA or bring him up to our pen now and let him finish the year up here and hopefully we can plug him into a rotation spot next spring.

I've mentioned this before but I really loved last years picks of Miranda and Baddoo back to back. Really young guys (both were 17 on draft day) but already had solid tools. Both added some muscle per Bob this offseason. They are a long way off but there's a lot to be excited about for both of them.

A couple thoughts - 1) he might be up into the pen 2) an innings limit, as opposed to shutting him down early, still keeps him on his routine of getting ready for a start every fifth day (or whatever it is in AA).

Nice article, Seth. I really like Gordon and am enjoying his break out year. With Polanco struggling a lot, maybe Gordon is the longterm answer at short for us.

It's time to move Rooker. I'm ok with him starting in that league since he's getting used to playing everyday, habits and whatnot but it's time to move him to a more competitive environment. He's 22. He should be in A ball as a minimum now.

Article: Reflecting On The Draft 1 Month Later
gunnarthor replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins could have gone over by 5% but they'd also pay a 75% luxury tax on that amount so to go over by 700k would actually cost the Pohlads a bit over 1.2m. Seems dubious to expect this ownership group to pay a tax they don't have to pay. -
I'm not sure harder is the problem. He still seems to have good velocity. He might be like Mike Pelfrey who had a pretty solid fastball (93 avg) and low k numbers. I have to think it's a mechanical issue. How is it possible that a mid 90s fastball isn't striking out more AA hitters?

Article: Reflecting On The Draft 1 Month Later
gunnarthor replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think you're over thinking this. Teams probably don't have a #1, #2 etc list like BA has. They have tiers. The Twins probably had 4-5 guys in the #1 pick tier based on ability. They then negotiated with those guys. Greene, Wright and McKay all said they'd need 7m or more. Lewis said he'd take 6.7m. The Twins didn't see any major difference in any of them so they went with Lewis who gave them more flexibility with the rest of their draft. All the major draft sights - BA, pipeline, Klaw - have said that Lewis' tools are worthy of the #1 pick so it's not like the Twins sacrificed talent at the top. -
Nice day for lots of our guys. Good to see.

Baddoo with four walks, awesome. He's a long way off but if he ends up with good plate discipline to go with all those other tools, woo-hoo.

So you think the pitchers in the SEC, like Faedo, only threw him fastballs?

I think Baddoo is quickly becoming my favorite non-top prospect. I think he could really jump up these rankings in a year.

One of the few knocks on Gibson in the minors that I remember reading was that he lacked the "meanness" to be an effective starter. He was too nice. I assume that meant not throwing inside, too much nibbling etc.

Article: Miguel Sano, Ervin Santana Named All-Stars
gunnarthor replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
fip and fwar are tied together. I think there's enough doubt about fip out there to go with b-ref for most. k% is 24th on fangraphs (not that there' that much difference) but pretty good pitchers can still live in that area. Gotta admit, I didn't know they tracked QS%. -
Article: Miguel Sano, Ervin Santana Named All-Stars
gunnarthor replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
At the break, Santana is #2 in IP, 4th in ERA, 5th in ERA+, 6th in WAR, 1st in both CG and SHO, 5th in WHIP and 7th in WPA. Seems like a reasonable pick for the all-star game. -
Well, on mlb's list Mauricio is #10, Valera is #21 and Rodriguez is #9. Marte is #3. That's probably closer to the industry consensus. Daniel Flores, #2 on both lists, signed for 3.1m. Franco, #1, got 3.8m. The bigger question, in my mind, is why did Pereira, #4 on both lists, sign with the Yankees for only 1.5m? Are the Yankees doing a Red Sox and funneling him money?

Article: Miguel Sano, Ervin Santana Named All-Stars
gunnarthor replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good for both and both are deserving. And, more importantly, my pre-season prediction that Sano would be an all-star was correct! -
Good thing you're not a professional scout. Every single reputable draft scouting place had him as a 1st or 2nd rounder. This crap comes up every year. Buxton started slow in 2012 and people said he was a wasted pick. People wanted Morneau shipped out for Wiggington. People could only focus on Mauer's faults. Back before WAR recalculated his value, people complained about Hunter all the time. Berrios was roughed up last year and people jumped off the bandwagon left and right. Baseball is a game of failure. Rooker's going to have ups and downs before he makes the majors (he will make the majors). I have no idea what the best way to be a fan of a team is. I tend toward trusting professional evaluators that I have been able to read. Making the majors is hard. But utterly nonsense posts like yours - a first round pick is a 30th round - seem unnecessarily mean spirited and puts you in a position of hoping that a major prospect in our system fails so you can "be right."

Nice to see Baddoo and Miranda have strong starts. I really liked those picks last year because of the upside but they are far away.
