    OK, I'm really angry at the FO for not doing anything at the deadline but let's all calm down a bit. This is still a playoff team and still very likely to win the Central. This offense, even without Cruz and Buxton, is very good.

    Honestly, why not bring Rooker up and give him a chance? Nearly a .400 OBP in AAA. Some pop. RH power. Oh, he's on the IL. Forget it.

    No, I mean have you compared Gibby to other pitchers besides ours? I get that he hasn't pitched well but at the same time, fangraphs has only 13 pitchers in the AL ahead of him in WAR. He'd lead the Yankees in WAR, for instance. Domingo German has a 5.40 era against playoff hopefuls, I believe. Tanaka is 5.28 or so. The point being, I'm not convinced SSS of random teams is all that helpful.

    Is that good? Did you compare other starters to those same teams to show where Gibby stands?

    I really hate these type of comparisons. If you're going to discount his best 26 innings, shouldn't you also discount his worst innings?

    This team really needs Buxton back. He just makes the team better by a lot. Pitching is going to kill us in the playoffs but we'll make the playoffs.

    Surprising to see the big WAR differences for Gibson on b-r and fangraphs. Honestly not sure which I favor.

    They had the opportunity after the draft when Kuechel and Kimbrel were available. They had the opportunity to do so at the trade deadline. They didn't.

    I honestly think we'll take 3 out of 4 or sweep them. I wish Buxton was healthy for this series but this group has always played Cleveland well and these players have a little edge to them (I wish ownership and the FO would step up but that's a different thread). I think this is the type of series where Rosie goes off and hits 3 dingers and hits .500 for four days. Always worried about the pen and Lindor is my favorite non-Twin in a long time but we're simply a better team. By a lot. I think the players prove it this weekend.

    It could be that the Giants told the FO that they suspected he had an arm injury which is why the cost for Dyson was relatively minor - three non-top 30 prospects.

    Really impressed with all the darts the FO is throwing against the wall. Not like bullpen was an area of concern. Let's see what a 24 year old with 100 innings above A-ball pitch for a team in the pennant race. Anything to not add payroll.

    This is just a PR piece for ownership/FO. The players and fans have constantly been lied to about when the team will push their chips in. Rosario is 27, Kepler 26, Buxton 25. This isn't a young team anymore. They were nearly a playoff team in 2015, fighting the Astros to the last series of the season while bringing up impact rookies like Sano and Buxton. And they were a playoff team in 2017. This waiting for the window to open is just excuse making. We started Perez today b/c the FO didn't improve the rotation despite multiple different ways to do so. We're bringing up something called Randy Dobnak b/c the FO didn't improve the bullpen. Teams that want to win made moves. We didn't. We'll probably still win the central but Cleveland made moves that helped them this year and in the future. We couldn't figure out how to do that. It wasn't because we have a FO that's playing four dimensional chess - the Pressly trade should dissuade anyone from thinking that - they didn't do anything b/c they couldn't figure out a way to do it.

    I thought Schoop was dealing with some nagging injuries and Rocco was playing the hot hands over him. I'm not sure Arreaz is this good so I'd be shocked if the Twins removed Schoop from the roster. (He also seems to be a positive in the locker room).

    Reds nabbed him. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/08/reds-claim-kevin-gausman-waivers-braves.html I'm surprised but looks like the Reds are grabbing a lot of upside arms for next year as well. Gausman's season was brutal but he could be a reclamation project.

    Not to turn this into a WAR debate but 1) in 2012, he lost to Miguel Cabrera. Joe Posnanski actually reported that the Oakland A's internal WAR calculations had valued Cabrera's season slightly better than Trout's season, suggesting that public WAR systems overvalued defense/baserunning and undervalued games. 2) in 2018, Trout's 10+ WAR season was still second to Mookie Betts. In fact, Trout actually won MVP in a year where he didn't lead the league in WAR, "stealing" the award from Corey Kluber.

    He might get a back end vote (he has gotten votes in 4 years, finishing as high as 6th once). But he's not the MVP of the team, let alone the league.

    Yeah, he's raw. I think Buxton struggled a bit too at the same age and then flipped a switch. Hopefully he does the same. Here's pipelines current write up on him: Cavaco first started getting attention for his complete tools package at the Angel Elite showcase last fall, where his tremendous raw power particularly stood out. The only question about his offensive profile is how consistently he'll hit to get to that power, as there is some swing and miss to his game. Beyond the bat, Cavaco will show flashes of plus tools across the board. He's clocked sub-four-second times home to first out of the box and he was a plus defender at third, with very good hands, footwork, a plus arm and a willingness to stick his nose in the dirt. His profile took another leap forward when he started showing the ability to play shortstop and that's what the Twins sent him out as during his pro debut in the Gulf Coast League. Because Cavaco hadn't been invited to most of the summer showcase circuit events, there was a lack of track record on him against elite-level competition. That lack of challenge might make for a bumpier transition to pro ball, but there's confidence his tools will translate just fine eventually.

    Generally we're ok. We're better than Cleveland. I think NY and Houston are clearly better but Oak and Tampa are not. We should be favored in a home series against those two teams while being underdogs with a puncher's chance against the top two. I think ownership and/or the FO failed the players at this deadline. They should have gotten Stroman and some bullpen help. They didn't. I think the players should be pissed. I don't think Rocco has managed particularly well the last few weeks and we're burning out the bullpen - of course, every team is burning out their bullpens. But those are solvable issues to some extent - I think Rocco is good enough to get better. There are a few live arms in the minors that could help out by catching fire in the majors for a month.

    Mostly I just want to like a character. I hate Dean Koontz generic good guy characters.
