  1. I think the Twins have too many other 2024 options at 1B and DH. There are unanswered questions about Kirilloff and Buck's health and about Miranda's mysterious (probably shoulder related) reduction in hitting ability and Brooks Lee and Polo and Julien (one of whom might need to DH and/or play 1B) for the Twins to sign an expensive 39 year old player for 1B and DH. Your fine article pointed out the possible advantages of signing Turner. However, I believe I would pass on signing Turner. The Twins were projected by Fangraphs just this week of having the 6th best offense in the majors in 2024, even considering that none of the free agents will return (Solano, Gallo, Taylor, and whoever else).
  2. Mercy that is a lot of money in to be placed into each one of those egg baskets. Get it wrong, or if the pitcher suffers an injury, which negatively alters his career, and the team, which is obligated for this kind of money, is in a precarious financial position. While I understand and, in fact, advocated for the Buxton contract, it has hurt the team financially, and may continue to do so in the future. But these dollar figures for 30 year old starting pitchers are very risky. I believe I'd go with Wacha instead.
  3. Very good article. Wacha would be a fine addition to the Twins rotation. Affordable and reasonable. The Twins do need a starter to replace Sonny Gray. However, my first choice would be to re-sign Gray to a 3 year contract for $63 million. He probably will be offered more by other teams, however his age makes a 3 year contract risky.
  4. I can't get into this conversation yet. I am still grieving the loss of my all time favorite sports announcer, Dick Bremer. He was simply the best in my opinion. I wish him well in the future.
  5. I will miss watching Twins' baseball games with my friend, Dick Bremer. Thanks for the memories, my friend.
  6. Moo, moo, moove him to the bullpen.
  7. By the time he finishes coming off of surgery, the resulting therapy, builds his arm strength up, works out two months at Driveline pitching academy, pitches his tight innings limits and trial runs, gets stretched out without any innings limits, gets all the rust shaken off, gets sent up and down a half dozen times to and from AAA to the big leagues, and then adds a sweeper to his repertoire, he will be 34 years old and ready for a one year trial contract with performance incentives as a big league journeyman reliever with the Las Vegas Padres.
  8. $215 million divided by 30 is a little over $7 million, assuming that is the Twins' share. Hardly offsets losing $55 million, but it's a start.
  9. Nick, I wonder how the uncertainty regarding the tv deal affected the decision by Dick Bremer and/or the Twins for the beloved 40 year veteran announcer, to stop announcing the Twins' tv games. Was it merely coincidentally that "his decision" to retire, came at the same time as the tv contract also "retired"? I realize most of us chose to retire at some point in our 60's or 70's. I would be interested in your thoughts.
  10. I have enjoyed watching over a thousand Twins games with my friend, Dick. I looked forward to our visits. He is a kind, gregarious, entertaining friend with lots of baseball wisdom. His well written book spoke volumes about his excellent life values. I will really miss his company. He has become a good friend. Best wishes to you my friend. If you are ever in North Carolina, look me up. You can find me on Google and Facebook. I know where there are some largemouth bass just waiting to meet you. Thanks for the memories. David Benbow, Statesville, NC
  11. Taylor would probably be a positive asset for CF for the Twins for at least 2024. We pay for insurance policies but hope we won't need to collect them. Try to re-sign Taylor for 2024.
  12. Give Miranda a chance to redeem himself first. There is really little need to replace Solano with players who are outside the Twins organization. There are enough players already available.
  13. Looks like the Twins drafted a talented 18 year old who is driven to succeed. He appears to be saying all the right things. He can talk the talk. I sincerely believe he will also walk the walk.
  14. I really enjoyed Donnie Barrels this past year. He set personal records. Next year, I hope he does as well or better, but that is not a chance I would want the Twins to take. In addition the Twins have too many other, younger, faster, more powerful and frankly, better defensive players, already available in the organization. The odds are against Solano returning to the Twins in 2024.
  15. I looked up stats for Walter Johnson, Sam Rice, Goose Goslin, Bucky Harris, Cecil Travis, Joe Cronin and last but not least, Heinie Manush, all Washington Senators Hall of Famers. I know Killebrew, Oliva and Kaat played for the Senators before they were Twins. I would substitute Walter "The Big Train" Johnson for Jack, "One Year Twins' Wonder" aka, the winning pitcher of the greatest World Series game ever played, Morris). I would chose Camilio "Little Potato" Pascual , who pitched for the pitiful Senators and the rising Twins, instead of Frank Viola. Pascual had one of the the best curves in baseball. Earl Battey would be my second catcher. He was a class act. I did not give much weight to former Senator's catchers, Muddy Ruel or Clint "Scrap Iron" Courtney, but I considered them. I would put Roy Sievers in LF, followed by Shane Mack as a defensive substitute in LF. I would not put Chuck Knoblach on my team, just because I did not like his persona and would let Rod Carew play ever inning of every game. However if Carew were hurt or needed a rest, I would put Brian Dozier at 2B. Thanks for mentioning the old Washington Senators, JD. They were my boy-hood team, that led me to be a life-long Twins' fan, when they left my birthplace of Washington, DC. The Washington Senators were "First in War, First in Peace, and Last in the American League."
  16. If I were the Twins, I would absolutely do something substantial to reward Duran. Seth's proposal looks to be well thought out and would be a guaranteed, life changing contract for Duran, no matter what, and reasonable for the Twins, considering the potential risks. Nice job Seth.
  17. Thank you, Peter for putting this article and the videos together. I had so much fun watching each one. It is hard to pick a favorite one. I'm glad you included Joey Gallo's HR. Gallo seems like a flawed character in a novel or a play, who can't control a bad habit or addiction (strikeouts), but every now and then, has momentary success..he hits long homeruns, and lives happily ever after. I wish him well in the future chapters of his life, be it playing baseball, or retiring from baseball so he can teach and/or spend more time with his family, enjoying the 10's of millions of dollars he has earned by playing baseball.
  18. Great job Cody. I am so glad I don't have to make these decisions.
  19. I was very upset when the Twins traded Petty for Gray. I was wrong. The FO deserves praise for this trade.
  20. Great retirement announcement. Retirement comes to most of us...if we are lucky. It is nothing to fear. It brings new opportunities to serve others, to laugh, to love and to enjoy this one life each of us has been given. Thanks for the memories Trevor. Now go make some new memories.
  21. What an awesome man-cave. Tell your son, "Welcome to North Carolina". He can still be a huge Twins' fan here in North Carolina. I am. Charlotte was a Senators/Twins minor league team for decades. Unfortunately, the Charlotte franchise has now gone over to the dark side (White Sox). Mark Davidson ('87 Twins) played at Clemson and UNC-Charlotte and resided in my hometown of Statesville, NC for years. Bailey Ober is from Huntersville, NC and Ryan Jeffers attended UNC-Wilmington and lives in Raleigh. Don't let your son forget Twins top prospect (or #2 prospect) Walker Jenkins is from Southport, NC. I need to form a North Carolina Twins fan club. Our fight song would be: "We're Gonna Win Twins, Ya'll"
  22. Really nice article which explains the most pressing offseason needs as they exist today. I look forward to the forthcoming offseason detailed TD articles and comments about each of these pressing needs. Pros and cons. Lots of variables. Interesting stuff. Thanks Nick.
  23. Difficult decisions to be made. I have confidence this FO will make the correct decisions. I hate to see any of these players go, but it is as inevitable as death and taxes.
