  1. One thing Baldelli said was yes he was going to pinch hit for Odorizzi after the fourth, but the pitcher spot didn’t come up. But they could have done a double switch with Schoop and Gonzales leading off the next inning in the pitcher spot. I watched the game. I haven’t been as disappointed in a starting pitcher as last night.
  2. Garver looks so much better blocking pitches in his new stance. Night and day. (Though I missed the last couple innings where a ball or two got past him.)
  3. Five things ... If only there were a game thread tonight.
  4. By that reasoning of the B lineup, maybe Cruz should have been in the outfield, then? Not sure how you come down on that issue of Cruz not playing in NL parks.
  5. Great game. Great call (by Shelton! apparently) to have Rosario already double switched into the pitcher spot. Except for those 8th inning fluke dribblers just out of the grasp of Rogers and Astudillo, except for those, I thought the Twins really executed defensively.
  6. It would be a short sample of games. It’s fair to disagree on this. Though I am surprised the team is deciding it this way, considering how well Cruz is hitting.
  7. I’m not questioning why he isn’t a full time outfielder anymore. I’m comfortable saying Cruz’s bat+defense is better than Cave’s in a short span of games. They apparently prefer Cave’s platoon advantage instead. We will soon find out. To take it one step further, I might also use Kepler in center and Buxton on the bench as a late inning replacement for Cruz in these NL parks.
  8. Cruz is absolutely mashing right now. Why give him just one AB as a pinch hitter when you can give him four? Also to your point, Cruz got good reviews in the outfield in spring training. We have a strikeout pitcher going today.
  9. Cave in LF, not Cruz today. Interesting call if Cruz is going to sit on the bench until next Friday.
  10. Agree, three mostly poor games in a row. Time to play a good one.
  11. The one-inning performance from the starter had quite a domino effect. If Philly had a scheduled off day Monday, I’m sure this game would have been postponed. But today looks good and I assume we’ll see Astudillo catching and Cruz and Buxton in the OF
  12. It should be interesting. I have been hard on Castro in the past but as long as he’s co-authoring complete game shutouts, he can hit whatever he wants. I do expect him to revert back to his mid 600 OPS and to be pinch hit for many times late in games. Which might necessitate carrying all three catchers for long stretches. Not sure; we shall see, this could be a fun ride (at least until the first time a team hangs 16 on us)
  13. So much went right today it would be hard to list everything. Astudillo hitting and backing up that throw, Buxton's big two-out double, Cruz hitting as advertised, Schoop, Cron and Kepler finally hitting. Pineda's pitching, even Perez went out with a game plan to pitch high and inside, was very consistent doing that, though he was still missing that high inside corner. Marwin Gonzalez being aggressive and going to third when the Cleveland left fielder (left handed) took a wide route to that ball hit near the line.
  14. The Twins wrote the exact same lineup (except catchers) all three games. That's impressive and shows confidence. Traditionally, we would have seen a "getaway" Sunday lineup today, considering how the starters struggled the first two games and the perceived importance of getting bench guys into the actions. Turns out, bench guys got into the game anyway.
  15. I don't really see anything to second guess yesterday. We gave them a run in the ninth, and they tried to give it back, but we didn't get it across.
  16. Not sure how much of that was Castro being really good at his job back there, umpire waking up on the Twins side of the bed, or a “reputational shift” acknowledging Berrios as one of the top pitchers now in MLB and giving him the calls. Probably a little (or a lot) of each, and let’s hope it keeps on going!
  17. First off, great article. But, if “everyone is turning heel” as you say, then that would include Romero. So some might be curious to know if Romero was struggling because of a new delivery, and if he was optioned down in order to get the feel back in his old one. Just some questions, and I admit that bringing up Romero’s struggles might be making a mountain out of a molehill, not to mention outside the scope of your story.
  18. eine kleine nachtmusik? http://www.hittingdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Kepler20160801HR1.gif
  19. What does Tyler Wells gotta do to get some recognition—kill Superman?
  20. Pretty candid comments by Garver. I like him as a third catcher with options at this point. (I think he still has at least one option year left?) I think framing is just one of his deficiencies and it would be tough to improve from 4th worst to middle of the pack when everyone else is also trying to improve in that area.
  21. jimbo also pointed out in a game thread once that Kepler is a front-of-foot runner — much less susceptible to a running injury that way (though I’m sure there’s research that shows the opposite). Try running barefoot and see what your body tells you. I’m on board. Very athletic guy sitting on a big year, I hope. However, I will miss how Kepler used to do that little dance step when catching easy fly balls. I think they coached that out of him.
  22. You sure that wasn't a type of beverage you had nearby, and not catch percentage?
