    Meh, I'd probably have Sano in this 11-15 block, though probably closer to 11. He is what he is, which is ok, could be great, but probably not. I think most the other starters with team control plus some pitchers are just as valuable at this point.

    Understood why Dozier was left out. He's certainly an interesting case, and maybe that long-ish period he spent in A+ was what was best for him, whether he was coached or taught something new or just left to his own abilities.

    Good analysis. I will pose two follow-ups: 1. What would you conclude after applying the test above to Brian Dozier? 2. By saying “not knowing the strike zone” are you also saying “strikes out too much,” or, could there be a distinction between those two things?

    I disagree with you - this is a good signing. But I do agree it behooves them to proactively beef up their pitching staff a little more now.

    This would also be the thread to point out that the long time Blue Jays GM Pat Gillick was nicknamed "Stand Pat," for not making offseason moves despite having moderately successful teams. When he did start making big offseason moves, the team won two World Series.

    Great post. Wish it would have been higher in the thread. Reading Dice K's wiki page said the baseballs in Japan are a little smaller. That might concern me if Kikuchi is unable to find the grip on the MLB baseball. Eventually he would but at what cost.

    Yes, they are kicking the can down the road, until Lewis is shortstop. The $100+ million payrolls are a thing of the past. If they can win in the meantime, payroll won’t matter, but that is to be determined. The present core certainly has the talent.

    Levine's candidness is appreciated by some of us who were stunned and caught completely off guard by one of the signings in particular. There must have been people in the org waving the red flag but they went ahead anyway. So there's some vindication there at least. On the other hand, Schoop seems like a pretty good guy and student of the game (other than his playing Robin to Machado's Batman in Baltimore).

    If I recall, the guy representing Pittsburgh rep was working against Sano's interests behind the scenes, planting doubt about Sano's age, to scare off the rest of the MLB team reps. All while telling Sano he was his champion to his face. But the Twins and one other team stuck with Sano the whole way as Sano lost trust in signing with Pittsburgh.

    Rosario seems to often lose focus in a lost situation (a losing game, or the second half of last year) which yes speaks to a lack of discipline. He's also our best player. Should have been an All Star last year. He's matured as a hitter from his first two seasons, and he's entering his peak years. He's a free swinger, as Oliva and Puckett were. In the context of this thread, he's the least of our worries, so yes, he gets a pass from me.

    The coaching moves are interesting, given at least two coaches hired by Falvey & Levine (Alston, Pickler) have already moved on. Not necessarily a bad thing, but would be interesting to know the meaning. I give the front office about a 1:3 chance of doing a big move just to do a move, and getting the typical praise and criticism (me) for it, regardless of its merits Otherwise I will again predict a quiet and frugal offseason.

    9 million for what Odorizzi provides is a question mark edit: like the above poster, I do like him. If he's tendered I think we'll see him used a little differently than last year (his third time through the order is terrible, but he also had some rough first innings too)

    You make a reasonable point about Rooker not contributing in 2019. However I can't quite reconcile that he will both 1. not be part of the calculus in 2019, but 2. the Twins will nevertheless know his fate by the end of 2019. I'd put his odds at greater than 50/50 that he debuts in 2019 (assuming good health, etc).

    True, it's reasonable to not count on Rooker much at all, let alone to start the season. But he's 24 and in the high minors so I'd be surprised if we didn't see him at some point. And maybe not at first base, maybe I'm being optimistic.

    I feel the opposite about first base. I think they have plenty of coverage. I was fine with Tyler Austin, some Sano, with Rooker getting a call-up and maybe Kepler getting time there in platoon situations. Picking up this new guy just seems redundant, unless they plan to move one of the above guys.

    Yes that's another thing I don't understand about this pick-up. Although Rooker does have a tiny bit more flexibility to play the outfield* *not sure how good he actually is at either position

    Actually, his World Series at bats weren't that bad overall, despite not getting a hit. He's past his peak and by the end was a role player for the Dodgers. Yes, he was streaky with the Twins, but actually played his best ball after signing an extension. Anyway, this is not the thread for that and I was responding to a comment of yours that required a response. I was playing by your rules: "Shine the spotlight on him and he falls to pieces." So I used the high viewership examples of the All Star game and playoffs.

    Nonsense. He homered in the All Star game, and he homered in his first post-season at bat, in the wild card game.
