    I'm not disagreeing with you or the other poster that Pittsburgh got a better (ahem, significantly better) return from Houston than whatever Minnesota was thought to be offering or willing to offer. The conversation for Cole never really took off here, not sure why not, since he was obviously available. I'd like to see the Twins play in this trade market, and frankly I'm surprised they haven't yet. Kirilloff, Larnach, Rooker, probably each of them could headline a trade for major league talent. The chances of all three making it are slim.

    In the Gerrit Cole example, the prospects mentioned were not "low-value" a year ago, and Pittsburgh was looking to shed salary. This was a specific situation. It looks lopsided to you in hindsight, but a year ago, it looked a little more equal. To your statement that the Twins fan's "main conceit ... is that if the Twins were just smarter, they could convert low-value minor leaguers into quality major leaguers" -- that is exactly what they did with Palacios and Odorizzi.

    It's possible. It's also possible that they are just very conservative with prospects, like the previous FO, and aren't pursuing trade talks like these. Hard to know. I doubt they "ran the numbers" and thought the offer wasn't any good. It's frustrating to me that they aren't playing in this particular trade market. It's my feeling (without any data) that it's ultimately going to be to their detriment to forego opportunities like those.

    Well that's the thing. There's no way of knowing for sure. Maybe when Thad Levine's tell-all memoir comes out, another 20-30 years from now.

    I too am a sucker for pinstripes. I don't mind any of the uniforms, though I am least enamored with the gold trim letters on white tops. I don't know if they have been mercifully retired, but I haven't seen them for a couple seasons in any case. Gold trim letters on blue tops (Baldelli) I think are fine but look a little busy. I also happen to love love love the red tops. Erv Santana always selected those when he was pitching at home. I don't remember the Knoblauch red tops of the 90s much at all. Also great selection of photos! Radke pitching in Yankee stadium? I wonder if that was his near-perfect game in 1997.

    I've got to side with poster Tomj14 on this one. A year ago, there was a credible report that the Pirates were asking Gordon, Gonsalves and Zack Granite for Gerrit Cole. That's when those prospects still had some sparkle. That's what we are talking about. Moreover, regardless of Gordon's development or future here in Minnesota, there is a franchise cornerstone coming up the minors right behind him at the same position.

    It does not describe Falvey the person, but in my opinion it describes Twins baseball operations to a T. Example: Here's where "fear of failure" resonates with me: being 7 games out of first on July 27, at a critical moment when your team might be starting to gel, and then deciding to be sellers and trading your players instead. Would the Twins have overtaken Cleveland? Possible, but not likely. But possible. Fear of failing to catch Cleveland and not getting anything in return for guys entering free agency. Not everyone agrees that trading those guys was bad. I understand that. By the way, Milwaukee was 6 games out of first on August 28. That ground can be made up. Cruz was a great signing, the others maybe prudent, maybe not. We will have to watch and see.

    I read the same thing and had the same reaction. I'm a fan; I wanted to read the spin there. Now I wonder if the converse of that statement isn't also true: if things don't come together this year, will ownership provide even less "flexibility" in 2020?

    Posnanski nailed it. What Needham (and plenty of others) have questioned is this: Should Rivera as a closer be the first to be unanimous? One answer to that question is no, of course he shouldn’t be first. As stated: Ty Cobb should have been first. Joe DiMaggio should have been first. Ted Williams … Stan Musial … Willie Mays … Henry Aaron … Jackie Robinson … Tom Seaver … Cal Ripken … Greg Maddux … Ken Griffey … all of those guys and more should have been first. But they weren’t. And there’s no going back to get any of that right. Rivera did his job better than anyone in baseball history. He has the best ERA+ of any pitcher in baseball history. He has the most saves, if you care about saves. He’s fifth all-time in Win Probability added — right between Warren Spahn and Tom Seaver — and his postseason pitching record is an absurdity, 141 innings, a 0.759 WHIP, a 0.70 ERA, and so on. Is his Hall of Fame case as good as Maddux’s? As Seaver’s? As Johnson’s? As Martinez’s? As Gibson’s? No, not to me. But maybe it’s better to think of it this way: Nobody closed out a game better. Nobody.     Falvey and Levine inherited an internal core that won 85 games in 2017. They didn't build on it. They thought they did, but they didn't. You have confidence that they have a plan. I agree. I am also confident that they have a plan. I am curious to hear what you think their plan is though.

    The Twins could have signed Cody Allen for just a few million more than they spent signing Martin Perez and Blake Parker. Allen has a long history of getting high leverage outs.

    Who's left? Kimbrel? Like I said, Cody Allen signed not too long ago for not much more than we signed this guy.

    Not counting incentives, the Twins signed Blake Parker and Martin Perez for $5 million. Cody Allen signed for $8.5 million. Would people rather have Parker and Perez and $3.5 million salary in the Twins pocket, or spend another $3.5 million (and slightly more to top the Angels offer) and sign Cody Allen and then have that extra roster spot?

    The interesting thing about Allen is that he shot through the Cleveland system in a hurry, despite being drafted after the 20th round, and was lights-out pretty much from his MLB debut. I think that’s been an underreported story since Falvey came over from Cleveland — how was a late selection like Allen able to have such success like that. Like, who were the 10th-20th round picks ahead of him? I’d prefer the Twins find and develop their own Cody Allen, though the real Allen would work, too. Falvey must have a gut feeling about the guy. At some point he will need to set aside the sophisticated models and go with his gut on something. I don’t know if that’s Cody Allen or not.

    I was actually leaning against the Cody Allen idea until I went down the rabbit hole (again) of salary and revenue. One article cited how a team like Cleveland spent money after opening a new stadium and had a nice run of success (if not an actual championship), while other teams like Pittsburgh and Milwaukee just kept new stadium revenues in ownership’s pocket, and failed to see meaningful improvement on the field. I think Pohlad would want to be in that first group. As someone up thread said, if the Twins have a 2/20+ offer to Allen, I think that’s pretty reasonable, even if Allen signs for a little more. A 2/20 contract to Allen would destroy my narrative that Pohlad is refusing to go higher than $99 million in payroll this year, but it will make the team better for sure #tradeoffs

    Whatever they plan to do, I'd like to see it get wrapped up soon. Last year, too much of the nucleus was added after the players were already in Ft. Myers. I think any big additions should be made before Twins Fest so that the players can come to Minneapolis and mingle, meet their teammates off the field, establish some esprit de corps. Just my opinion.

    Seems like a lot of work to actually sit down on a call and pound out minor incentives like that. I'd say, nah thanks. But maybe the FO let an intern do it, for the experience.

    Fair enough. Identifying the right guy is only half the battle. I'd rather see them add to the top of the rotation, or do something impactful with the young pitchers with options they already have. If that means a stacker or opener/primary, so be it (if it works ). They must have enough data on their pitchers by now to exploit certain matchups and put them in better spots for them to succeed.

    Fair enough. I can't disagree with any of that, really. I guess I'd rather see them add to the top or middle of the rotation, and push everyone else down a spot, than add another guy to compete for the back end.
