    MLB would have benefitted from an impartial commissioner these past years. Vegas should not be a big stakeholder in this.

    Agree completely. Also I’d say MLB is losing its way. Hopefully Baldelli at least posts the lineup in the clubhouse for the players somewhere if they choose to see it, before he sends it to the gambling syndicates

    As far as I'm concerned, it's about 4 PM the next day, the prince never came back, and we're all getting on with our lives. Tough luck for those guys playing chicken with free agency, and losing. As for the Twins, if the Twins wanted either of them, they should have paid x price during the offseason, rather than hoping to get a less ready player for less the price at a much later date.

    Great post, SDT I come down on the side of the players, but on the other hand I'm really not interested in seeing veterans making mega-deal money in their decline years. The Pujols contract comes to mind. He doesn't even pretend to run anymore, barely jogging from base to base. Sure he earned it, but look at him now. It's not good for baseball. I don't know. The market may be self-correcting as we are seeing Keuchel and Kimbrel not being offered long deals? The idea I hadn't heard but really, really like, is the top draft pick going to the team that just misses the postseason. It would be really, tough to game that or tank for that that way. You could alternate the draft order something like: 1 - Final team eliminated for postseason 2 - worst record 3 - second-final team eliminated for postseason 4 - second worst record, 5 - third-final team eliminated for postseason, and so on, until the postseason teams draft. Really love that and wonder why it hasn't been mentioned much before.

    Granite was a player Pittsburgh was rumored to be interested in, when they were shopping Gerrit Cole last off-season.

    Runners in scoring position is not quite the same thing as critical situations (or LI). I once did a semi-deep dive on Castro’s 2017 situational hitting and I agree with the other poster. However, I’m still good with Castro as a starter in 2019.

    Those PA look like the players’ upper bounds, especially for Sano, but otherwise looks pretty close. I also think the Twins break camp with 12 or only 11 pitchers, though that doesn’t really create extra PAs.

    Maybe, but I think it might be more complicated than that. Maybe they left the decision to Molitor, and Molitor preferred Wilson. Molitor wouldn’t use Astudillo at all behind the plate when Astudillo finally did get his call up. Not to single out Molitor— other orgs didn’t give him an MLB shot either, but then, he’s only 27 now and not exactly over the hill. Someone mentioned in another thread that the team thinks his catching skills are at least average, which puts him ahead of Garver.

    “Were [Astudillo] to accumulate enough starts at catcher, he'd likely rank among the league's best hitters at the position.” Great win for the organization finding this guy and bringing him in. Maybe it’s time to consider Astudillo the best catcher on the team, better overall than Castro and almost certainly better than Garver?

    More and more, I am thinking the Gonzalez signing is a Plan B for third base, for the reasons spycake is laying out. I wouldn't expect many people to think Sano will play more than 80-100 games in the field. He is too susceptible to injury and slump. Gonzalez might also be a mid-game substitution quite a bit when Sano does start (though not necessarily subbing for Sano).

    I'm trying to figure out how these guys fit, and I think there's a chance Garver starts in AAA, Astudillo being the better receiver. Also I think the Twins carry only 12 pitchers for the season's start. Maybe even 11 with the off days they have. They will also need cut at least one of the guys they just signed this offseason. Not a bad thing, necessarily. All seems a little weird to me. We'll see.

    Hello - I answered upthread, but it reminds me of last offseason in the sense that they are signing players who expected bigger contracts at a discount after camp has started. Falvey said it was a mistake to do that last offseason, yet here we go again. I don't mind Gonzalez, he just seems redundant. Or if Gonzalez is the guy, then these other pickups (Cron, Schoop) seem redundant.

    Ok, people answering this question with: "all over the diamond." That's fine, but it kind of throws a few other signings into question, like the Schoop signing.

    I'm thinking in terms of signing guys late in the offseason for cheap contracts who had been expecting bigger contracts. That is Marwin Gonzalez to a T. And honest question, where is Gonzalez going to play? This 2/21 seems steep for a bench guy when Astudillo is making near minimum

    All true, I just prefer to see these extensions as the team and the player believing in each other. In the unlikely event Gordon ever "forces the issue" on Polanco, it will mean Gordon has trade value again, and can be traded just as well as Polanco. By the way, good job using Gordon and Lewis in the same sentence. I like these extensions the more I think about it. Contractually they are not earth shattering, but I think it speaks to a vision and commitment.

    I see this extension more as the front office articulating a vision of their middle infield, Polanco and Lewis, and the more I think about it, the more I like it. It makes sense for posters to bring up Gordon's future or lack of future with the team in this thread.
