  1. This is absolutely a PR hit. Morneau was one of the critical pieces of the Twins success in the last decade. This has been his only organization. He wanted to sign an extension with the Twins but Terry Ryan wasn't interested. Morneau knows he's at the end and willing to take a pay cut. Morneau and Mauer were best buds. Without Morneau, there likely would not have been the championships. "We believe in continuity and stability and loyalty," Ryan said. "The Pohlad family has always believed in that approach." That's what Ryan said in the Pioneer Press in July. Now, Ryan trades one of the greatest Twins ever for a minor league outfielder.
  2. Here's my take on a 2014 Opening Day lineup, something between what I realistically think it could be and what I wish it would be: Batting order: 8 Hicks 4 Dozier 5 Mauer DH Willingham 3 Morneau 7 Arcia 9 Parmelee 2 Herrmann 6 Florimon OF Clete Thomas IF Util Doumit I think Morneau still has the fire but is maybe out of tread. He'll be on 1-yr deals until he retires and maybe that comes in a couple years with Mauer moving to first when Sano is ready. Mauer needs to move from behind the plate asap but maybe catch once a week to make him happy. Plouffe I'm sure is a nice guy but needs to go far away from here. Pitching 1. Free Agent 2. Gibson 3. Diamond/Deduno 4. 5. Swarzak, Albers, Worley, etc closwr Perkins I'm convinced the Twins already have the arms to build a solid staff, they just need some coaching to guide them at the big league level. I don't envision Gardenhire and his boys managing here again next year. Detroit will still be the class of the AL Central but quick turnarounds can happen!
  3. Mr. Brooks, I liked your example of Hicks. He was highly regarded, highly hyped, but then fell on his face. There's no rule that says all rookies must struggle. Maybe the Brunansky-Hicks relationship never got off the ground, and maybe Hicks cant stand Bruno or Bruno can't get through to Hicks, and if that's true, then I guess the Twins need to decide who they have more invested in, Hicks or Brunansky. Same with Gibson and Rick Anderson. Same with other examples. You can express it more diplomatically than I and I will get a little heated, but I guess I don't feel scandalized when people speculate on bringing in new coaches to try turning the team around.
  4. Yes, Brunansky's job security should be called into question. But I would think most people are drumming their fingers waiting for Ryan to fire Gardenhire, or Pohlad to fire Ryan (or Gardenhire to fire Ryan) or whatever. Not sure about these fans who are so inured to mediocrity that they get offended -- after three consecutive 90-loss seasons -- when someone suggests firing a coach. The "blame the players" mentality fostered by the coaches, FO and Media is disturbing. Look at the vitriol aimed at Mauer, an MVP and three time batting champion not to mention fine defensively (if not the greatest handler of pitchers) -- there's your unintended secondary effect of the "our players are horrible" media campaign. True, are current guys are not the greatest, but they deserve better leadership. Dozier is a good story but the overall record is pretty cut and dried. As for Brunansky, we traded him in 1988, which was a bit of a shock, but I remember TK telling the media afterward that "we're not getting through to that guy, have you seen him? doesn't think he has a job to do anymore", that's essentially what TK said after Brunansky was traded. The Twins don't "owe" him a couple more years to teach our players his "system" nor do we need to keep Steinbach around either "just because he's Steinbach" -- to Rosterman's question I say Clean house.
  5. What do you suppose is Bruno's WAR as a hitting coach?
  6. Thanks for the "Benard" tweets -- hadn't seen those. I agree the Justin/Joe one takes the cake. There was also the Jacque Jones Torii Hunter bromance, the Matt Garza bromance with himself, and going back to the 90s, Marty Cordova and the tanning bed. But... how could you forget that Slowey and Dickey climbed Mt Kilimanjaro together in January 2012!!?
  7. For me, I just think Lohse's been gone so long and isn't the Radke type of guy to begin with, who you'd see making a long career with the one team who brought him up. I'd throw Garza in that group too - Garza wouldn't still be a Twin at this point.
  8. I will agree that Lohse doesn't impress me as being a great example of a cudgel to pound over Rick Anderson's head. The capable seasons you mentioned, plus he's just been gone a long time now (oh, and just another ex-Twin with a World Series ring - yawn - so there's good reason why people point to Lohse a lot. But to my mind "Andy's" record still does not look good, Liriano included.
  9. I'd just like to see a plan. Anything. We've been "wingin it" for too long with the 9 dimensional chess game of Doumit behind the plate tomorrow because Herrmann can play right if Mauer needs a day off at first base... Here would be one plan: Mauer catches the pitcher he works best with (once every 5 days) , another guy who works well with pitchers (Butera? Herrmann?) catches the rest of the time, with the third guy as utility/emergency.
  10. The lack of field presence we see in Twins players (and coaches) nowadays is disturbing. I agree because there is nothing preventing Gardenhire himself from bounding to the top step of the dugout and shouting COVER HOME COVER HOME which would probably have gotten the Thielbar's attention. Gardenhire's too often just a spectator anymore, leaning forward against that fence block, his arms hung over the rail, unengaged, he had his day and deep down I wonder if he wants a break from this and I'd say the Twins organization and fan base could definitely use a break. HBD
  11. The Dickey example is legit - a knuckleballer who the Twins used as a situational reliever. On top of that, Gardenhire started out by telling him not to throw his knuckleball in critical situations so that Joe wouldnt have to chase any passed balls. The Mets needed innings (like the Twins did) they signed a rubber arm like Dickey, let him start, and got several good years from him. Another example, one you will never see anywhere, is Phil Humber. In 2008-2009 Patrick Reusse called him the very worst pitcher on a major league roster. But in 2011 Don Cooper somehow got almost an entire good season out of him, 9-9, 3.75 ERA. Yeah Humber regressed, but so does every pitcher on the Twins roster if they hang around long enough -- the "blame the players" philosophy that the Twins more and more resort to is unfortunate I think we can all agree.
