  1. Thank you for your work tracking this guy - this was a smart trade that's looking smarter and smarter. And not that it needs to be pointed out any more, but… a television interview with a minor leaguer, from the dugout, in the middle of a game? Is this recent? We are living in different times indeed.
  2. The big tell will be who Morneau signs with for '14. (No doubt it won't be for much) But I will bet you a soda it's not the Twins.
  3. Reading through the comments, I also think we are at risk of overstating the Loyalty factor of this organization. Some of us will remember a big first baseman named Justin Morneau who played his whole career here, all-star, hugely popular, and wanted to retire in a Twins uniform. GM waived and traded him for a minor league outfielder as I recall.
  4. Very good reporting. As an aside, I've got to say this explains the Ryan Doumit 2 year extension mystery.. Now I'm a Doumit guy for sure, he has a place in the majors some where, but I just couldn't understand what the Twins were going to do with him. So reading this article, I'm seeing a degree of "scratch my back" going on in this instance, money poorly spent. But nice work shedding light on a smaller agency.
  5. I thought maybe Billy Beane but nope.. Not Randy Bush either.. Al Newman?
  6. My impression was that our middle infield was greater than the sum of its parts in the field. Both of those guys also have some speed and some pop and some say Dozier/will can be a 270 hitter. Which granted, has nothing to do with a hypothetical trade for Shelby Miller.
  7. Funny you asked, because I was just re-reading some passages from Moneyball yesterday, and according to Michael Lewis...
  8. Fine but how much "full responsibility" are you willing to take on??
  9. Ok then.. maybe I'm just being hyper sensitive to the "blame the players, blame the fans" narrative. Apologies Brock. Side note being that IMO Terry Ryan needs to forget about calling up Alex Meyer until he can get either Gibson or Diamond straightened out and pitching well again.
  10. The suggestion being that Ryan called up Gibson mostly because the rubes were clamoring for him?
  11. Very nice :-) I have said "I do" to the Twins ever since I've been old enough to listen to dad's old transistor radio. At the moment the Twins and I are deep into a nasty quarrel. I remember helping him with a big yard project one beautiful summer afternoon -- this was way way back in the day, of course -- and I was motivated mostly because we'd have the Twins game on. I think they might have been playing Oakland. Well they immediately batted around on us and the Twins fell behind like 11-0 in the first couple innings...
  12. There are Gardy fans, and then there are Gardy fans. I'll take the rings.
  13. Yes, soon would be 1 or 2 years, which is lightning speed by Twins standards. I was on the losing side of the Gardenhire debate. To some of us, it was inconceivable that the status quo prevailed. So if nothing else the Molitor hire at least throws us a bone - and apparently Trevor Plouffe agrees It could very well be just a PR move. If the Twins honestly get some guys turned around and we win some games, I'll be fine with the coaches coming back for 2015.
  14. Everything Terry Ryan says begs for a reading between the lines.
  15. It could be. If so, Molitor got suckered. There's nothing in it for Molitor at this point in his career to be a "baserunning" coach. All the circumstantial evidence points to a changing of the guard soon to come.
  16. I agree -- we now know who the next manager will be. We just don't know when. It really is an interesting dynamic. I've never heard a shred of evidence that Gardenhire wants to leave this job and I wouldn't say Molitor is a member of the "boys club" because if he was, Gardy would have recommended him for a bench coach job by now. My guess is the Molitor hire was directed from the upper reaches of ownership and is a clear signal that the clock is ticking on the status quo.
  17. This is nothing but good news - someone with a different perspective who might be part of the rebuilding plan.
  18. I come to these boards to be entertained sometimes. I love reading people completely dismissing the idea of retiring Radke's number. Radke's numbers stand up well to Kaat and Blyleven. Radke was the shining light of the late 1990s. Radke never said the word "me" in his entire career - can't say that about Bert. In his final season Radke basically pitched with a broken arm during the long stretch drive (we put guys on the DL for 'fatigue' now). Evaluating guys for these things is more than looking at the sum total of their statistics. I'd say go for it.
  19. Nice to read - thank you for sharing
  20. I go either way on Pelfrey and his 2.1 WAR. Perkins had 36 saves in 40 save opportunities in 2013 Perkins also had a 1.7 WAR (wins above replacement). therefore, any other bullpen guy or chump off the street coulda come in and saved 34 out of 40 games last year, am I understanding that correctly?
  21. Fair enough. Cuddyer was certainly a chipper guy and the guy who would look you in the eye as he walked by, and make sure you were having a good day, and yeah maybe spout the company line like Gardenhire would. But I wouldn't say Cuddyer and Gardenhire were two peas in a pod- just the opposite probably.
  22. Curious, but what is the basis for thinking that ? I agree with everything except the "parrot" thing which in my opinion is pretty far off base, and wondering what has led people to believe that about him. Just to tie the question back to the original thread, I believe that Cuddyer might have been the last guy to play here with any sort of charisma and a Cuddyer-Mauer-Morneau clubhouse would have been a perfect environment for bringing up these new guys and turning them into ballplayers.

  24. Again, the Mauer situation is a hot steaming mess. Trading or retiring him is out of the question. Playing him at catcher is suspect, since you are both putting him at further concussion risk and taking away development opportunities from others. Putting him at first decreases his statistical value though that doesn't bother me per se, but seems to bother others. I have said he belonged at third since Valencia left (and go forward with M&M at the corners) but apparently we're going to give the Plouffe experiment infinite time (more free advice ignored!). No good answers. The fact that the field manager or front office doesn't even know what to do with him tells you everything you need to know about this organization's incompetence and they will find a way to squander his best remaining years. I am not a blame the players guy. I'm a huge Mauer guy. The Twins just have no plan for him anymore and they don't have the stomach to make a decision and go with it. It's just all a huge mess.
  25. I'd argue Molina and Posey have been much more valuable to ther teams in recent years.. but I ask you how does Mauer fit with what the Twins are doing?
