  1. How would you rate Herrmann and Pinto as far as pitch calling and the pitcher-catcher relationship?
  2. Fair enough, and I did not dig for details prior that post, but the Morris signing definitely passed the WOW! test at the time, if not for his stats (but those too) then at least for his competitiveness and you banked on him pitching every fifth day. ...and it's always nice to read old quotes from Patrick Reusse, the eternal optimist.
  3. I think it's ok to include the 87 and 91 teams as part of one sustained run. More up and down seasons in that stretch, but it was the same core group of guys who put together the fun 1984 run and several of the clutch guys were part of the 87 and 91 teams (Gagne, Gladden, in addition to Puckett and Hrbek). Signing a big name free agent pitcher is what put us over the top in 1991 -- go figure!
  4. Not sure why its controversial to fire an underperforming manager.
  5. Larry Dierker came directly from the broadcast booth to lead the Astros so having no coaching experience is not unheard of... and I think there's still Molitor love left over from 2001-2002 when TK stepped down and Molitor and Gardenhire were considered to be the front runners. Also, Sid Hartman -- leave it to Sid -- made a pretty blunt statement about a month ago that Dave St. Peter wants Molitor to manage (I'm sure that eased the tension in the front office).
  6. People who listen regularly to the radio broadcasts of games and the complementary radio programming will have heard some really petty back-and-forths between Mauer and Gardy about why or why not Mauer was in the lineup after his Bilateral leg weakness. Mauer saying he was sore, Gardy giving him day off, Mauer coming back and saying yeah he was sore but still wanted to play, Gardy saying he let's Joe tell him what to do, etc. So when I read the "irritability" story, that whole backstory came to mind. Maybe concussion symptoms but hard for me to take Terry Ryan at face value after what he said about the Scott Baker injury. Also what an earlier poster in this thread said about having two young newborns and lack of sleep could make a guy irritable
  7. I'm not sure how to read it. True, the concussion is a critical fact but don't overlook that Mauer and Gardenhire have an unflattering years-long history of back and forth bickering about whether Gardenhire was going to write Joe into the lineup on any particular day. A minor story, but I do think it's news that the GM and manager told the media that the team's mild-mannered star player was so irritable that he was excused from the park -- sure does violate the "keep it in the locker room" code.
  8. How unfortunate. I've never understood the Twins fans who defend the manager more vehemently than they defend the players, especially considering the successful guys we've seen come through here. Let's give Gardenhire some credit for managing during the good years but keep him around and we will be seeing attendance in the single thousands a year from now. Folks who care more deeply about Ron Gardenhire than they care about the team itself should ask themselves if the inevitable losing season next year would leave a permanent stain on his chances to ever manage in any other organization. One bad year is an aberration, two bad years might be excused. Check out the story today in the Pioneer Press about Mauer getting "irritable" whenever Gardenhire comes to talk to him. Link . This franchise is overdue to decide if they want to rebuild around Mauer and their top prospects and new leadership in the clubhouse, or if they want to maintain their job welfare program for Gardenhire and his good-ol'-boy network while guys like Gibson and Hicks wither on the vine. So yeah, I have an opinion about this. It's got to be someone other than Gardenhire and someone not currently on the coaching staff.
  9. Do you believe or have evidence the overall organization is getting stronger?
  10. Well said. I feel the national media's love affair with Mattingly and all things New York cost Hrbek those Gold Gloves, and having said that, I would venture out to say that Meintkiewicz had a better glove even than Herbie.
  11. Love the photo You are recognizing that the Morneau trade is the news of the day.. this is a trade that will be compared against every lineup Gardenhire draws up the rest of the year, a trade that will be rightly held up against every transaction Terry Ryan makes heading into next season.
  12. Fair, but Winning can come about suddenly and turn arounds can be quick. (recent examples being Tampa, Pittsburgh, Washington, Baltimore). I think the Twins have expected to be competitive these past few seasons, if not strong contenders. They certainly didn't expect to be strong contenders heading into 2008 yet they were. Twins have some fantastic prospects almost ready. Do you have an idea about how seriously the Twins might be considering bringing in some new coaches who might guide the young guys along into the Major League level?
  13. Agreed - half the "prospects" on this team are pushing the wrong side of 30, Colabello included. It's a small small consolation, but without Morneau the Twins (you'd think) will now move Mauer to 1B semi-permanently and develop Pinto and Herrmann behind the plate. No reason for those two NOT to catch pretty much every game the rest of the way.
  14. Absolutely. But can you really put your faith in Ryan or Gardenhire to do the right thing anymore? That's what makes this so farcical. The attitude of "we've got this under control" is an insult and anything they do will draw derision until the team starts winning again.
  15. Already did when I ditched out of a season ticket group this year though I have gone to one game in 2013. I just think people are missing the forest for the trees. He WANTED to be a Twin and WANTED to extend with us even through all the losing. I'd love to see Justin get a ring and then come back to MN for a one year deal what about you? Killebrew and a ton of guys switch team late in their career but Morneau was not at the point where he was at the very end but still wanted to play.
  16. This is absolutely a PR hit. Morneau was one of the critical pieces of the Twins success in the last decade. This has been his only organization. He wanted to sign an extension with the Twins but Terry Ryan wasn't interested. Morneau knows he's at the end and willing to take a pay cut. Morneau and Mauer were best buds. Without Morneau, there likely would not have been the championships. "We believe in continuity and stability and loyalty," Ryan said. "The Pohlad family has always believed in that approach." That's what Ryan said in the Pioneer Press in July. Now, Ryan trades one of the greatest Twins ever for a minor league outfielder.
  17. Here's my take on a 2014 Opening Day lineup, something between what I realistically think it could be and what I wish it would be: Batting order: 8 Hicks 4 Dozier 5 Mauer DH Willingham 3 Morneau 7 Arcia 9 Parmelee 2 Herrmann 6 Florimon OF Clete Thomas IF Util Doumit I think Morneau still has the fire but is maybe out of tread. He'll be on 1-yr deals until he retires and maybe that comes in a couple years with Mauer moving to first when Sano is ready. Mauer needs to move from behind the plate asap but maybe catch once a week to make him happy. Plouffe I'm sure is a nice guy but needs to go far away from here. Pitching 1. Free Agent 2. Gibson 3. Diamond/Deduno 4. 5. Swarzak, Albers, Worley, etc closwr Perkins I'm convinced the Twins already have the arms to build a solid staff, they just need some coaching to guide them at the big league level. I don't envision Gardenhire and his boys managing here again next year. Detroit will still be the class of the AL Central but quick turnarounds can happen!
  18. Mr. Brooks, I liked your example of Hicks. He was highly regarded, highly hyped, but then fell on his face. There's no rule that says all rookies must struggle. Maybe the Brunansky-Hicks relationship never got off the ground, and maybe Hicks cant stand Bruno or Bruno can't get through to Hicks, and if that's true, then I guess the Twins need to decide who they have more invested in, Hicks or Brunansky. Same with Gibson and Rick Anderson. Same with other examples. You can express it more diplomatically than I and I will get a little heated, but I guess I don't feel scandalized when people speculate on bringing in new coaches to try turning the team around.
  19. Yes, Brunansky's job security should be called into question. But I would think most people are drumming their fingers waiting for Ryan to fire Gardenhire, or Pohlad to fire Ryan (or Gardenhire to fire Ryan) or whatever. Not sure about these fans who are so inured to mediocrity that they get offended -- after three consecutive 90-loss seasons -- when someone suggests firing a coach. The "blame the players" mentality fostered by the coaches, FO and Media is disturbing. Look at the vitriol aimed at Mauer, an MVP and three time batting champion not to mention fine defensively (if not the greatest handler of pitchers) -- there's your unintended secondary effect of the "our players are horrible" media campaign. True, are current guys are not the greatest, but they deserve better leadership. Dozier is a good story but the overall record is pretty cut and dried. As for Brunansky, we traded him in 1988, which was a bit of a shock, but I remember TK telling the media afterward that "we're not getting through to that guy, have you seen him? doesn't think he has a job to do anymore", that's essentially what TK said after Brunansky was traded. The Twins don't "owe" him a couple more years to teach our players his "system" nor do we need to keep Steinbach around either "just because he's Steinbach" -- to Rosterman's question I say Clean house.
  20. What do you suppose is Bruno's WAR as a hitting coach?
  21. Thanks for the "Benard" tweets -- hadn't seen those. I agree the Justin/Joe one takes the cake. There was also the Jacque Jones Torii Hunter bromance, the Matt Garza bromance with himself, and going back to the 90s, Marty Cordova and the tanning bed. But... how could you forget that Slowey and Dickey climbed Mt Kilimanjaro together in January 2012!!?
  22. For me, I just think Lohse's been gone so long and isn't the Radke type of guy to begin with, who you'd see making a long career with the one team who brought him up. I'd throw Garza in that group too - Garza wouldn't still be a Twin at this point.
  23. I will agree that Lohse doesn't impress me as being a great example of a cudgel to pound over Rick Anderson's head. The capable seasons you mentioned, plus he's just been gone a long time now (oh, and just another ex-Twin with a World Series ring - yawn - so there's good reason why people point to Lohse a lot. But to my mind "Andy's" record still does not look good, Liriano included.
