The Writing Seems To Be on the Wall for Alex Kirilloff
DJL44 replied to Eric Blonigen's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kirilloff is a bad defender at 1B. He can't hit lefties. Santana is a very good defender at 1B and beats the hell out of lefties. If there was going to be a platoon it would be Kirilloff/Santana. That was the plan out of spring training. Santana was brought in to be Kirilloff's caddy and gained more playing time because his defense is clearly better and Kirilloff could play LF when the OF was thinned out due to injuries and Wallner's poor play. Jose Miranda (another player coming off an injury plagued season) has beaten out Kirilloff for the 1B job, not Santana. Miranda has been a much better hitter (940 OPS vs RHP for Miranda, 663 for Kirilloff) and fielder (+2 RField vs -3) than Kirilloff. Larnach and Wallner are clearly superior options in LF since they also both field and hit better than Kirilloff. If Kirilloff wants to play for the Twins he needs to play better than Miranda, Larnach or Wallner. In the future he may also need to beat out Royce Lewis for the 1B job and that is quite unlikely to happen. Alex Kirilloff is buried on the depth chart. He is arguably the worst position player on the 40 man roster. The only reason I can think of to keep him is Kepler and Margot will both be gone and Keirsey is the only minor league outfielder who has a chance of being added to the 40 man roster. The Twins can option AK and keep him in the minors until injuries give him another opportunity. The problem with that scenario is that Kirilloff is more likely than not to be injured and unavailable when they need the depth. -
The Writing Seems To Be on the Wall for Alex Kirilloff

So the Twins should avoid signing better players in order to make their bad players feel more comfortable. Professional sports are competitive. Nobody has a guaranteed roster spot. Produce or you are gone. -

I think the option is their only hope of getting any trade return for Kirilloff. Nobody will want him if they have to put him on the 26 man roster. -

40 man roster spots are finite. If they decide they like Canterino, a pitcher who never pitches because he is chronically injured, instead of keeping MacLeod or Adams that is the decision they will need to make. I would rather have the pitcher who actually pitches in games over the one who only throws in rehab sessions. If they keep Canterino over MacLeod or Adams then their talent evaluators believe that neither pitcher has a future in MLB. If they decide they like the long-term potential of Severino (who is blocked in MLB) over Olivar (a catcher, a position where they have no depth) that is another decision. For that matter they will need to compare Severino to the near-term value of Holland or Keirsey who both outplayed him in AAA. I assume they shopped Severino at the trade deadline to see what they could get. It is telling if no other organization will offer anything good in return for your prospect. Thielbar shouldn't get more than a minor league deal. He's having a bad season and turning 38 isn't going to make it better. Okert should probably get traded for cash or an A-ball prospect. The Twins need to upgrade their LH relievers, not stick with this underperforming group for another season.

Probably true, but also why he's decent trade bait. Is Paddack a better bet than Mathews or Festa next season? If he's blocking players with more upside then he should be dealt. If he can return prospects with more long-term potential he should be dealt. I'll put it another way. If Paddack was on a different team, would you want the Twins to trade FOR him? Keep in mind he threw 88 innings with a 5 ERA and makes $7.5M.

I see several players on the 40 man who I am not sure are worth keeping (Canterino, Winder, Duarte, Dobnak, Severino, Kirilloff, Okert after his arbitration raise) and more who will be gone as free agents (DeSclafani, Richards, Margot, Farmer, Santana, Kepler, Thielbar). I count 16 pitchers and 14 position players as must-keeps. That leaves 10 spots to decide who is worth keeping in the long run.

Christian McLeod might have been promoted to see if he should be protected. Travis Adams is also possible, he has pitched better than Raya. Ricardo Olivar will be Rule 5 eligible again and someone might think he is worth adding as a backup catcher. I could see a team taking a flyer on Will Holland, he was having a great season before he got hurt.

The short answer (pun intended) is no. He is 5'5" which would make him the shortest player in MLB and his arm means he's stuck at 2B or LF positionally. That said, he controls the strike zone pretty well. It would be interesting to see how MLB pitchers go after him since they won't be afraid of his power. Tony Kemp is another short 2B/LF you could use as a comparable.

There is no way I would trust that on my home network. If something looks too good to be true it probably is.

Let's Get Specific About a Willi Castro Contract Extension
DJL44 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The alternative is trading all of those players earlier because you didn't buy out any free agent years. It makes your competitive window smaller and doesn't save you any money.- 46 replies

Let's Get Specific About a Willi Castro Contract Extension
DJL44 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins should absolutely give team-friendly extensions to their arbitration eligible players. If they want to maintain a $120M payroll they should absolutely trade the final seasons of those contracts for prospects. Arbitration buyout contracts are net assets, not liabilities. The weird contract is Correa. I don't understand why they gave Correa $36M if they want to run a $120M payroll.- 46 replies

Let's Get Specific About a Willi Castro Contract Extension
DJL44 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Utility players do not command a premium in free agency. Bogaerts and Marcus Semien got $25M a season. Bregman got $20M. Chris Taylor gets $15M. I think $12-$15M is top-end of the market for Willi Castro.- 46 replies

According to Kris Atteberry he's had a chronic injury since the end of last season. That means the Twins tendered a contract to an injured player and let him perform poorly for months.
