  1. Yes, by some miracle the coaching staff coaxed 4-2/3 scoreless innings out of Zebby Matthews. How long do you want them to press their luck?
  2. Sands was terrible on Sunday. In theory Sands was a decent choice. In practice he was bad.
  3. Austin Martin rates as one of the worst fielding CF used in the major leagues this season.
  4. Either Jax or Duran would have to get MORE than 6 outs to finish that game. There were 13 outs to get. We have already seen it blow up trying to get multiple innings out of Jax and Duran this September.
  5. If you don't have a large enough sample size for an individual pitcher then you assume the base rate (use the data from all pitchers). The base rate says pitchers get worse the 3rd time through the order.
  6. Those 3 pitchers usually get 9 outs. It is quite unlikely they can each go more than one inning and keep the game scoreless. In fact, Sands was terrible in his chance to keep the game close, so with the benefit of seeing what happened in the game he was an awful choice. Do you think Jax and Duran could get 13 outs and keep the Red Sox off the board? Are you prepared to do ask Jax and Duran to do that every game from here on out? What happens if either one gets injured because you're suddenly asking them to pitch multiple innings at the end of the season? Would you defend Rocco's decision to throw away an entire future season due to injury rehab in a desperate move to try to win this one game against the Red Sox?
  7. 5 wins is the maximum. That is a pretty big deal and I'm fine with trying someone else but let's not get delusional and pretend that Rocco mismanaged the clear World Series favorite into fighting for a wild card berth. Also, ask yourself this question. Could this front office correctly identify and hire a truly great manager? The Twins have never really had one in the history of the franchise. TK was good, but he's not Bochy.
  8. It is frowned upon (for good reason) to walk a guy to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. That's what Irvin did and it went poorly for him.
  9. This is perfect hindsight. Zebby Matthews has almost no track record of success in the majors. Irvin has managed to stay in the majors for six seasons. Every option Rocco had was a bad option - Leave in the struggling rookie - Go with one of the players cut by another team (Irvin, Tonkin) - Go with your own struggling reliever (Thielbar, Varland) - Go with someone who has already pitched earlier that day (Headrick, Blewett) - Go to your late inning pitcher in the 4th inning (Sands, Jax, Duran) which will force you to use one of your other crappy options in the late innings if the move is successful
  10. The manager does not have nearly as much impact on wins and losses as some people think. Based on the complaints here about Rocco I would conclude that those posters believe this is a 110 win team that Rocco mismanaged into being an 81+ win team. I don't think this is a 110 win team. I don't even think this is a 90 win team. Based on talent they're an 80-85 win team. Maybe a great manager could coax another 5 wins out of the team but a truly bad manager could have cost them at least 5 more losses.
  11. The manager's impact is "hope your reliever gets lucky". You can't make chicken salad out of this bullpen. Honestly, I'm surprised that Zebby pitched as well has he did.
  12. Keirsey would be behind Emmanuel Rodriguez on my depth chart. He's not a starting outfielder, he's minor league depth. Unfortunately, Buxton's injury history means you will need to use the minor league depth at some point in the season.
  13. There isn't anyone who is likely to take the job away from him in the minors. My guess is we'll see some combination of Emmanuel Rodriguez and Keirsey Jr play 60-100 games there next year anyway since Buxton can never play a full season.
  14. And no reason to burn options before it's necessary. Eeles doesn't have to be added to the 40-man until December of 2026.
  15. Matthews - the rookie who was struggling Sands - the pitcher who was terrible in that exact same game and was probably penciled in for the 7th inning. Varland - the young pitcher who has been bad all season Thielbar - the old pitcher who has been bad all season There's nothing Baldelli can't be second-guessed on. I think he was the one handed a **** sandwich with the current bullpen.
  16. So, who exactly is the magic pitcher the Twins had available who would have saved that game? Do you go to Jax or Duran in the 5th inning and hope they can pitch 2-3 innings each? Do you go with Sands - oops, he gave up 3 runs and recorded one out in that same game. Baldelli had the entire bullpen available, but it only has 2 good pitchers in it and that isn't enough to cover 5 innings.
  17. Is this a good team that Rocco ruined or a below average team that Rocco has kept together? If Rocco had lost the clubhouse the games versus the Guardians wouldn't have been close and they don't win that extra inning game against Boston. He has a rotation full of rookies and a bullpen full of castoffs from other teams.
  18. I wouldn't turn it over to Irvin, Blewett, Tonkin, Thielbar or Varland - whoops, that's everyone Rocco had available to choose from in the 5th inning.
  19. Offer him a minor league contract with a $1.5M salary if he plays in the majors.
  20. He's not young for a major leaguer. His needed role will be to come up to the Twins and play CF (instead of Austin Martin) when Buxton and Emmanuel Rodriguez are both injured. That should give him somewhere between 50-100 games next year with the Twins.
  21. Those "team records" Keirsey Jr set on offense are based on 4 seasons of Saints baseball. The record book goes back to 2021 when they entered AAA. This org doesn't draft "bat first" players. Their top 5 picks this year were SS, SS, 3B, LHP, C. Last year was Walker Jenkins (is anybody upset about that pick?!), Soto, Keaschall, Winokur. 2022 was Lee, Prielipp, Schobel, Morris and Ben Ross. The only "bat first" player on that list is Walker Jenkins and it would be dumb to pick someone else in that situation. If you want to complain about their minor league defensive development then I think there are a lot of valid criticisms. They keep way too many players at positions they are unlikely to master for way too long. Austin Martin shouldn't be working on his jumps in the outfield at age 25. They wasted a year of his development playing him at SS when everyone said he wasn't going to be a SS.
  22. Keirsey Jr is 28 next May. Why didn't the article list the name of the minor leaguers with similar stats? The list of major leaguers with similar stats is completely irrelevant. I looked them up. Kameron Misner, Andrew Velazquez, Samad Taylor, Dustin Harris Brewer Hicklen is one hit below those totals. Ryan Bliss is 6 hits too low. Pedro Leon is 1 SB short. Jordyn Adams is 2 SB short. That is DaShawn Keirsey's cohort, not the major leaguers.
  23. Is this service time related? Alcala came into the season with 4 years and 14 days of service time due to all the time he's spent on the MLB injured list. Keeping him in the minors more than 14 days should add another year of team control.
  24. If defense is a low priority then explain why their two big contracts are to Buxton and Correa.
