  1. The new coach is going to be judged by how well they work with Royce Lewis.
  2. Every year at least a dozen starters worse than Paddack end up with a spot on an opening day roster.
  3. Edouard Julien OBP in AAA this season was .395. K% was 31%. He doesn't have a problem with OBP, it was his batting average that dropped. He has had to start swinging at pitches he used to just take and wait for something better. He didn't swing at those pitches before because he didn't hit them very well. This is not easy stuff to fix, it takes a complete change in approach. It is very hard in today's MLB to string hits together. League batting average is .243. Your chance of stringing 3 consecutive hits together in an inning is 1.4%. Guys should feel better about hitting a double or a HR than a groundout. If you're going to hit the ball, you want to hit it hard. That is what advances runners. BTW - the Twins were #2 in baseball in doubles. They actually had the best offense in their division and were 10th in OPS+. They were 2nd to last in Total Zone Fielding runs and 25th in DRS. Firing the hitting coaches isn't going to improve their defense.
  4. The entire Marlins coaching staff is available. John Mabry has a decent reputation as a hitting coach.
  5. Looks like the Athletics don't have a broadcast partner either. The Diamondbacks, Rockies and Padres were already handled by MLB. That's 15 teams MLB controls. Astros own their RSN with the Rockets. Blue Jays owned by Rogers Communications. Braves are the last Diamond Sports team. Cubs own Marquee Sports Network. Dodgers co-owners of Spectrum SportsNet LA. Giants co-own NBC Sports Bay Area. Mariners own ROOT Sports Northwest. Mets have a deal with SNY. Nationals and Orioles co-own Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. Pirates co-own SportsNet Pittsburgh. Red Sox co-own New England Sports Network. White Sox have a deal with NBC Sports Chicago. Phillies have a deal with NBC Sports Philadelphia. Yankees own YES.
  6. I am hoping the solution is MLB Network for cable/satellite and streaming on MLB.tv.
  7. They'll probably sign a bunch of pitchers who weren't DFA'd 3 times but only because they pitched the whole season in AAA. Arbitration salaries aren't guaranteed in December. If they sign someone better they can cut him. They can also say "we offer $1M, take it or leave it" and then pick him back up off waivers in May for a higher price.
  8. Interesting developments there. Diamond Sports is giving all their rights back to MLB except for the Braves. MLB can figure out a broadcast solution for the Twins, Reds, Tigers, Royals, Angels, Marlins, Brewers, Cardinals, Guardians, Rangers and Rays as a group.
  9. It's a little the fault of the pitchers. They're really bad at holding runners.
  10. Maki got an All-Star caliber season out of Griffin Jax and turned Woods-Richardson into an effective 4th starter. I'd give him a C.
  11. I think I would keep Tonkin. They couldn't find anyone better for $1.5M last offseason.
  12. More important question. Are the city connect jerseys returning? I think they may have been the real cause of the epic collapse.
  13. Correa went on the injured list after the game on July 12, the team was 53-41 (+12) Correa came back on 9/14, the team was 78-69 (+9). They were 3 games below .500 (25-28) without Carlos Correa for 2 months. Correa had a .960 OPS in September when he returned but the team was a total mess and even he couldn't carry them across the finish line.
  14. Looks like Alcala spent enough time on optional assignment to gain the extra year of team control.
  15. WAR overrates relief pitchers. Pitching 1 inning is much easier to do than pitching 5-6 as a starter. You never have to face a batter twice and you can lean on your best pitch the entire time. Carlos Correa is the team MVP. They cratered when he was gone.
  16. I think they could get an equally effective reliever who makes half as much in return for Paddack. That frees up enough cash to bring back Carlos Santana.
  17. Shoeless Joe Jackson was clearly good enough to get elected to the Hall of Fame. He's out because he threw the World Series and was banned from baseball.
  18. Not good. He reacts way too late to the ball when it is hit which limits his overall range.
  19. Austin Martin grades out as the worst CF in all of MLB.
  20. Nice strawman you have there. Top 5 Twins pitchers using WAR were Ober 2.9 Jax 2.8 Lopez 2.5 Ryan 2.3 Woods Richardson 2.0 Jax was a reliever so I'm fine giving him an A but the other 4 starting pitchers shouldn't be more than one grade apart from each other. How does Woods-Richardson get the highest grade and Lopez the lowest? Ober B+ Lopez B Ryan B Woods Richardson B- Festa gets a D, Paddack a D- and Matthews gets an F.
  21. They should plan on Varland spending the beginning of next season in AAA. He was terrible in the bullpen in September. Couldn't locate his pitches. Get him in the AAA bullpen and make sure he's effective before promoting him.
  22. He has elite talent and was bad on both sides of the ball. The coaching staff absolutely needs to maximize his talent if this team is going to be successful.
  23. If you're expecting Buxton to play 130 games next year I guarantee you will be disappointed.
  24. The defense behind him is not good. FIP assumes league average defense.
  25. Shoeless Joe is still waiting.
