  1. My question is ... If he stays hot (relatively speaking), will a couple months of good play net a good offer and if so will they take that opportunity to trade him at the deadline or will they hold on to him because he is hot. My hope is the hot streak wins us some games and promotes a trade opportunity that is executed. I am going to be disappointed if they continue to ride this horse after the deadline.
  2. Who do you target as the primary piece coming back?
  3. They way I see it, they can be the best they can be this year which is not all that great or they can do what is necessary to get good and stay that way for a while. Larnach and Wallner might fall on their faces but the chances are good they equal the current production unless Kepler stays hot. History suggests his hot streak will be short lived but who knows. Letting Gray or Maeda go would obviously be a short-term sacrifice. However, the sacrifice seems small given the return pitching generally brings at the deadline. I don't see Gray or Maeda being the difference in a playoff run and getting there will be much more dependent upon our established players (Buxton . Correa, and Polanco) playing up to their potential instead of the abysmal display we have witnessed thus far. I would like to see them cash in one of them. It would be nice if they could find a RP. Once again, we have quite a few prospects with a shot at being major league players that need to go on the 40 man. Perhaps we can pick-up a Fulmer type or better in trade for a couple of these prospects. Maybe a little buying and a little selling.
  4. The financial benefit of making the playoffs might be driving the OF situation. They might be reluctant to bet on the youngsters because they want to cash in on the playoff money. It could also be that they believe they can get prospects for Kepler or Gallo at the deadline, so they are waiting it out. It could also be that they just want to play it out as long as possible and see if they can get the offense going. We are a different offensive team with Buxton and Correa playing as they have of late and hopefully we get a good version of Polanco going soon. It's going to be interesting to see what the pitching market looks like in 2-3 weeks. We might be able to really cash-in.
  5. I have similar thoughts although I think I would DFA Gallo first and hold Kepler until the deadline hoping he continues to play well. His wRC+ for the last 30 days is 150 with a 905 OPS. Yes, we know this is what he does but if he can do it for another 3 weeks, he might actually bring back a decent prospect because of the team option for next year. I think I actually prefer to keep Castro over Gordon. He is a better defender, especially in the infield and he is a good base stealer. Buxton is scorching. the ball right now. What the heck. He went from horrid to pounding the ball. I don't know what to expect but no way would I IL him now. I am right there with you on the OFers. Time to give Larnach and Wallner an extended look and how about trading MAT and giving Stevenson or Keirsey at shot or maybe Martin at the deadline. The opportunity for a meaningful addition is moving Gray or Maeda or both if the return is right. If Maeda pitches really well he might be a candidate for a qualifying offer. I am not sure what type of offers he will get at 35 years old but a 3 year deal does not seem out of the question if he pitches like he did yesterday going forward. I hope someone makes us an offer(s) we can't refuse.
  6. Great to see this many honorable mentions with an OPS around 900. I quit paying attention to Sabato so that was a nice surprise. I am really pulling for Keirsey and Camargo. We need some depth at those positions.
  7. Context is important here. I am not saying Gallo is great. I was responding to a post that rated him as the worst of all our off-season acquisitions. We gave up nothing in trade and it's a one year deal. It's hard for that type of deal to be terrible. I agree with you that OPS is sometimes suspect. I prefer wRC+. Gallo's rating there is 121. Jeffers and Kirilloff are 120 and Lewis is 132. Again, not trying to say he is great. I would be just fine with them cutting him tomorrow to bring up Wallner. I'm just saying no way was he the worst of all the off-season acquisitions.
  8. The only player on the team with 100ABs and a higher OPS than Gallo is Lewis. 99 ABs but close enough. He plays good D and 1st and corner OF. Plus, it's a one-year deal. How do you rank that last? I don't understand Vasquez 8th either. He is here to manage the pitching staff and play defense which he has done. Castro's OPS is 684 and his wRC+ is 93. It was 86 last year. What's the big surprise? I would rank him behind Stewart / Solano, Farmer and Lopez. I would rank him above Gallo because we have two more years of control for a pretty ideal bench player. BTW. Haniger was a much higher profile signing. He got 3/$43.5M and his OPS wRC+ is 40 points below Gallo.
  9. I see where you are coming from now. The guys with a real shot at making it are generally on the 40 man and shuttled between AAA which gives them a shot at making it. My thought was that the 40 man limitation makes the other guys available to teams that will give them a legit chance at a big league roster. It also forces teams to trade these assets like the Twins did with Steer last year. Maybe I am wrong but the current system seems like it forces redistribution of talent which is ultimately good for the players. This takes more thought than I have given it so I hold no real strong opinions on this one.
  10. If the odds were good for them, being blocked here would promote other teams trading for them. That could happen but you would have to conclude the entire league believes their odds of succeeding are low because they are still here. The CBA is not the problem. I am with you in spirit. They have given the ML team adequate opportunity. Switch it up. Find out if any of the guys tearing up AAA can do it here. DFA Gallo today and get Wallner up here and I would be fine with letting MAT go as well although he is not here for his bat. IL Buxton too. These changes would open up two 40 man roster spots. Hello Wallner and Williams.
  11. He has been really hot the last month where he is hitting .333 with an OPS of 1.086 and a wRC+ of 167. It's time to replace Mr. Gallo with Mr. Wallner.
  12. I have been saying Kenta was a trade chip since last off-season and there is a decent chance they move him. I am with you on Gray if the return is right but I don't think they will acknowledge this is not a contender and move him. There is the potential between Gray and Maeda to change our future. Sure, we can get a comp pick for Gray but I would much rather have a player that looks good at AA.
  13. Their career numbers are quite different than this year. Keirsey has stepped up. Will he keep it up? IDK but he has a higher ceiling IMO. Keirsey is the faster / more athletic OFer. He also has more power. He would be the better defensive replacement and late inning base running replacement. Let's hope this "break-out" is sustained.
  14. Ok. Fair enough but let's not forget the point. MANY pitchers struggle at first. Getting down on Varland or any other young pitcher because they are not dominant out of the gate ignores the history of many very good pitchers.
  15. Agree completely on the first 4. Getting value back and getting out of the Donaldson contract was a great trade. You can make the case they should not have signed Donaldson in the first place but that was a great trade.
  16. Cleveland has done a great job of getting major league ready or near ready talent in trades. They were not trading for 19 year old A ballers. For example, Rosario and Gimenez for Lindor. Clause for Kluber. Naylor and Quantrill for Clevinger, etc. They did the same thing in acquiring the pitchers you mentioned. I don’t see trading 2 months of Chin So Chin as a big price for 6 years of Trevor Bauer, especially given Cleveland won 68 games that year. Same thing with 2 months of Cliff Lee for Carlos Carrasco. Trades where you get 5-7 years of a Carrasco or Joe Ryan or Clause or Duran for 2 months of a player are a giant win for the team acquiring those prospects.
  17. Kluber / Carrasco / Bauer / Clevinger were all acquired as prospects. They rolled Kluber / Carrasco and Clevinger when they had a year left for Rosario / Gimenez / Quantrill / Allen and Naylor. Yes, Miami got Alcantara and Gallen in that trade for Uzuna. The A's got Bassit and Semien for Samardzija. Of course, the difference is that Cleveland never traded prospects for established pitching with the exception of Andrew Miller. The way Cleveland did it is much more sustainable that the way the current Twin's pitching staff was built. They have had a few low cost / high return acquisitions in Ryan / Duran / Thielbar / Odorizzi and Stewart.
  18. The Rays got nothing out of Cruz and we got 6 years of Joe Ryan. The Dbacks went nowhere with Escobar and we got 6 years of Duran. We got nothing out of Mahle and Lopez. Steer was the National League rookie of the month in May and CES is a top 5 bat in AAA. Of course, many of the other players we gave away could become very productive players and the examples go on and on. The vast majority of deadline acquisitions do not result in a post season success. Trading long-term assets for short-term assets is fanatical, certainly not logical. I heard the "wishful thinking" talk and insistence on the need to go for it so many times that I gathered the hard data in the form of acquisition method for top players for every 90 win team in the past 20 years. It's not that hard to determine how the best teams were built given all the tools we have available. The facts are very clear if you actually are willing to look at the actual construction of winning teams. The facts are that trading for prospects is overwhelming more important than trading for proven players, especially for teams outside the top 10 in revenue. Throwing good money after bad is never a good idea and this team presently is not worthy of investment for short-term gain.
  19. He has never been a guy that really goes after it. I don't want an OFer to crash into the wall but it's also possible to go after the ball aggressively without being reckless. He has never been a guy that plays hard and this play was a good example. He was at two-thirds speed long before that ball dropped. That said .... Wallner has looked really bad defensively. he just does not have good instincts or hands. That said .... If it were one or the other, I would keep Kepler for now, cut Gallo tomorrow and bring up Wallner or Larnach.
  20. I did not realize Rodriguez was eligible and I forgot about Martin because I had already added him to my list. Nobody is taking Salas but you still have a point. There are quite a few possibilities.
  21. I see four guys that need to be protected for sure. Camargo, Severino, Prato, Soularie. Maybe Kiersey too given the position he plays. They could protect 2-3 others. Take your choice. If you could pick up a BP arm for one of the others that would be great. I don't see any of the others bringing an impact bat.
  22. Who are you thinking they can't protect? There are 7 players with expiring contracts. Plus, Celestino, Sands, and Henriquez could come off and be not much of a loss. There just are not that many players that need to be added next year that I see this being a problem. I guess you could trade the three I mentioned but that would not bring back anything that would make a difference.
  23. Time to invest in the future rather than throw away future assets on a short term run for a very mediocre team. Get Wallner and Larnach up here and invest in the development of long-term assets. Give Winder and Balazovic a shot too.
