It's been consistently mediocre. The premise they don't want to improve it ( not your position) is as I said Naive. Gains in attendance have virtually no variable/incremental cost. It's an enormous boost to the bottom line.
-
I worked with a lot of organizations on building value and profitability and never ran into one who did not think it was extremely important. Even if you discount the value, winning creates a much more sustainable revenue stream, a better brand, etc. Every team wants to create brand loyalty like they have in STL.

If the odds were good for them, being blocked here would promote other teams trading for them. That could happen but you would have to conclude the entire league believes their odds of succeeding are low because they are still here. The CBA is not the problem. I am with you in spirit. They have given the ML team adequate opportunity. Switch it up. Find out if any of the guys tearing up AAA can do it here. DFA Gallo today and get Wallner up here and I would be fine with letting MAT go as well although he is not here for his bat. IL Buxton too. These changes would open up two 40 man roster spots. Hello Wallner and Williams.

Attendance has been down considerably, so your position makes absolutely no sense. This whole line of thought that the people who own or run the team don't care about winning is incredibly naive. A good product makes more money and perhaps more importantly increases the value of the team.
-
Isn't it a little more than "the roster". Are Correa, Buxton, and Polanco bad players or are they playing badly or hurt? How about Kirilloff? He has been bad for a month. (wRC+ of 69). Is he a bad roster choice?
-
1B - Most of us thought we would be just fine at 1B if Kirilloff was healthy. 2B – Polanco is a well above average ML hitter. Julien / Farmer are good back-up 3B – We are all excited at the possibility of Lewis. SS – Most posters here were almost hostile about the necessity of resigning Correa C – Jeffer’s is an average ML hitter and most of us were very pleased with signing Vasquez DH – Buxton's position with fans is pretty similar to Correa. many were irate at the thought of losing him. RF – Kepler has been an average MLB hitter for the most part. LF – We all doubted Gallo to various degrees but we do have Larnach and Wallner in the wings Bench – Our bench is better than most. It would be far more accurate to say the guys they depended on (Correa / Buxton / Polanco) have been bad. However, as a group we rigorously supported these players. Then, there is the Miranda meltdown. Sophomore slumps are pretty common but most of us were feeling pretty good about Miranda. So, who should they have replaced other than going with someone other than Gallo. Keep in mind the available OFers last off-season were very slim pickins. Should we have discarded Kirilloff? Not signed Correa? Signed a 3B when we had Miranda at 3B with Lewis waiting?
-
I doubt anyone so mentally fragile that changing their batting order position would impede their performance that badly could make it to the front of a major league lineup.
-
Clearly. Really? Have you been in the clubhouse. Have you observed his interaction with players? None of us have nearly enough information to offer an opinion and that's assuming expertise in leadership.
-
Gallo's wRC+ looks OK for the year but it is 68 for the last 6 weeks. If you can trade him great but move on. Kepler can go as well. Put Buxton on the IL.
-
They could make a statement by DFAing Gallo and bringing up Larnach or Wallner. Then, bring Kiersey up to AAA. Trade MAT in a month and bring up Kiersey. Not much to do in the IF. I think we want Royce at 3B until someone else makes more sense. Correa is not going anywhere. Polanco will be back soon and I think we want Kirilloff at 1B. I guess we could give Williams a shot and play Kirilloff in the OF. What do you do about Buxton? He has been brutal lately. His wRC+ in June is 47.
-
Francona is about as stoic as they come.
-
I have been saying Kenta was a trade chip since last off-season and there is a decent chance they move him. I am with you on Gray if the return is right but I don't think they will acknowledge this is not a contender and move him. There is the potential between Gray and Maeda to change our future. Sure, we can get a comp pick for Gray but I would much rather have a player that looks good at AA.

DaShawn Keirsey: Twins Most Underrated Prospect
Major League Ready replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Their career numbers are quite different than this year. Keirsey has stepped up. Will he keep it up? IDK but he has a higher ceiling IMO. Keirsey is the faster / more athletic OFer. He also has more power. He would be the better defensive replacement and late inning base running replacement. Let's hope this "break-out" is sustained. -
Larnach seems to handle velocity quite well. Opposing pitchers all seem to feed him a steady diet of vertical breaking balls. He will be good if he can learn to handle that sinker at the bottom of the zone. I assume the pitching machines they have now can simulate that pitch.

Ok. Fair enough but let's not forget the point. MANY pitchers struggle at first. Getting down on Varland or any other young pitcher because they are not dominant out of the gate ignores the history of many very good pitchers.

I guess I did not understand what you meant by "I'm not at all certain that Wallner is a better option than either Max or Gallo. I wouldn't mind looking to the trade market for a different upgrade if possible." I have no problem with them DFAing Gallo or Kepler but I would do so to give Larnach and Wallner playing time to determine if there is a need to fill those spots by going outside the organization in the off-season. Give Larnach and Wallner 3 months of playing time this year and determine if they need to look at free agents in the off-season.

If you think they are going to DFA Gallo or Kepler and then trade for an OFer, I have bad news for you. Making such a trade with two MLB ready OFers in AAA and a team that is FAR away from being a player away from contention would be grounds for termination. The real problems in June have Been Buxton / Gallo / Castro, and Kirilloff. The four of them have a wRC+ of 55-60. Kepler's is 102 for June. Taylor and Farmer are 78 & 79. The only three significantly above average are Solano, Lewis, and Julien, in that order.

Agree completely on the first 4. Getting value back and getting out of the Donaldson contract was a great trade. You can make the case they should not have signed Donaldson in the first place but that was a great trade.

Cleveland has done a great job of getting major league ready or near ready talent in trades. They were not trading for 19 year old A ballers. For example, Rosario and Gimenez for Lindor. Clause for Kluber. Naylor and Quantrill for Clevinger, etc. They did the same thing in acquiring the pitchers you mentioned. I don’t see trading 2 months of Chin So Chin as a big price for 6 years of Trevor Bauer, especially given Cleveland won 68 games that year. Same thing with 2 months of Cliff Lee for Carlos Carrasco. Trades where you get 5-7 years of a Carrasco or Joe Ryan or Clause or Duran for 2 months of a player are a giant win for the team acquiring those prospects.

Kluber / Carrasco / Bauer / Clevinger were all acquired as prospects. They rolled Kluber / Carrasco and Clevinger when they had a year left for Rosario / Gimenez / Quantrill / Allen and Naylor. Yes, Miami got Alcantara and Gallen in that trade for Uzuna. The A's got Bassit and Semien for Samardzija. Of course, the difference is that Cleveland never traded prospects for established pitching with the exception of Andrew Miller. The way Cleveland did it is much more sustainable that the way the current Twin's pitching staff was built. They have had a few low cost / high return acquisitions in Ryan / Duran / Thielbar / Odorizzi and Stewart.

The Rays got nothing out of Cruz and we got 6 years of Joe Ryan. The Dbacks went nowhere with Escobar and we got 6 years of Duran. We got nothing out of Mahle and Lopez. Steer was the National League rookie of the month in May and CES is a top 5 bat in AAA. Of course, many of the other players we gave away could become very productive players and the examples go on and on. The vast majority of deadline acquisitions do not result in a post season success. Trading long-term assets for short-term assets is fanatical, certainly not logical. I heard the "wishful thinking" talk and insistence on the need to go for it so many times that I gathered the hard data in the form of acquisition method for top players for every 90 win team in the past 20 years. It's not that hard to determine how the best teams were built given all the tools we have available. The facts are very clear if you actually are willing to look at the actual construction of winning teams. The facts are that trading for prospects is overwhelming more important than trading for proven players, especially for teams outside the top 10 in revenue. Throwing good money after bad is never a good idea and this team presently is not worthy of investment for short-term gain.

Max Kepler isn't good at anything anymore
Major League Ready replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
He has never been a guy that really goes after it. I don't want an OFer to crash into the wall but it's also possible to go after the ball aggressively without being reckless. He has never been a guy that plays hard and this play was a good example. He was at two-thirds speed long before that ball dropped. That said .... Wallner has looked really bad defensively. he just does not have good instincts or hands. That said .... If it were one or the other, I would keep Kepler for now, cut Gallo tomorrow and bring up Wallner or Larnach. -
I did not realize Rodriguez was eligible and I forgot about Martin because I had already added him to my list. Nobody is taking Salas but you still have a point. There are quite a few possibilities.
