Twins 0, Blue Jays 15: Zebby Shelled
mikelink45 replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is a game worth forgetting. Zebby stunk, Tonkin stunk, Blewett was okay, Thielbar was okay and Farmer only gave up 3 in two innings. Meanwhile on the offensive side we had 4 hits. One extra base hit. This was one big smack down. What is next? We are 3 - 9 for the last dozen games. Is this what we expect against teams over 500? If so forget the playoffs, I believe those teams will have winning records.- 31 replies

I am hoping the Twins let Keirsey go to a team that will play him.

This was great. I really was a fan of Bernie. In Milwaukee Gene Conley played as a pitcher for the braves and also played for the Celtics. Actually he played for four teams, but I remember him with the braves. 11 years in the majors and 7 in the NBA.

SNL introduced Debbie in a sketch in 2004 according to Buzzfeed. I have a hard time being down when the number one guy pitches a great game and gets into the 8th - why pull him then? This give the BP almost a night off. Why use two RP? Nice to see Miranda with a key hit. Should Lewis have gotten a rehab? Will Lee make a difference? Can Zebby be what we hoped Berrios would become (for us)?

McCusker has become what they hoped Sabato would be. I think he will be coming to Mpls soon. Adams is a good story and might be moving behind Morris for the next and line slot. Another good report.

Resetting Expectations for Carlos Correa
mikelink45 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am ready for another barrage of thumbs down, but I will say again - the Twins have suffered a lot of injuries, but they have also chosen to sign or acquire injured players - The quote from the article indicates that there were injury concerns that were apparent to other teams and I do not buy the statement that the Mets were simply looking for a bargain. If $30 million a year is a bargain I am at a loss. But we have extended Buxton despite his injury record. We have acquired Mahle, kept Pineda, and acquired Paddock despite knowing they would be out at least a year and I don't know what to say about DeSclafani who according to salaries listed on Twins salaries is the third highest. Vasquez, Kepler and Margot are tied for fourth on the salary list if you are interested. There are so many injuries in baseball that our list is not the worst - think of what has happened to first place Baltimore's and Dodgers rotations. Or the Braves losing Strider, Acuna and Riley. The Orioles, Reds, and White Sox have 13 on the injured list right now. The Red Sox and Yankees have 11. The Astros have 7 SP injured. The Mets have 14 on their list. In our division Cleveland has nine with Bieber and Karinchak being key pieces of their pitching staff. KC has 10 players out with the new addition of Vinnie Pasquantino. The Twins have 11 and we know the stars that are on the list. There are more teams that could be on this list, but I will stop there. Do not tell me we are cursed, that we suffer more than other teams. Just play the game and start winning against teams with records above 500! -
In an era where BP are now carrying the team through 4 innings a game I suggest that pushing starters to seven innings like they used to do is a smarter strategy. If they give up a walk or hit in the 6th they are gone - ridiculous. They are not going to throw no-hitters. Let's truly examine this - Jackson, Duarte, Okert, Blewett, Staumont, Henley, Ortega, Sanchez, Cotton, Minaya, Strotman, Vallimont, Law, Chalmers and Floro (both traded and released) all released and no MLB teams grabbing them. Then there are the trades for Lopez and Richards. Now we count on Boushley who we released July 14. And we count on injury prone starters - DeSclacfani, Paddock. Mahle or we think we can resurrect pitchers like Archer, Bundy, Happ, Gant, Shoemaker... I went through transactions for 2024 - April 2021. I left out some names I have no memory of. Of course other teams whiff too, but I do not like being a homer and thinking our guys are always better or smarter. They are trying. They have their own philosophy and follow it. The BP is a place where I fail to see the smarts. We lost out on players like Gil and Cano - and all teams do. So lets just say the FO has done some really good things to balance with the dumb decisions. Because I could do this with position players too.

Former Twins Lefty and Closer Hits Waivers
mikelink45 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You answered your own question. If they thought they could get rid of the huge contract for next year they might, but that is the albatross hanging around Taylor's neck. +She's the albatross She is here to destroy you Devils that you know Raise worse hell than a stranger She's the death you chose You're in terrible danger" The Albatross Song by Taylor Swift -
I know I have posted some less than glorious comments, but we have Correa with a down year despite playing 135 games last year - 1.4 WAR for our best and highest paid player is not good. 75 games this year - good stats, but if that is it for the year it is not enough. Second best player - Buxton - last year 85 games, this year 90 and 82 if them in the OF. Does he come back and how well? Stewart has an injury history 28 games last year - 16 this year. Royce Lewis has an injury history going back to the minors. 58 games last year 54 this year. Terrible to lose four key guys = should the FO have good replacements for each position? No one is going to be as good, but they need to be acceptable and we have not reinforced the perceived needs. The rotation was really hurt by Ryan's loss although I do not see him the same as the other four. Paddack going down was not a surprise, Topa not pitching is not a surprise. Even Kiriloff no longer in the mix is not a surprise. But what was done? What did we expect?

Ryan is not coming back. The other three keep teasing us, but at the end of August how much faith do we have in them returning and even more - performing?

Love to see Adams pitch longer in the game. He is doing great and stretching him out would be great for the future. Okay - serious question - what does Keirsey have to do to get called up?

What is our record versus good teams now? Buxton and Correa and Lee out - Lewis ice cold. Wallner is doing his share, Larnach too, but we need more than that. Now we have had Alcala, Ober, Duran blow up - we cannot afford this to continue.

We'll take them now, but if they do it to him in the playoffs we're going to have a real question on our hands and I would hope somebody on our team can study what he does. Patterns and body science and figure out what it is that might give away his pitches

This is another of those - let's get a reaction column. Otherwise the answer is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Sam Mele, Gene Mauch, Tom Kelly, Paul Molitor (yes - he did a good job), Ron Gardenhire, Billy Martin, Frank Quilici. Give them the talent on this team and they win. And I am ignoring the Washington Senator managers. I am not against Rocco, but I am against recent bias and overstating current abilities.

I love the fast game - steals, hit and run, taking an extra base. As we struggle in this recent set of games against good teams we can see where a little pressure, a few extra bags might allow us to win a few more games. Guardians - 121 Royals - 108 Twins - 62 Could that be reflected in the standings????

Bring on the rookies and challenge them to get another inning in each start. What a let down. We continue to struggle against any team that is 500 or better and that is not the mark of a team that we can look to the playoffs and hope for any success. Thank goodness for wallner. And luckily we could get Richards in so he could throw another wild pitch. What in the world could they have seen in him that we would make a trade of more than a sack of balls to acquire him?
