Jhoan Duran's pitching effectiveness - a deep dive
LambchoP commented on Eric Blonigen's blog entry in Eric’s deep dive corner
Duran will be fine. I've seen him hit 102 a few times this year. Only things he needs to worry about is control. If he can locate his heater and splitter and not hang as many curves, then he'll be just fine. I think the further he gets from his injury his velo will tick up too- 3 comments

I think parting with any high level prospects for RP having career years would be another disaster aka Jorge Lopez. If we can get them healthy I think we have some great right handed weapons in Stewart, Topa, Canterino and Varland. If we do trade for a reliever it should be a high leverage lefty to replace Theilbar. I like Funderburk but don't think him or Okert are high leverage, late inning guys.

Rocco is infuriating. Resting two of your hottest hitters on the same day, not only playing, but STARTING guys out of position. Putting Jackson or Theilbar into a tie game in the late innings? Did we even want to win today? Also, not even trying to hold runners looked pathetic. That one on Jackson where they stole third....looked like Jackson completely forgot there was even a runner out there! Glad he's gone, but Theilbar needs to be next. There's better options available. Hope we get Stewart, Topa and Canterino back sometime...

Everyone keeps talking about getting Vlad Jr to play 1b for us, but Miranda is waaay cheaper and this year is putting up better numbers. I think now that he's healthy and producing, Miranda is our long term first baseman. With Lee playing so well I assume he's going to be pushing for an everyday second base job, which leaves Julien as a platoon hitter or trade candidate.

17 homers for Wallner. Dudes been hitting lately. If Kepler hits the IL I say give Wallner a shot to see if he can keep it going in the bigs. By the all-star break I think Lee will force the twins to call him up. Santana at first, Lee at second. Miranda dh'ing. Lewis and Correa on the left side, that's a solid infield!

Bullpen definitely needs some work. Glad they released Jackson but now Theilbar needs to be next. They could replace him pretty easily with Funderburk which is a decent short term solution. But high leverage, late game situations I wouldn't trust Okert or Funderburk because of their control issues. We need a solid high strikeouts lefty and another right handed. Especially if we're not getting Topa, Canterino or Stewart back anytime soon. Any one of those guys, along with Varland could really strengthen the BP, just need guys to get healthy. As for lefties, how's Aroldis Chapman's season going? He's on a selling team right?

Vladdy wouldn't be worth the money imo. He's putting up numbers that both Miranda and Santana can match at 1b for us. I'm guessing Miranda will be our starting first baseman next year. I think Kikuchi would be a great get. We have no lefty starters, and with Lopez and Ober struggling and Paddack looking like he might be cooked, Kikuchi could really boost our rotation which is our biggest need. We also could use some relief help. Kirby would be great and I think a leverage lefty would be a boon.

Royce Lewis In Changing History In Every Game He Plays
LambchoP replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nice to have Lewis, Correa and Buxton in their primes. Now if we can get some quality pitching we'll have a good shot at the playoffs:) -
I think twins should try and package AK with someone like Severino and another prospect to get some pitching. We need another starter and bullpen help. Kiriloff is redundant, we already have slow lefty corner outfielders in Wallner and Larnach. Plus Martin has looked good so far and we have Keirsey and E Rodriguez playing like they want a call up.
-
Twins definitely need to trim the fat off our bullpen. Both Theilbar and Jackson have no business being out there. Call up Funderburk to replace Theilbar at least temporarily. He's got good K stuff but too many walks. Not sure what's up with Topa or Canterino, both of whom would help our bullpen, I think we need some serious relief help at the deadline. Along with a solid starter with control. Sad to say, but right now Ryan is the only starter I'd trust in a playoff game. I think they should give Festa a spot start or two in Pablo or Paddacks place to give them some rest.

Severino has been hitting great lately. He's positionally blocked for us though. I think leading the minors in home runs last year and his recent hot streak, I think we could package him with someone like Kiriloff and another prospect for some pitching help that we really need.

I think by the trade deadline the twins need to trim the fat off this team if we're going to make a serious post season run. Try to find a trade and get whatever we can for Farmer, Margot, Theilbar. If nothing's there, then DFA. We've got plenty of outfielders to replace Margot.Martin has looked good. Castro is good enough out there. Larnach, Wallner, Kepler. Calling up Lee would be an easy replacement for Farmer, as long as they let him play everyday. Theilbar and Jackson have no business in our bullpen and I think we should look for some relief help at the deadline along with a good starting pitcher with control.

I think they should skip the next one or two Pablo starts and give Festa a shot. They also need to trim the fat on our bullpen. Get rid of Theilbar and Jackson. Funderburk could be a short term solution for Theilbar, but I think we should Definitely look for some SP and bullpen help at the deadline.

Carlos Santana the All-Star is Closer Than You Think
LambchoP replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Our best player is Royce Lewis, but he hasn't played enough this year. Our all-stars should be Jax, Ryan, and definitely Correa after the test he's been on. A month ago I would have said Jeffers but man he really fell off a cliff and has looked bad.- 33 replies

As the Weather Heats Up, So Have Saints Bats
LambchoP replied to Theodore Tollefson's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I also think Wallner has earned himself a call up. I don't care that Margot has gotten a few hits this last week. He's 0-19 in pitch hit situations. Time to move on from him. If Wallner continues to struggle, give Keirsey a shot, he could be a good spark plug. I think we should package some of our blocked infielders like Severino Helman or Kemp to get some starting pitching and bullpen help. Now that they're all hitting well we should be able to get someone decent in return. Maybe offer up Kiriloff as well, he's been passed up by larmach and Wallner looks like.- 8 replies

Maybe time to call up Varland again or Festa for a spot start or two in Pablo's place. Give him a little extra rest and see if that helps sort him out. Both Jackson and Theilbar are wasted roster spots. We could replace Theilbar with Funderburk but I think we need a high leverage lefty at the trade deadline. Maybe package Kiriloff and some of our blocked infielders like Severino and Helman for some starting pitching and bullpen help.

If I'm remembering right, the Twins don't have any top picks. Hopefully we can hit on some high upside pitching. Starting pitching especially looks like a weakness for this club.

I say absolutely not. This guy doesn't look like he's any better than what we already have in Wallner, Larnach, Kiriloff, Keirsey....makes no sense to trade for a player that is so redundant. Especially trading our best reliever in Jax, that would absolutely cripple our bullpen. Twins need starting pitching more than anything.
-
I think the Twins should at least try to get anything they can for Farmer, Margot, Vasquez and Theilbar. Look for a starter with control and maybe a reliever with another year or two. I'd also say Kiriloff should be available. He's redundant with Wallner and Larnach, both of whom are better hitters this year.

Twins need to dump Farmer any way they can. If there's a team out there desperate for a shortstop like the Dodgers, maybe they take him off our hands. That opens a spot for Wallner. I also think Theilbar needs to go ASAP. He's unplayable at this point and taking up a bullpen spot. Easy replacement would be Funderburk but I think they should look for a high leverage lefty at the deadline.

Tough Decision Time for the Twins
LambchoP replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I say Farmers time has come. We've got plenty of guys who can cover the infield. If we could find a team to take on him and his salary for minor leaguers, great. If not, DFA him or Margot and call up Wallner. Theilbar also needs to go. I doubt we find a trade partner for him so a DFA is likely. We've got a perfect replacement in Funderburk waiting, although I do think we should acquire a high leverage lefty at the deadline.- 77 replies

You never know for sure with prospects. It seems there is an alarming pattern with top twins picks and their injuries. Is it our medical staff, are we picking injury prone guys, what is it? Royce, Buxton, Kiriloff, Canterino, Prelipp, now this year Jenkins, ERod, Gonzalez....

Wallner is on a tear and seems to have hit his way to an earned promotion. Call him up and send down Margot if he's got options. Otherwise it'd have to be Martin, which I'd hate to see. Martins bat has looked a lot better over the last month or so.

The fact that Paddack is coming back from tommy John and has been struggling badly lately, I think now would be a good time for a 10 or 15 day IL stint. Have him skip a few starts to keep him fresh and limit his innings. Give Festa a few spot starts, although I think Varland would be more likely.

Twins bats looking good. Think it's finally time to trim the fat off this team and replace them with someone better. Farmer, Margot and Theilbar all need to go, plus they all have solid replacements ready to go. Lee or Julien for Farmer. Wallner for Margot. Funderburk or deadline acquisition for the cooked Theilbar.
