  1. Even with his poorer than usual numbers this season they weren't that bad. He still produced clutch moments (go ahead double at NYY, walk off homer v Brewers for example). And his defense has been excellent. Besides, you don't sign players like Correa to get to the play offs. One player, no matter how good, can get you to the play offs on their own. Ohtani is two elite players in one and the Angels were still rubbish. You sign the likes of Correa to win IN the play offs. Carlos Correa loves the play offs. He thrives in that high pressure, high stakes environment. And it is rubbing off on the team around him. Of course Correa won't be happy with his numbers in the regular season. But he's not going to dwell on it. It's like a switch has been turned on in his brain now we're in the play offs. I listened to a bit of Baker's press conference earlier. He said we're not playing Carlos Correa, we're playing the Twins. I'm sorry buddy, but right now, Carlos Correa IS the Twins. He has driven his mentality, his hunger, his drive into the rest of the roster. Royce Lewis is hitting at MVP level, Lopez and Gray are pitching at Cy Young level. Duran closed out two close games in his first play off series. Kepler is a hitter re-born. People have been saying that the Giants and Mets have dodged a bullet. Nonsense. Correa has made us genuine World Series contenders.
  2. When Duran has command of his curveball he's unhittable. His issues in the regular season came from him not being able to throw it for a strike or get the hitter to chase it so he threw the fastball too often. He had the Toronto hitters completely befuddled with it over 2 innings. I think he struck one of them out with 3 straight curveball's in game one. That pitch is just pure filth and completely unfair when a hitter is expecting a fastball at 103! His ERA could be less than 2 next year. Probably should.
  3. As the Phillies showed last year, if you can pick up momentum at the right time it can carry you far. I reckon the Astros would have wanted the Blue Jays to win. Twins have been really hot since the start of September. We're a serious threat and we'll give Houston a hell of a series at the very least.
  4. Obviously you need to play well to advance in the play offs but you also could do with the Play Off Gods smiling down on you. For the first time in 19 years they did on the Twins. There are probably 7 or 8 key moments that could have derailed us if they hadn't gone our way: In game 1 the massive plays by Correa and Taylor which kept runs off the board but yesterday everything seemed to go our way: Schneider inexplicably taking Berrios out after 3+ innings, Guerrero getting picked off with Bichette at the plate with the tying run at 2nd to end the innings, Chapman's line drive which went foul by inches, if it went fair it would have cleared the bases and then GIDP on the very next pitch, ending the inning. And then probably came the biggest break of the lot: Correa seemingly getting away unscathed after getting hit on the hand by a 99mph fastball. How that didn't break any bone in his hand and ending his participation this year God only knows. To not have Correa available going forward would be devastating for our chances. We're more than capable of beating Houston. If we can get back to Target Field with the series tied 1-1 or better we'll be in good shape. It will be tough but Correa's experience of playing in Houston and play offs will be vital. And Vasquez for that matter.
  5. The HP umpire was all over the place last night. Called pitches both below and above the zone strikes at different times.
  6. The streak is over! And now interestingly the Blue Jays have lost 7 straight play off games - hopefully we make it 8! Defense was incredible apart from the 1st play of the game. Taylor's catch at the wall was the most important play but goodness me that play from Correa was sensational. I'm not sure anyone else in MLB would have made that play. The awareness, agility and arm strength he displayed was incredible. I'm in awe at how he picked that ball up barehanded and managed a perfect throw to Jeffers. Say what you like about his disappointing year with the bat but his defense hasn't suffered at all. There's almost a swagger about Lewis now. His confidence is sky high and we are seeing exactly why Twins made him a number 1 draft pick. Lopez completely unfazed about taking the ball in game 1 - really good from him. Hopefully Sonny follows suit.
  7. I've no idea which way this series is going to go. Teams are evenly matched with their pitching, Twins hitters strike out more but are more likely to hit HR's. Really, really tough to call. For me Correa is the key. He loves the play offs. If he's pain free or close to it which he says he is he could carry the Twins through into the next round. I think being able to sit him for the last 2 weeks of the regular season could be huge.
  8. While I understand why some people wouldn't have liked seeing Luplow pitch in a game where the score was tied, I totally understood that call by Rocco. We couldn't afford a 15-16 inning marathon game. Just needed to get the game done and get on the plane back to Minneapolis. Cannot wait for the start of the WC series. Games start at 9.38pm UK time so will be able to watch them.
  9. Twins are playing good baseball right now. An excellent series win. Now Correa can rest up, no risks with Lewis either please. And a short leash for Gray, Lopez, Maeda and Ryan please for their remaining regular season starts. Twins have been actually very good since the ASB. With the exception of being swept by KC, I can't remember any time we've been swept since then. Oh I suppose the two game set against Milwaukee as well. But can't think of any others.
  10. Sport can be so predictable sometimes. Correa crushed the hardest hit HR in his career - that would have felt really good! Side note: Very amusing to see what's happened to the two highest spending teams in recent years - the Mets and Padres. Padres will probably bounce back next year but I bet Correa is quite happy not to be on the Mets now who have pretty much torn everything down.
  11. True, but we need to make up 5.5 games on them. We'd probably need to go 17-6 to give ourselves a chance. Not out of the question but too much of an ask IMO.
  12. Given the Astros have two series v KC and one v Oakland still to play, I suspect the no.2 seed will be out of our reach. But even so, plenty of incentives for finishing the regular season strongly. Always good to go into the play offs in good form.
  13. Just thinking, it was so nice for the Twins and Guardians to celebrate the impending start of the NFL season by playing their own NFL match. Twins win by two touchdowns!
  14. TBH I'm fine with it. The game as a contest was long done. It's unfortunate for the fans to see such a one sided contest but that is sport for you. I must admit I had to laugh at Rocco bringing Willi Castro on to pitch in the 9th. Talk about rubbing salt into the wound!
  15. Win one of the next two and the job's all but done. Hard to see Cleveland making up 6 games when we have the A's, Rockies, Angels, White Sox and Mets to play. Hopefully Correa will rub a large amount of salt into the Mets very large wound when they come to Target Field. Hard not to be very excited about Royce Lewis. Ever since he got called up to the Twins for the first time, he's hit Major League pitching. For someone who is technically still a rookie to thrive in the big situations as much as he has is incredible.
  16. TBH the title of this could be "Rocco Baldelli beats the Twins, 5-2" because he pretty much single handedly handed this game to Cleveland with some of the most inept game management I've ever seen. Sonny Gray should have pitched the 8th inning but I could at least see why he went to the bullpen. But Jax shouldn't have been taken out for Thielbar - Kwan hits righties and lefties pretty much equally well. But Thielbar managed to limit the damage to one run and OK, we're still in front. The 9th inning is the only reason why Baldelli doesn't get ALL the blame - Duran deserves some with a simply wretched wild pitch with 2 strikes on the batter with 2 out. I think Naylor reaches even if the swinging strike had been spotted so the run would have scored anyway. And so to extras. Pagan comes in and does a solid job getting 2 outs without the ghost runner scoring. Naturally Ramirez is walked with first base open - no issue with that, obvious move. But what happened next had me shaking my head in disbelief. Not learning his lesson from the 8th inning, Baldelli is determined to have a lefty v lefty matchup. So much so he calls for Funderburk, a lefty who has only thrown a handful of pitches at MLB level. What happened next was inevitable. You cannot call for such an inexperienced rookie for a situation like that in any situation. You've got to trust your veteran to get the job done, even if it is Pagan. Pagan was actually in a nice groove, his fastball had good life on it. Trust him to do the job. Very unfair to expect Funderburk to do the job in that situation. This is Rocco's biggest flaw - trying so desperately hard to get, statistically, the ideal match up. He was so blinded by that today it cost us the game and gives Cleveland a huge boost. Let's just hope the 5 game lead doesn't get eroded over the next month.
  17. I would love the Twins to aggressively pursue an extension with Lewis, similar to what the Rays have done with Franco or the Braves with their young stars. How open Lewis would be to it is another question, given he's a Boras client. But no harm in trying.
  18. I really hope Lewis has a lot more luck staying on the field going forwards because he's got all the tools to be an outside bet for MVP if he stays healthy for an entire season. Exciting thing is the Twins have a roster that is only going to get stronger over the next few years. Lewis, Julien and Wallner are all in their rookie years. Then we've got Lee, Jenkins and Rodriguez in the top 100 prospects list. Lee in particular isn't far away from being ready for MLB. Then we've got established players like Correa, Lopez and Buxton tied down to long term deals. The rotation will be anchored by Lopez, Ryan and Ober for the foreseeable, possibly Paddack as well. Just need to replace Gray really as a number 2 starter, and add another starter for depth. Bullpen needs more depth. The FO must address this in the off season. Look at Baltimore. Their batting line up is no better than ours, arguably not as good and their rotation isn't as good as ours. But their bullpen is incredible - they win so many games for them. There is no reason why we can't dominate the AL Central for years to come. I don't see Cleveland or Chicago as serious threats next year - I'd say Detroit will be our closest challengers. But the FO can't get complacent like I feel they did at the trade deadline by not adding a reliever (Floro doesn't count as he replaced Lopez).
  19. That outing from Keuchel has given the Twins something to think about. That was vintage Keuchel, an outing that he produced so often during his Cy Young year. I hope he stays on the roster for rest of the year TBH, another player who has experience of winning in the play offs. His experience could be invaluable for someone like Ryan or Ober. I'd be tempted to move Maeda to the bullpen once Joe's back in preparation for the play offs as that's how he was used by the Dodgers or go with a 6 man rotation for the rest of the regular season to manage workload. It was good to see Buxton in good spirits while on the recovery trail. TBH there's no reason to rush him back. We need him back in CF, he's not suited to being a full time DH. Mentally he can't do it and that's fair enough. He's a CF in his mind and he just wants to be back out there. His bat has definitely suffered for not being out on the field. So I'm really hoping this stint on the IL results in him getting back out on the field, at least on a part time basis.
  20. Good to see Lopez get his ERA back under 4 again. It was up at 4.50 or so before his run of quality starts so he's certainly figured some things out and it's shown in the results. Jeffers has been on a proper hot streak lately. If he can carry on hitting like this he can be considered one of the best offensive catchers in the league.
  21. Guardians gave up 3 runs in the 9th to turn a W into a L. Twins scored 3 in the 9th to turn a L into a W. Beautiful symmetry. 😁 Thought Keuchel was good, bit unlucky to give up 8 hits but at the same time a bit lucky to give up just 1 run! Keeping Kepler is looking a better and better decision with each game that we play at the moment. He's been really good since the AS break. I'm not taking anything for granted after last year but we really should win the division from here. No excuses, get it done Twins.
  22. A night that could end up being very significant in the er...."race" for the AL Central. We win, Guardians lose and will lose Ramirez and possibly Clase to suspension after that massive brawl. Ramirez could get a lengthy ban after decking Anderson.
  23. Given Duran has been inconsistent of late I would have liked another closer brought in. Not too fussed about not bringing in a RH bat - players like Correa and Buxton simply need to step up. But there were so many rental bullpen arms available I am disappointed we didn't get one in.
  24. Fantastic news. Most exciting draft signing since Buxton. No disrespect to Lewis or Brooks Lee who were great picks themselves but Jenkins would have gone way before 5 in any other draft year. The fact he goes straight to #21 in the top 100 prospect rankings says it all. It's going to be fun to be a Twins fan for the foreseeable future. In a few years time we're looking at a line up of: Lee 2B/SS/3B Correa 3B/SS AK 1B Jenkins RF Buxton CF (hopefully) Julien DH Lewis 2B/3B/SS ? LF Jeffers C
  25. Aaron Gleeman of the Athletic has tweeted that Twins are near to finalizing a contract with Jenkins.
