I love that our highest starter's ERA (not including Mahle and Maeda) is 4.11 and that is Lopez! And he should get that below 4 soon enough. After the debacles in recent seasons of Bundy, Archer, Happ, Shoemaker and going further back the likes of Nolasco and Worley it's great to see we have 5 SP's who produce quality starts far more often than not. Last year Cleveland's rotation was way ahead of ours but not now.

Carlos Correa is Coming On for Minnesota
UK Twin replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The quality his at bats are certainly improving. The stats are slowly but surely improving. It's also worth mentioning the elite defense he's providing. He's thrown out a lot of baserunners that most SS wouldn't. So even though he's not hitting at a level he and everyone else would like he is still contributing. I have no reason to doubt why he won't post similar batting stats from last season.- 49 replies

Twins win the season series against Houston, they win the season series against the Yankees. What next? Nice to see the Twins score 8 without hitting a home run as well. Jeffers is really hitting the cover off the ball right now - I would be having him catch more than Vasquez at the moment. Stewart did a great job coming in, mainly to prevent Duran from getting loose and potentially entering the game. Got a big 4 game series against Cleveland which we need him for.

He's always been strike out prone. As long as he can hit around .210-.220 and hit 30+ homers he'll have been well worth the punt. He's the sort of hitter who can change a game with one swing and it's well worth the strike outs when he properly connects with a swing.

He got the key hits but his 3 run HR required Correa and AK (who had a quietly good game) to get on base so he hardly did it on his own. His game tying single also required people getting on ahead of him. The team has been very inconsistent batting with RISP but they are getting chances in every game.

I wouldn't call it a bullpen collapse. 2 of the runners in the 7th were Gray's responsibility. And Stewart made one bad pitch and got punished by an elite hitter. It happens. Lopez and Duran put up zero's.

I would not have wanted to be in the firing line of the bullet that Jeffers sent into the left field seats. Goodness, that left the park in a hurry. Correa may not have got a hit but still had decent at bats - his walk started the 2 out rally which saw Lewis smack a 3 run homer. Umpire also rung him up on a pitch outside the strike zone as well so not getting the breaks either - not worried about him at all. All in all a great win. Altuve's GS would have been hard to come back from but that's exactly what happened. Lewis could be in with a shout of ROTY if he stays on the field (I think he's still eligible).

Personally, I think it should be Popkins who has questions to answer. I mean, what on earth is he coaching these hitters?- 77 replies

Blue Jays 3, Twins 0: Time to Do Something Else
UK Twin replied to Steven Trefz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What a real sloppy game from the Twins. From Julien's base running blunder in the bottom of the first, it was just poor from then on. Julien should have made a play that would have ended the top of the 2nd and kept it scoreless. And then Kirilloff decided he should risk going from 1st to 3rd on a shallow fly ball with 2 out - I mean, why? And then Castro made an error which cost us the third run. On the plus side, Kepler and Lewis being activated for tomorrow. Great news about Lewis.- 77 replies

Several reasons - the strain of playing the outfield, particularly CF, should not be underestimated. The amount of ground you have to cover in CF is huge, plus Buck isn't going to hold himself back - that isn't who he is. Correa had to tell him why he was going to be DH! If/when he returns to the outfield it will be once or twice a week, probably for the rest of this season. 3 or 4 times is simply unrealistic and too risky.

Willi Castro is enormous fun to watch. He makes things happen on the bases, he's versatile and plays his heart out when on the field. I wasn't sure about him when he made the roster but he's been crucial with all the injuries. Very encouraging to see Julien going oppo so much. Reminds me a lot of Mauer.

What a great job by Stewart pitching out of the mess Lopez created. Need Lopez and Jax to figure things out though. Nice to see the hitting help the pitching out for once.

Nygaard Mock Draft v. 1.0
UK Twin replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Twins struck gold when they drew the number 5 pick in the draft lottery. There are 5 genuine candidates who could go number 1 in any other year and the Twins, barring a shock selection, are going to get one of them, probably Clark or Langford. Would love Skenes but he likely won't be available at 5 and Crews definitely won't so no point thinking about him. -
Pagan has been fine this season when he starts a new inning. But the times when he comes in with runners on base, each time has been a complete disaster. Surely Lopez could have put out the fire and pitch into the 8th, then get Duran to take over after he'd thrown so many pitches. Rocco's got a lot right this year but that was horrific game management. Having said that, he can't be blamed for yet another failure to cash in on a bases loaded, no out situation. Sigh, another game that got away.

Game Thread: Twins (Gray) v Dodgers (May), 5/17 @ 2:10pm CT
UK Twin replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
Dustin May done after 1 inning. Wow - Dodgers in a fix now. -
It's great fun watching Buck play in CF but I really don't see the need right now. I'd rather he increase his aggression on the bases first. We've got the luxury of Taylor in CF so I want to see Buck regularly stealing bases before he gets back in CF.

Game Thread: Twins (Gray) v Dodgers (May), 5/17 @ 2:10pm CT
UK Twin replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
Even with an off day tomorrow, it's important that Sonny goes 6-7 innings here. Duran will be available and hopefully Lopez will as well. But Jax and Stewart both threw Monday and Tuesday so we haven't got a lot of options if Gray doesn't get through 6. But at least the Dodgers have the same problem so if we can do to May what we did to Kershaw that would be ideal. -
Nothing causes the fielding side more panic than a well executed bunt, especially in extra innings (hey, White Sox).

Have the Twins Found Value in Trading for Starters?
UK Twin replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Whether they are free agent signings or acquired via trade, there's always an element of risk when it comes to SP's. With FA you're giving long contracts and lots of dollars and with trades you're giving away top prospects. I'd much rather go down the route the Twins are going. Yankees are paying Rodon a fortune to sit on the IL and they're going to be stuck with him until he's 36. Yes Mahle hasn't worked out at all, but I liked the trade at the time. And the Paddack/Pagan/Rogers/Rooker trade hasn't really worked out for anyone right now. But Pagan has been an improvement this year and Paddack could still work out for us. The Gray trade has worked out just fine. We did have to give up Petty, but the way he's pitching right now makes it worthwhile if he stays healthy. The Ryan/Cruz trade is a huge steal for the Twins. He's still only 26, he's under team control until 2027 and his career ERA is 3.30. We traded 2 months of a 41 year old Nelson Cruz for him (I know there were 2 other players involved but they've done nothing in the majors of note). I loved Cruz but Ryan is pitching like an ace right now and will anchor the Twins rotation for years to come.- 25 replies

On another note, I noticed that "sticky-fingers" German finally got his comeuppance - 4 weeks too late. Interesting that Hoye was umpiring when he was ejected AND in the game against the Twins when he wasn't.

Bailey Ober - you just outdueled Clayton Kershaw in LA. Take. A. Bow. What a response to a really tough loss. I was honestly expecting LA to sweep this series so the fact we've won one and could easily have won the other game is really encouraging. Good to see Moran step up when we really needed him to. Still needs to work on his control, but he got 4 outs at the end of the day. The FO deserve quite a lot of credit for acquiring Farmer and Taylor. They have really exceeded my expectations. And Farmer has had to recover from taking a fastball to the face! I've got huge respect for him for carrying on as if nothing happened.

4-17 is .235. That's not woeful. It's not great either though. Gallo's hitting lead off because his OBP is pretty good. And it was to shake up the Twins lineup which has actually worked. Since Gallo has batted lead off with Kirilloff 2nd the Twins have scored 11, 16 and 8 runs in 3 games.

I agree but this is Manfred we're talking about. And I suspect the Umpire's Association will strongly oppose to an electronic strike zone. The ability to challenge calls could be the compromise.

If MLB aren't going to implement electronic strike zones then the very least they need to do is to introduce the ability to challenge ball and strike calling. It would take 10 seconds to check whether a pitch was a ball or a strike.
